The Florence Nightingale effect is were a nurse/doctor/caregiver develops romantic feelings towards their patient even if little contact or only basic care is given. But if the patient does not need that much help anymore, the feelings may fade.

If you need an example.

Think of Rin as a nurse and Ichika, a patient. Rin only provides basic care and contact is minimal. As time goes by, Rin begins to hold feelings for Ichika. Ichika eventually recovers enough and does not need that much care anymore and Rin's feelings fade.

Patient fell in love with the nurse because of his/her caringness, often, this is because the patient is emotionally insufficient, but not always. This is noted in the history of modern nursery, but not that detailed.

The feelings maybe reciprocated or not, but the later is more often in fiction (and of course, in real life).

Well that isn't the Florence Nightingale effect anymore. It's strictly for caregivers that develop feelings for their patients.

I can't remember what the opposite is called though.

I know that I can just look it up, but I want your thoughts on them as well. The last thing I want to do, as well as all of us, is have the Canon Characters be Out of Character in out fics. Even when I've put them in my fic for a bit in Chapters 6-8, I'm not sure if they're In Character or not.

I'm going to need them for Chapter 9, because that chapter is where things are going to get crazy!

Edit: I think it goes well with his Physical/Practical approach to problems... Usually Males think using their head first but if they can't resolve things with their intellect, they resort to physical mode of thinking.

Welcome to I.S. fanfic thread, I suppose you have yet to be familiar with how the fandom works, so let me give you a pointer (or five)

1. If you make an OC, be careful if it's male
1a. Female OC is a pain in the ass to write (since most I.S. fic writer are, in fact, male), but more easily passed by fandom.
2. Especially if he can use I.S.
2a. Alternative machine can be justified
3. Never forget about Ichika's own existence either
3a. If he got one of the canon girls, don't be too greedy
3b. OC harem however, is acceptable
4. You can explain the reason of why (for both of them), or not at all
5. As much as you can, keep the power balance
5a. So are spotlight distribution

I knew you're not a new author (I read your fic actually), however this fandom is extremely skeptical when it comes to male OC (long history), and many new author stumped on the points mentioned above and failed. I'll wait hopefully for this project of yours

This is what I think:

Ichika: Going Head-on... then if that fail. Formula a plan based on information collected. Lose his cool if people imitate Chifuyu's style.

Collateral damages expected.... (mostly because she don't really have much idea how her machine work and her machine is too high-spec to care)

Rin.....relies on brute forcing her way through things.... that's all you need to know. A little berserk-y yet still in control.

Charlotte is confident because she is the most skilled among the harem. She is rather careful too (considering that she is the only one who actually deploy an IS shield)

Laura... is a smug snake (that's why a lot of OC enjoy beating her up)... Why? Because she has AIC..... theoretically, nothing can touch her and she is trained by Badass Chifuyu (read: most OC are actually more likely to be taken down than end in victory)

Main characters are not a gauge for your character's skill... To be very honest, there are only two skilled IS pilots in Ichika's Harem: Charlotte and Laura, the rest are just decent at the very best.

It was dark. In this crammed space there was practically no light, save the windows at the cockpit. As a prisoner, he was forced to sit near the tail end of the plane between the guards and cargo in the hold. His hands and feet were chaffing from the cuffs and it was all he could do not to whine about how uncomfortable they were. Mind you he'd been in worse but he stopped caring long ago. Or more like he decided to stop caring. The boy closed his eyes and visualized a little game of sudoku.

Up front, one of the three soldiers assigned to security detail stared at the boy with apprehension and wonder. Really, however they looked at him he was just a kid, barely 15. A bit awkward, skinny and generally looked like the wind could bowl him over with the slightest breeze. But appearances were deceiving. They were transporting him as a prisoner after all and they were briefed on exactly how tight security had to be for him.

"Is it true he took out that whole terrorist organization on his own? HustleBack I think they called themselves?", one soldier nudged his long time friend in the arm.

A shrug. "How should I know? I wasn't there. If you want details, you should ask Bryant over there. Apparently, he was there. Saw first hand what that kid did. Was even part of the unit caught in the crossfire from the operation.", came the reluctant reply.

Across from the two was a burly man in his soldier's uniform. His eyes were hardened speaking of seeing things no man should probably witness in his lifetime. War does that to soldiers, this man though was just a fresh recruit just out of bootcamp. Hard to believe that such a harrowing experience came so soon. He caught the stares and looked away. His eyes automatically locking onto their prisoner. Bryant's angular jaw locked at the peaceful look on the boy's face and the urge to just draw his weapon and fire on the lad grew like fire in his veins. A bullet between the eyes was probably not enough compensation for what he went through that day.

Turning to the cockpit, Bryant called out. "Hey, how long before we reach the drop off?".

"About an hour!", the pilot shouted back. "Japan's still a long way from the Pride sir.".

"Tch.", the soldier cursed his luck and leaned into his seat. Hands now firmly gripping his assault rifle.

The boy opened his eyes as he piqued his ears and smiled. "They're here."

BANG!

A hole ripped into the cargo plane's hull and the first to be sucked out into their death was Bryant and the uncaring soldier.

