They should remake this like FMA. . I can't believe they made Akito as a male
And the story in the manga is getting far better and, I think, all of the good sides in the manga which I like is in the second part of the story (when it's getting more serious part and starts telling about Yuki's past).

Count me in, too. As time went on, the manga got too saturated with melodrama.

I like Momiji Souma the best!!! So cute, so kind and selfless!

I like the Souma Zodiac members in general. Despite all the pains and sufferings, they have never lost their innate kindness, and that touched me really.

In Vietnamese Zodiac, the cat replaces the rabbit (while all other 11 animals are the same)-- so the cat can go to the banquet! XD ..... I heard that it's because the cat is a contrast to the rat (I'm ignorant of the real reason behind it though)

I bet Ranma 1/2 (by Rumiko Takahashi) was quite an influence for Fruits Basket! You can see clear parallels between the two series. While Ranma 1/2 is humor-driven, Fruits Basket delves deeper into the drama. Another plus point is the way events and occurrences are organized in FB: revealing a little at a time while holding back the essentials. If the characters' personal stories were organized differently or told immediately, the story would be less appealing.

Besides having people turn into animals, I don't see any other connections between Furuba and Ranma.

Maybe the rabbit was ousted because it was a redundant rodent and cats are cuter.

It's just like Snake and Dragon.

I bet 100% that FB's author had read Ranma 1/2 and took some ideas from it.
Some examples: the interactions between Yuki & Kyou is very similar to that between Ranma & Hibiki.
Hatsuharu's terrible of sense of direction (does it ring any bell?)
and the themes of a belonging place, the wish to be accepted by society, etc.

Fruit Basket is nothing like Ranma.

Ranma is pretty much an all out harem comedy.

I like the happy ending.

However, one thing I'm most disappointed about is:
Momiji's story is the most interesting to me, but is utterly unresolved. Although his curse was broken very soon, though he's willing to stay a grade behind in order to meet his little sister Momo, there isn't a single scene showing Momiji playing with her. In the end, we never know whether or not Momiji shall be recognized by his mother and sister. What a big frustration!!

Too bad DEEN are jerks as always (They might honestly be my least favorite anime studio at this point), and won't adapt anymore considering they didn't even show the entire Zodiac in the anime .

From what I've heard (over on ANN, think it was on an ANNCast) there were a lot of disagreements between the manga-ka and the anime director and that Takaya was so unhappy with it that she didn't want anymore to be made. So partially Deen's fault for changing the last few episodes so much (you would have to ret-con the last few episodes for a sequel to even work) but also Takaya didn't want anymore.

See, I am probably the only person who likes Akito as a male.

Here are the reasons and it isn't for sexist reasons. I would have happily and gladly accepted Akito being female if it was done in two ways just a bit better. I think I stopped reading the manga when they revealed Akito as female.

The reason I like the anime adptation of Akito better than the manga OC of female is the way the stories work.

I find the story of someone suffering from a terminal illness they have no control over, someone struggling over accepting their own death, and someone struggling over the isolation of people far more intriguing than a jealous woman who doesn't want people to leave her alone.

Akito in the anime was a far more interesting character as a male. Because it wasn't about his love for his family members. The rest of the Zodiacs had freedom, no matter what, even though Akito bullied them put them in their place, and hurt them. They still had freedom.

They did not have the pressure of running a family, they did not have the pressure of knowing when they were going to die. He was frustrated and angry, and could not control the events around him. He had no choice.

Akito in the manga, as a female. Was basically abused by her mother that people would leave her, and she tried to deny it. It was more about her being alone and feeling jealous that people adored Tohru. Is basically how I sum it up.

One is more interesting than the other.

And I much prefer a story that doesn't tie into the whole love side of the story, instead its a well rounded and more developed character who ties himself into a love story.

I much prefer an exploration of the human psyche as one goes through illness, depression, loneliness, and the acceptance of ones death.

Over female who was abused and jealous of other peoples love because they'll take the people she loves away.
