Reuters reported recently on this Japanese engineering project to build a mecha that can transform into a sports car.

One thing I didn't see at the end of that video was them driving off in the sports car. Makes me suspicious that it doesn't really function as an automobile.

This feels overblown since she's doing nothing offensive except for that 1 picture which may be unintentionally. Most Asians would feel happy knowing that foreigners are wearing their countries dresses since that means their cultures getting recognition.

I can speak about this.
It's mostly an east Asian growing in Western countries thing.

The anger is because East Asians don't get to wear traditional clothing in public without getting considerable scrutiny.
Unless it's a an event like Halloween or some costume party.
Outside of that, you will get people looking weirdly at you.

It's like wearing a Muslim veil in public, but at least that has gotten some acceptance.
Maybe in time things can change for east Asians too.

"But isn't this just an effect of modernization?"
yeah well.. "modernization" brought with it cultural hegemony
English is the lingua franca and we all use Hindu Arabic numbers
..but that's another topic

Some east Asians don't care about this. I'd say a lot of Asian don't care about this.
But some really do. So, when they see someone who is obviously not East Asian wearing traditional east Asian garb, you can probably guess why they're upset.
and the feeling is even worse in this era where neo nazis are coming out of the woods.

A dress is just a dress. This whole furor is absurd. Though I'm of Irish heritage, I don't get upset by people wearing leprechaun hats on St. Patrick's Day either.

Now had she appeared in some type of makeup looking like Charlie Chan I could see a reason for outrage. That's not what's happening here.

Hell, if we keep going down this road, won't all anime cosplay by Westerners be seen as "cultural appropriation?" What's difference between dressing up like Naruto and wearing a Chinese dress?

I'm not sure if a leprechaun hat is traditional, actually
but I know that a Chinese dress is traditional
and whatever Naruto wears isn't

It's closer to dressing up as Native American
and we know that makes people angry, yes?

Well, as a person of Chinese descent, from experience, many of us actually like seeing non-Chinese people wearing traditional Chinese clothing like that. And really, a lot of Chinese people are usually pretty happy to see a non-Chinese person speak Chinese well too. It would be hypocritical to say Chinese that dress Western style are appropriating. That's dumb.

Although I did once dress up as a pimp--- not sure if I should be talking.. (this actually works btw)

Doesn't the official realize fewer doors means fewer ways for victims to escape?

Yes. They have to fight or die.

On that subject, would they be interested in the purchase of a gun which (little known fact) make you bullet proof and will surely be useful when the next school shooting comes around?

What I though was than it would create bottle neck, helping potential shooter making a bigger headcount.

Few doors are also great in case of an emergency like fire.

In summary, since "at least two armed officers were on campus" this probes it is a fallacy to say "arm teachers to stop gunmen" since surprise, surprise, they can't teleport to the scene (there are people running away in the halls) of the incident and the gunman will not have a banner over his head saying "bad guy. SHOOT". So the lieutenant governor, deflects the attention so that everyone watching FOX news or the tribune news network can think "we are not in the wrong, we would have stopped this earlier if not if it weren't for the meddling kids and your stupid doors".

Some commentators have observed that having fewer doors would force everyone to queue outside the one or two doors that remain and put themselves into a shooting gallery.

Not to mention that in this incident "Explosive devices were reportedly found on campus and the surrounding area", if there were only one or two exits it would have meant that he could blow the ones trying to exit thru one and shoot at leisure those trying to exit on the other end. But maybe the next crazy kid will learn from this and make sure to lock/clog/booby trap most doors and identify/target the armed officers first and even if that happens, legislators will only continue to talk, talk talk and pray (that this does not mean they will voted out of office).

Yep. And the idiom "shooting fish in a barrel" would have taken lots of meaning if fewer doors were there. What are those commentators on to say stuff without thinking twice first?

Summa cum laude? Not on our cakes!

Quote:
Carefully, [Jacob's mother] typed in the words she wanted on the cake: “Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018.”

Publix’s online system was unhappy with the word “cum.”

In place of cum, three hyphens appeared, as they do for some other profanities in family newspapers: Summa ––– Laude.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...o-summa-laude/

Quote:
Koscinski said she then had to explain why the grocery store censored “cum” from Jacob’s cake to her 70-year-old mother.

Umm, mostly it went well without any issues like taking offense or getting any undesired attention. Nothing too dramatic.

Puerto Rico pushes for Statehood claiming its a civil rights issue.

Still waiting for that 51st state.

Related to that idea: Division of California is on the state ballot for November.

The search for D.B. Cooper: Investigators say they've confirmed
skyjacker's identity by decoding long-lost 'confession':

"A team of cold-case investigators claim they’ve decoded a 1972 message by D.B.
Cooper — and that it contains a confession from Vietnam veteran Robert Rackstraw, long
suspected of being the infamous skyjacker.

The letter was addressed to “The Portland Oregonian Newspaper.”
