Jann didn't really affect me, I know he's supposed to comedic relief, but the 'gay is funny' trope has been cliche, especially in anime, for a long time now.
Anyway, I generally don't like filler, but this was a good one. I like how Welkin reacted to Irene's antic in the bathroom. Instead of getting flustered like I thought he would, he just casually went, "hmm, a woman's weapon, huh?" That made me laugh. Welkin knows what's up, at least more than what he's given credit for. Just saw this episode. While it wasn't bad, I would like to see less of Alicia making mountains out of molehills, when it appears that Welkin isn't as much of an embarrassment as she thinks he is. I reckon that one of Welkin's strengths is that he takes a lot of things in good stead, and to a point doesn't make an issue of Squad 7's idiosyncrasies, which is something that can have its place in workplaces, military or civilian.
Isara plus wrench equals win. I wonder if anyone could get a screenshot at point of impact. I seriously thought that Irene was going to take Isara's account of Welkin hook, line and sinker, until the point where she mentions the sibling (possibly bro-con) bias. Has Marina always been so taciturn? I didn't find Jann's portrayal to be much of an issue. After all, what's one more 'crazy' person to a squad that is already eccentric? If anything, I find Largo's vegetable fetish a bit more concerning. Jann's reaction to copping a cup to the head was briefly amusing. |

It would be hillarious if they did end up having Largo's Veggie Maniac potential activating during a later battle scene.
Witnessing a large, heavily muscled man screaming "AAAARGH! VEG-TA-BLES!" before blowing up a tank with a ridiculously designed anti-tank weapon would be fairly amusing after all. |

Well I didn't enjoy that in the slightest, I was actually starting to like this series too so that just doubled the disappointment for me. I didn't find any of the jokes funny and the lack of story really annoyed me, why can't they just get on with the show... Hopefully I can just keep watching the series and pretend that this episode didn't happen.
Criticism:
I don't know, the whole episode just felt 'off' to me. |

Can I join the ignoring Slayer club?
Anyways, it was an enjoyable episode, and episodes like these are reasons I'm watching the anime. It's pretty different from the game, but that's exactly what I was expecting, a fresh and different look at Valkyria Chronicles. Most of the gags and such were amusing, such as Jann and Marina's moments. I really hope that the side characters aren't limited to these filler-esque episodes, though... Then again, if they do something like this, maybe they'll dedicate a whole episode to the beach side chapter??? On an unrelated note, I don't like how often they're shoving the FaldioxAlicia pairing in front of our faces. Sure it builds up more drama for what happens later on, but I want to see the actual pairing come to light. =( Thankfully, the Woodland Snare chapter is coming up soon~ Oh, and a relationship between Isara and Faldio's lackey might be interesting. More Isara screentime is a thumbs up for me.

I don't know if Tyrone has played the game or not, but I can understand that the characters look weak from an anime only perspective. They probably really won't get many lines or attention throughout the anime, apart from episodes like these to be honest.

It just seems like such a waste to push him so much in the show when their's so many more interesting characters in the squad. Being a non-gamer I had a feeling their was some good solid personalities hiding behind those silent character designs just from the bits I heard mentioned by game players and that pretty much played out true for me this episode. I just wish they'd focus more on the 7th squad for now...Get those relationships and characters established THEN branch outwards. Right now it feels like their doing things ass backwards for some odd reason...

I'm still stuck with the idea that Shindou-san voices either tomboys or young men. Can't really wrap my head around the idea that she's doing a semi-flirt of a girl with... "tracts of land".

I don't know if it's because I had too high of expectations, because I'm in a bad mood right now, because I'm replaying the game now and so everything is fresh in my mind, or what, but this series is quickly becoming disappointing.
Is it just me or did the game feel a lot more mature? I am feeling like the story was dumbed way down to appeal to a broader audience. Some of the licenses are getting on my nerves, too. I don't like how Varrot was portrayed as someone who would talk your ears off, for example. From little things like that to the Faldio/Alicia thing, which is a huge digression, I'm just starting to feel this is a very mediocre anime. I don't know if I'd feel any differently if I hadn't played the game. Maybe I'd like it even less because at least having played the game I'm holding out hope to see an expanded depiction of something I loved from the game. Like last night I replayed the Forest Snare mission and I am eagerly awaiting the anime's portrayal of that.

I don't think you're the only one that's disappointed by the anime. The game had a good story and it definately doesn't need a love triangle with Faldio in it. I was always impressed with Welkin in the game, since as soon as the shooting started, he picked up a rifle and took the fight to the Imperials. That and the interest between Alicia and Welkin was pretty obvious from very early on. This? I don't know, it just doesn't work nearly as well.
