If it makes you feel better, Shochiku Films, the company that FUNimation licenses most of their Japanese live action movies from, holds the rights to the live action Higurashi movies:

So I think it's likely they'll get those eventually... maybe...

I know this sounds overboard, but you just made my day!
Thanks for the info!

Well it's really not that big a deal, it only shows that they have prior business relations with the company that holds the movies, but who knows if/when they'll actually get the films from them

Time now for lessons in marketing.

The original boxset cover (or variant thereof) for Japanese release always had a blatant disregard for actual context. While that's probably appreciated there, in North America, I could foresee many angry returns.

Funimation finally re-released the DVD's, and they kept Geneon's negative covers. A better touch, but it still didn't seem right. The absolute negatives made the covers hard to see, and the actual images clashed with the effect Funimation wanted. This view probably turned off other people who weren't (commanded) by their friends to buy it. The thing that seemed the most unprofessional was that awful bright red text blanketing the top of the cover.

Finally trying this yet a third time, this version seems right. It has the cute factor. It has the melancholy SCENERY (not background, there's a difference). It has the negative effect, which enhances the positive image. Finally, they add a quote that not only looks good on the cover, it precisely identifies the show to a newcomer.

The thing that I question is, if Funimation is consistently selling out of these things at $50-70 a set, why are the boxsets being re-(re?)-released at a price cut? Oh, and for those that think $40 is a good deal, heh...

@Dante of the Inferno-
Bootlegs made by some guys trying to make a cheap buck aren't cool.

Also, the actual Japanese release covers can be seen here:
http://www.oyashirosama.com/web/item/index.htm#dvd

And, FUNimation always re-releases boxsets at cheaper prices eventually, usually after a few months, maybe more in some cases.

Actually, I do not own any of the discs, as it is against my policy to own merchandise.

Since there aren't any dvd extras on the Funimation release and the above site's discs DO have the same on-disc art, there really isn't much of an incentive to pay double to TRIPLE that price, aside from pure principle.

Buying a bootleg is like spending money for a torrent on a disc, it's stupid...

Motivation to buy anime DVDs should be to support shows you like and the struggling creators and industry.

The non-buying attitude among certain factions of fandom is something that has really come to irritate me as of late, it just boggles my mind how the anime community has degenerated so far. [/rant]

Anyway,

I agree, if the money profits someone else, then it's wrong. However, as much as I'd love to empathize with you, there is no sane reason why you should spend (originally) $70 for a single season of any show that has only the most basic of features. Not everyone can afford spending upwards of $500 on anime discs, even at the cons for 5-7 series. From the reports direct out of Funimation, they can't even keep the boxset on the shelves (at THAT price point).

And, on a personal note, I support this franchise in many, MANY ways. I hope that you are not insinuating that I belong in the same category as the vapid leeches.

Well, I'm glad you support the franchise
And I wasn't targeting what I said directly at you, but rather to fandom as whole.
What you said here:

is what sent me on that small rant, because it can imply that you don't support it

I'm wondering somethingh, I own two higurashi DVD's and the artbox but not all of them and I saw that the box set was cheaper for me instead of buying them one at a time, but are the DVD's in the boxset the same size as the normal ones?

No, the boxset is a thinpack, so it's just 3 slimcases with two discs in each.

Spoiler for New box set cover:

I'm not a big Rena fan, but I'm completely in love with the new design of the box set! I wish I had waited so I could order that one instead... oh, well. Not much I can do at this point. xD (I agree with Dante of the Inferno... the bright red text on the original version was absolutely dreadful T_T)
Although I wish I could "swap mine out" (seriously, the new cover is the bomb! xD), I must congratulate FUNimation for finally getting the box art right~

...So there aren't any new features in the new boxset?

Why is the old boxset runtime 624 minutes, while the new one is 650 minutes then?

Because whoever calculated the runtime for this set added an extra minute to each episode's runtime (25 minutes instead of 24). Just an error in math pretty much.

There is nothing new in this set, the discs are the exact same ones as previous.
