That was a really good first episode. Good production values, an interesting story, some cool characters, and very nice action. Not too often we get an anime about street gangs set in the US.
I'm a bit surprised Ash managed to become a leader given the kind of past he seems to have. It seems like he was Dino's boytoy, and they even made porn videos with him. Not the kind of things that earn you a lot of respect on the streets. I guess that makes him all the more exceptional, unless the whole thing is being kept a secret, which I doubt because Marvin totally is the kind of guy who would leak that info.

Pretty good first episode. Took a bit to really get pulled into the story, but it works. Ash is a pretty likable character. He's got some likable personality traits and has clearly had to rise up after dealing with an unsavory backstory. I think Eiji might be the one to make or break it though. Ash is kind of too cool so if Eiji can't keep up in terms of an engaging personality the dynamic might not work.
But as a whole that was a good star. I'm interested in seeing where it goes.

I haven't read the manga, does the war in Irak not work? It's obviously a completely different kind of war so I imagine they'll have to heavily rework some scenes, but is there something particular that makes it so they'll have to throw that storyline under the bus?

I have no knowledge of the manga, so judging by the anime's first episode, I was thoroughly intrigued after the brief war scene in the beginning. I think what sold me was not having an ending song with credits, but continuing the action while the credits roll. It made for a more fluid episode with a bit more continuity. 22 minutes is actually 22 minutes of plot, not 19 minutes of plot and 3 mins for op and ed for most anime out there.

But without going too far, the original has more to do with the South and Central America. Naturally, the modern political climate is different there compare to the 70s. So they have alter some of the antagonists' motivations. |
