There's always the option of reading the manga? Nayuki absolutely OWNS in that adaptation. And Yuuichi just sees Ayu as a friend.

In the manga Naiyuki is like some weird shadow following him around everywhere! I didn't think he saw Ayu as a friend....the manga wasn't that good with the story telling.

Weird shadow?! Hello, Nayuki plays an equally important role in making friends with the other girls - and is always there to support Yuuichi in whatever he does.

We only got to see traces of that in the original anime, which is a shame - it really does make more sense for Nayuki to be the one to make friends with the girls, while Yuuichi would be the one to take action when needed. I would've enjoyed the original anime much more if we got to see more of this kind of teamwork, and saw the bond between Yuuichi and Nayuki really develop - even if it wasn't the romantic type.

I'd be OK if Yuuichi didn't end up with Nayuki as long as he correctly realizes that she's the most important girl in his life, and treats her like family. "Not seeing her as a romantic interest" does not equal "treating her like dirt", which is what we saw in the first anime series. Let's see if the second anime can fix this problem.

Maybe the new anime will make her more likable instead of some jealous girl. She needed more personality too...maybe I didn't give her the benifit of the doubt..hmmm

Nayuki was treated like family. Family tends to ignore sibs or other relatives if there is a potential love interest around. They are both 17 yo. Extremely "close" family attachments at this age can be considered "different" in a non-anime watching population.

Yuuichi was acting like a normal male in the anime trying to find a girlfriend only to be thwarted by Nayuki on the 1st day of class, leaving only Shiori and Ayu ( both not currently in the same school and therefore not caring about the living arrangement) as candidates. He did also state in the anime that he was going to get a bad rep for the living arrangement.

Ayu ,being the strongest one, withstood Nayuki and got the guy. Points should be given for Ayu's boldness in the previous anime version. Her kid version was also a force to be reckon with.

Yuuichi had different priorities because he was in "dating mode". Happens to just about everyone, esp when they reach their late teens. While Nayuki wanted to spend all the time with him she could, he wanted to party with non-family members and at the first ep he was on a girl hunt. (She was like a sister to him in the anime imo.) Hence, she got left out of alot of stuff with Yuuichi in the anime that she didn't when they were younger. This has nothing to do with "being treated like dirt" because imo he wasn't really being cruel. He had already moved on but she hadn't.

When Yuuichi was younger, he was a pint-sized player. He was playing with Nayuki and the other girls until Ayu managed to dominate his time. That wasn't right, but there was "sis" and then there was "girlfriend". "Girlfriend" won until she had that accident and then he went into grieving mode/shock and never recovered.

Nayuki giving him the snow bunny and attempting a confession at that time was stupid beyond belief imo. Imagine this. Your girlfriend died in your arms. Here comes Nayuki...."Yuuichi, I've been looking for you. I've always liked you. Here, have a snow bunny." Knocking that thing to the ground was the nicest thing to do at that time. Some people would have added a few expletives before that.

This is not meant to get any Nayuki fan upset. I don't want to be stabbed either.

I totally agree with your analysis.

It wasn't that Nayuki was being treated badly, he simply treated her as a cousin as opposed to a love-interest. They had a really good cousin relationship though; something they'll share the rest of their lives. It could have been more - with alternate decisions being made and so on. And it is likely that, in this new anime rendition, he may see her as something more. But, with 13 episodes, there's only so much meandering you can do (and they already did a lot). So, I never felt she got treated badly, but she was simply not the girl in his heart. She was still there for him as a friend and a cousin, and had a chance to finally let go of her unrequited love. That's sad for Nayuki, but not "cruel".

In spite of what some people around here may choose to believe, Nayuki was and is actually my favourite character in Kanon. That's why I don't like how those same people like to insist that "only Ayu fans can like that ending" and so on. You can have a favourite character, and still enjoy the ending of an anime even your favourite girl doesnt "win" - go figure! I'm sure I'll feel the same way about the new Kanon rendition. I'm not saying that everyone has to come to accept the good points of the last series, but I do think it'd be helpful if some could at least accept that seeing good points doesn't automatically make you "in league with the enemy." Otherwise, this discussion thread is only going to get worse and worse once the series finally starts airing this fall. This isn't a war; there's no sense rushing out with guns blazing.

Guys handle grief differently. They bottle it up, get away from the source of the grief and it takes a massive effort on another person's part to get them to talk about it imo.

Yuuichi was feeling powerless to do anything at that time and Nayuki did say some things to aggravate the situation, so the only thing he could do was sit on a tree stump and pray to Ayu for some help. Again, it's not considered being cruel. His wish and the power of Ayu did bring the aunt back to life.

Besides, calling Ayu a "childhood friend" may not be strong enough. He was blushing in her presence, spending lots of time with her, buying her taiyuki and the hairband and had a massive grief period to the point of amnesia and not wanting to come back to a city or have contact with relatives because of it all of which points to a huge emotional attachment to Ayu. That's why I use the term "girlfriend".

That's another reason why I root for Ayu. I don't believe that realistically a person that was scarred to that extent would recover unless Ayu was to physically recover. He was probably blaming himself all those years.

I liked all the girls and cried for Makoto too.
