I'm not sure this is a "OMG ALL MY FRIENDS ARE DEAD" kind of crying. Then it'd just mostly be complete shock and emotional break down, rather than just a touch of it. This is something not as severe as immediate death or injury...

Maybe a tall ruggedly handsome Alien prince came out of nowhere, swept Mikuru off her feet, proposed to her and carried her off in his UFO.

Haruhis reaction?

"NOOOOOOOOOOOO! TAKE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Or what if a certain childhood friend confessed to Kyon right in front of Haruhi ... she stews and fidgets for a few days and finally breaks: "I ... I'm the one who loves you, dammit! How dare you just ... just go away with someone who ... I love you! You have to choose me! If you don't, I'll ... I'll ... I don't ... know what to do ... anymore ..." *crying ensues*

That wouldn't be amusing. That would be dramatic and fan service to romance fans.

Having Haruhi see one of her brigade members be kidnapped right before her eyes and her first reaction be "NO! TAKE ME STARMAN!" is hilarious. It plays up Haruhi's desire to not only find bizarre and unnatural things in the world, but for her to interact with them.

To have one run right infront of her and bypass her completely for someone else is epic level schadenfreude.

Huh. I guess we laugh at different things. See, if I got to see a scene like I pictured, I'd be enjoying both the epic drama and romance, and enjoying a little Schadenfreude at a tsundere who's finally had to abort 'tsun'-mode because she's afraid she's going to lose the person who makes her go 'dere'. It's a bargain. ^^

See, I don't ussually find that funny. In fact, over the top confession scenes ussually come off as somewhat annoying to me.

Though with this much dere dere, Kyon's only appropriate response is an immediate lip lock and bear hug lasting 90 seconds minimum. Anything less Kyon's likely a closet homosexual.
