This is a question for fansubbers:

There is a fansub of Binchou-tan where the file is in the .MKV extension. Where can I download a program to properly play files with the said extension?

installed the Mat pack only and it should work ^^
sems like my pack was out of date

thanks for the link i had the same problem and VLC couldnt play it either

Did you try VLC 0.8.4 ? It has great MKV support, more than 75% of the MKV files out there should play out of the box ?

Are you serious about this?! From my experience, when VLC manages to play a matroška file, you'll likely end up with unreadable subtitles - not only because it uses translucent font (which becomes invisible on certain backgrounds), but also because it supports no positioning at all, and if there are multiple titles on screen at the same time, they'll end up one over another.

Oh, and 75% out-of-the-box is not such an acchievement.

Yes, VLCs subtitles handling has a lot of room for improvement. The thing about using 'invisible fonts' is the first time i hear that, as VLC simply doesnt handle fonts at all. SSA/ASS subs are stripped to SRT in any case before they get displayed, so whatever you were experiencing in your case must have had another reason.

Who are you to validate that ? Do you have the faintest idea how many different audio and video compression formats can be put into MKV container ? For a self contained player, which doesnt use external codecs, 75% is a great achievement already.

Despite the replies, the basic question asked by the OP falls under the RTFM category.
(or what I'm trying to say: it seems the poster didn't put in any effort to find the answer himself,
because it would have been rather easy -- just look at the BILLION other threads about the same topic)
