Shimanami Tasogare

Kamatani Yuhki’s intriguingly titled "Shimanami Tasogare" is a rare manga in which the activities of vacated building renovators are depicted. The story, about people reshaping a community, is apparently modelled on the Onomichi Akiya Saisei Project set in that town with a dwindling population in Hiroshima Prefecture.

“…this story is about an average Japanese high school student coming to terms with being gay in a society that has no place for gayness.“, as Erica Friedman recently put it in her Okazu review of this manga about identity. He isn't the only queer character in the story either. LGBTQ Manga: Shimanami Tasogare, Volume 1 (しまなみ誰そ彼 1)

After the final issue of Shogakukan magazine Hibana came out, Shimanami Tasogare moved to, and will continue in, Shogakukan app. MangaOne. Two tankōbon have been released in print to date which are also available on various eBook platforms.

Kamatani uses visually appealing ways to present the story and themes which would all translate well into anime, imo. With all the talk about tasogare toki generated by Shinkai's gender swapping "Kimi no Na wa", perhaps this is the right time for "Shimanami Tasogare" as well.

No offense here but could you please made the OP thread be simple?
It's hard to know what manga you are introducing from that long essay.
Just short synopsys and image(option) that is enough.

Rachel “Matt” Thorn has expressed her interest in translating “Shimanami Tasogare” into English. Something I consider excellent news considering previous work. Thorn mentioned “Shimanami Twilight” during the ““Wandering Son” Retrospective Podcast” for Anime Feminist. A broadcast in which she also noted that the mangaka Kamatani Yuhki is non-binari.

Worth noting here that Thorn is the translator of “Hourou Musuko” as published in English by Fantagraphics but she was not involved in any of the localizations of Shimura’s “Aoi Hana”. Worth briefly mentioning also that VIZ media has an upcoming print re-release scheduled for “Sweet Blue Flowers”.

““Wandering Son” Retrospective Podcast” from Anime Feminist, broadcast September 3, 2017. Link. “Shimanami Tasogare” was mentioned towards the end, at approximately an hour and two minutes into the program. Hopefully a publisher can be found to facilitate a translation by Thorn of this manga as well.

... and a link for a 2012 Twitter post in which Kamatani-sensei self-idenifies.

The series has been included in the Wednesday release schedule on the mobile app “Manga-One” since Sept. 20. As of Sept. 27 three chapters have been made available. On the day, ranking 10 in the "aimed at adults" list (Just ahead of "After Hours").

Wednesday, release day. Oct. 4 edition. At the moment, it looks like "Shimanani Tasogare" made the transition to this mobile app based platform really well. In the category aimed at adult readers Kamatani-sensei's story jumped right to the top of the hill. Earlier this morning ranking number one, according to the chart on the Manga-one website, and number four in that same category on the app itself. Subject to rapid change in that very fluid situation, due to real time voting there and the near constant release of chapters from a diverse range of series. Would be great if this manga could sustain that level of support with each chapter re-released - after its own relocation to a new neighbourhood, so to speak. Ultimately to facilitate continuation to completion. Hopefully not entirely reliant on that new environment.

The Manga-one mobile app and its voting system are most likely not accessible to the majority of people coming to this forum and the Manga-one website doesn't give access to the manga itself from a PC, as far as I know.

The next tankōbon, Volume 3 is scheduled to come out on November 15, 2017.

Wednesday, release day. Oct. 18 edition. Crucial conversations resulting in life altering insights. Nothing short of that - delivered with this week’s “Shimanami Tasogare” instalments on Manga-one. (Ch. 5)

Nothing new in the sense that these are not new chapters. If you’ve read the early chapters, the first published volume, of this manga before or if you have read the available reviews, you’ll know at which moment we’ve now arrived in the re-run of the series.
Spoiler for Review excerpt, mentioning details from the story so far:

Kamatani-sensei does deliver something new in this story, I think. Something some people desperately need to read. Or, at least, Kamatani can be said to deliver a refreshing new take on moments like these even to those familiar with moments like these. The timing and delivery in the story itself are impactful. Role models, offering alternatives, by simply being there at the right moment, by telling their own life story and by living their own lives. Not necessarily chosen to be, or chosen to become, role models either. Not necessarily exemplary lives in every aspect, but “perfect” precisely because of that. “Perfect” exactly in their imperfections, perhaps. All told within a setting of renovation, repurposing old structures into something more livable.

Also fitting, this week’s one-off: “Secret Room”.

We’ve arrived at a point in the story -still quite early on, I hope- where it becomes clear that Kamatani tells a story which needs to be told and heard - in its original language and in translation too. A point in the story which shows why this is one of those stories which needs to be published in any language and on as many platforms as are available to publishers. Books are important and this is an important picture book. An important first volume, here concluded. Hereby redistributed a little. It will continue to exist and now just needs to reach a broader readership. First and foremost in self-discovery. Minds pried open, with a crowbar if necessary.

Volume 2, the thorough introduction of 「美空」, re-starting from next week, provided the re-run is allowed to continue…

As noted above, しまなみ誰そ彼 3 will also come into existence in the not too distant future, most likely, regardless. Hopefully not as the final volume in this series.

All School libraries nationwide should have this story on their shelves, at a minimum. Including this manga series in the curriculum for compulsory education would be even better.

Chapter seven in this week's rerun. Stifling expectations. Open conversations. Open ended conversations.

Last week, manga imprint J-POP announced their intention to publish an Italian translation of the series “Shimanami Tasogare”.

This good news was revealed at the 2017 Lucca Comics & Games convention and relayed via Okazu.

Some other interesting titles in that list of announcements as well. No release dates have been provided for the Italian translations.

The intense chapter 9 appeared on the mobile app. - Book 3 in stores - as of today.

Continuing in Eleven - I'm happy to report.

We're up to eleven in "After Hours" as well, on the app. that is. (Not on the amp.)

Already Thursday but not skipped this week. On the contrary. More than one on MangaOne.

Somewhat related - "My Brother's Husband" is getting a live action adaptation. Three part NHK mini series. Maybe someone will pick up Shimanami Tasogare for adaptation too. In the mean time we have the manga. Let me rephrase that: We'll always have the manga.
