I'm not really a Type-moon fanboy, neither have played the VN but this pilot episode was amazing.
Maybe it's just me but I love "smart dialogue" type shows, and this double length episode had plenty of it. Of course that doesn't mean I dislike action, which is very much false and I'm positive that will come later on. This pilot episode was all of the following: Intellectual, heartwarming, dramatic, sad and dramatic. Seeing Ilya's mom being married to Emiya's dad was suprising but not out of the ordinary. Seeing Loli Rin made me reminded me on how to do a moe character right. Seeing Rin's father and Sayaka towards the end was both sad and heartwarming. And that old man made me rage, but it's like one of those characters you love to hate. Visuals on the whole were very good, with only minor bits and pieces being subpar. Soundtrack on the whole was decent, though I'm guessing the best of Kajiara is soon to come. And Saber's closing lines: "I ask thee - Are you my master?" made me cry "F*ck Yea Saber" out loud. 10/10 for an awesome pilot episode. Let the Holy Grail War begin! I just hope this doesn't turn out like Hanasaku Iroha and then completely flop by the 3rd episode... EDIT: DEEN can go to hell. This pilot episode had more depth and crispness than the original FSN anime and UBW movie put together. Last edited by Pocari_Sweat; 2011-10-02 at 02:40. |

I found the pacing of this episode brilliant! A 10/10 from me! Interesting how the church keeps all those relics considering the difference in time between the formation of the Holy Grail and the time those relics date back to.

Probably the whole VN community doing this right now:
Spoiler for Video 1:
~And Saber appears and I *you know what goes in here*~ or the Deen hater version: Spoiler for Video 2:
~Man, this isn't Type-Moon. This is Deen. So I threw it on the ground! I don't need your shitty adaptations!~ Last edited by Pocari_Sweat; 2011-10-02 at 02:41. |

I don't think anyone in particular was keeping them, let alone the Church who certainly wouldn't hand them out like that. I got the impression that they just hired magical archaeologists to go find them or dig them up. Presumably they're better at that than normal archaeologists.

Maybe the church keeps some of the relics after the grail wars, at least the ones the new owners want to give away. That's an option never told before as far as I know. |

I would argue it kinda is. Now before you compare it to Shirou, I would state that Shirou's ideals were more abstract and also a form of self punishment. Proving that the world is fair is somewhat (as Waver is doing by trying to show that irregardless of upbringing any Mage can be just as good as another) lofty.

So Fate/Zero is excellent, though I'm not that surprised as I had high expectations coming in and thankfully it didn't disappoint. Things about the episode are already mentioned here, like Zouken must die, poor Sakura/Kariya, loli Rin is cute etc, so I don't have anything more to say (really, 7 pages already?). It's mostly infodump and dialogue, but it is a prologue and intro after all, they did a good decision in making it one-hour long (as waiting 2 weeks for the Servants to be summoned is just too long). Really, I think one must have played or at least watched the FSN anime coming in, otherwise it can be hard to follow, not to mention that they spoil some things already, like the fact that Sakura is Rin's sister and Kiritsugu is Ilya's father.

Man, Fate/Zero's first episode is already better than the entirety of the F/SN adaptation. ufotable is really amazing, I'm going to have to check out those Kara no Kyoukai films sometime.
The episode really was rather dialogue/info dump heavy, but it's better to get all that out of the way now. The various storylines and introductions for the first five masters interspersed with drama and tragedy were really well done. Nice to see Zouken finally animated after all these years, and he's even more monstrous, creepy and menacing a bastard as he was in the VN. The more serious mood of the series is welcome as well. Nice to see how a proper and expected holy grail war is truly set up with elite-level Magi filling the ranks of the participants rather than random high school kids being thrown into an outrageously dangerous situation most of them can't even begin to grasp the magnitude of. |
