I think I finally understood the concept of the two timelines:

Spoiler for idea:

The Beta timeline was the original one, Sasaki called Kyon over while he was in the bath and the whole trouble begins. Somewhere during the Beta timeline in novel 10/11, Haruhi creates Yasumi to help Kyon and the sick Yuki because she noticed they are in trouble (apparently, even she herself gets attacked) and Yasumi makes that phonecall through the timelines. She calls Kyon in the past, when he was in the bath, so that the line was busy and Sasaki could not call Kyon! This created the Alpha timeline. She changed the future with that phonecall! Kyon does not go to meet Sasaki, because she didn't call him, because the line was busy with Yasumi.
And then, somehow she combines both timelines later on, after she introduced herself in timeline Alpha.

Am I right?

In order to stop Fujiwara from altering time, Haruhi subconsciously creates someone: another Haruhi Suzumiya who goes by the name Yasumi Watahashi. (Interesting side-note: like Haruhi, Yasumi uses katakana to read her given name. But unlike Haruhi, it is based from kanji.) This person splits the timelines into two and is able to integrate the two timelines. She's also able to shift between the two timelines, but isn't a slider. As to how, it's unknown. One thing is known though: she has displayed the power to create closed space and <celestials>.

I like to think of her as an Angel; unlike the Espers, who are humans recruited to serve Haruhi, Yasumi is tailor-made. One could even argue that she is a piece of Haruhi; a tiny piece of God, much like what Gandalf of Tolkien fame was. Say, does the spoilers explain if she can do anything useful in the long run after the book? Or could she only do what she was assigned to do, that is manipulating split timelines once?

Nice. The extra ず is a bit of a stretch, but it sounds like a plausible little literary device.

I would like to point out (probably to the chargin of all Haruhi hentai fans) that Yasumi is proof that Suzumiya does not physically require males to reproduce and may not be interested in sex at all.

Edit: I just summarized the Haruhi - Yasumi relation to my roommate. His response: "So... Haruhi is god and Yasumi is Jesus? Wow. WOW."

I wonder if that totally blows the minds of the IDTE. They seem to be after the ability to create something from nothing (or maybe not...just how to evolve past what they are now).

Even with Haruhi's power all Yuki could do was alter existing data (heavily...more so than one of her kind could do normally)...unless she managed to actually create or delete matter/energy/data in that December night.,,,just to be made to put it all back later.

I would expect that either "our" Mikuru and Fujiwara come from different possible future timelines (and can co-exist as long as nothing has yet happened that precludes Fujiwara's existence). Alternatively, Fujiwara may simply have been "erased" from Mikuru(Big)'s memory either through memory editing or timeline changes--the revelation that Kuyou is the mastermind behind Fujiwara's actions may imply that the Sky Canopy Domain's power is sufficient to sustain Fujiwara's existence even if he should have been erased by the timeline. Mikuru(Small) does not need to know of Fujiwara as her "brother", given that it is still plausible that he was not yet born when she was sent back in time--we don't know Mikuru(Big)'s actual age----she refused to tell Kyon her true subjective age when he asked her. She looks about 10 years older than Mikuru(Small), but for all we know she could be older and kept youthful through future technology or genetic engineering.

The "being Mikuru's younger brother" thing does however explain part of his animosity for Kyon--he likely is aware of Mikuru's feelings for Kyon and how they will go unfulfilled.

Anything known about Yasumi's personality yet? If she's 'another Haruhi Suzumiya', wouldn't that mean she also has the same personality as Haruhi? She seems to act differently in the pictures though.