For the umpteenth time that day, Orimura Chifuyu sighed at her little brother's stupidity as he could not even grasp the basic principles that came with the equalizer system of the IS. She held the book in one hand, fingers locking pristine pages between her fingers without so much as a crease. Her frustration was mounting and she considered hitting him with the volume despite wanting to maintain its currently mint condition. Still, she partly blamed herself. He was stuck piloting a machine that had no need for such a system and it her that urged him not to think about details when all he needed was a single goal, but would it kill him to at least read up on these things?

Thankfully, she was spared of this decision when her co-teacher Yamada ran in with a panicked look on her face. A knot formed in Chifuyu's stomach as the worst was expected. It always was when official matters concerned the brunhilde turned teacher. A few whispered words and Chifuyu's irritation levels went through the roof. She deigned from screaming an undignified "WHAT!?", instead settling for taking a deep breath and asking Yamada if steps were already taken to clean up this mess.

"We've already contacted class 1-2 that we'd need their representative candidate. All that's left now is you and the others."

Chifuyu closed the volume in her hands as she sighed. "I see.". Raising her voice, Chifuyu addressed the class how she usually did, frostily. "Class is now free study. Yamada-sensei and myself have been called to an emergancy faculty meeting. For all those thinking this is leisure time, I'll inform you that I will be conducting a quiz next meeting on the whole chapter of equalizer system theories. If you are as informed about it as Orimura here, then I suggest you use this time to study.". With her distinct brand of curtness and impersonality, Chifuyu bid the class her leave, subtly signaling her sibling to follow her. One that was followed by an even more subtle "or else..."

Ichika sat there confused and rose from his seat to follow. He stumbled when four phones suddenly went off simultaneously, all belonging to his four female companions: Houki, Cecilia, Charlotte and Laura. It was a bizzare sight that he had no time to ponder on. He quickly left the room in search of his sister when the scruff of his collar was pulled back with enough force to choke him right then and there.

"Next time be faster.", Chifuyu sighed as she dragged the young man along.

Ichika tried to pull away from her grasp but the strides were too fast and too long for him to right himself without passing out from lack of air. He had to chke for a good five minutes before being roughly thrown into a dark room where all his senses could register were blips and beeps.

"Wh-where am I? Chifuyu-nee-"

"It's Orimura-sensei you dolt!", she slammed her idiot brother's head with the book from earlier.

Nursing the hit, Ichika corrected himself, "O-Orimura-sensei. Where am I? And what are we doing here?"

Chifuyu ignored him and moved closer to a dimly lit computer and began to talking to somebody.

As the minutes ticked by, Ichika's eyes began to adjust in the darkness and he noticed that there were a fair number of the faculty manning various stations and computers. His sister was actually deep in conversation with Yamada Maya-sensei who was getting a scolding. Something along the lines of sending a group text message being less than inconspicuous. Especially when the recipients get the text at the exact same time in less than 5 meters from each other.

Looking around some more, Ichika spotted his second childhood friend, Huang LingYin standing over the shoulder of one teacher and studying something on said teacher's computer screen. He decided to approach the pair but the intention was cut short as the door opened and the four girls whose phones went off earlier filed in.

"What's the situation?", short statured Laura, immediately took hold of the situation. Such was the focus of a soldier in these situations.

This only served to confuse Ichika who was just dragged here without so much as a what or why. "Situation?", he echoed the last word.

"So is it another rogue IS?", Houki quickly asked after doubing Ichika's bewilderment. How come she knew more than he did despite being the only none representative candidate in this room?

Chifuyu only regarded them with a look that silenced any notion of being in command before issuing issuing one order. "Sit.".

And much like frightened dogs with tail tucked between their legs, they sat. LingYin joining them shortly.

One sweeping look and Chifuyu could not hold the sigh that had been building up in her in the past ten minutes. "Everyone. You are assembled here today because you have been called by request of the United States for a favor.".

"A favor?", this unnecessary interjection earned Ichika another bonk on his head.

"That's right, a favor.", Chifuyu waved one hand at her colleague and a hologram screen much like the one during the Silverio Gospel briefing appeared before them. "The situation is dire so I'll cut this short.". A map appeared on screen and showed a flight path and an arrow travelling along it. "One hour ago, a cargo plane en route to ISA was intercepted by unidentified assailants. What that plane contains is a criminal that is to be kept here within our walls for the safety of himself and those around him. Take note that this criminal is, armed or not, extremely dangerous. Our radar has found them to be fourty minutes off our coast and is losing altitude at an alarming rate. We don't expect them to last long against their opposition.". A few buttons by the person at the terminal and the screen switched contents. "We have confirmed that their pursuers are three Type-I Golems. They are armed with high powered energy cannons and are very well armored. Your mission is to secure the safety of the transport's package and crew and bring them here to ISA. If there are any questions, leave them for later unless it is relevant to the mission at hand.".

It seemed all of the teens knew the severity of the situation. Or at least Chifuyu's angry tone as the thousands of inquiries they wanted to make were held at bay by the piercing glare she gave them.

"Very well then. You may launch immediately!".

Wind whistled and a high pitched trill echoed off the thin aluminum walls of the plane. Annoying as it was, the young man couldn't do anything about it because of his bindings. If his hands were free, the first thing he'd do was throttle the soldier by doorway of the cockpit. The man was clearly unfit for this line of work if his screaming was anything to go by. Much too skittish to survive the battlefield. Noticing that the pressure was slowly stabilizing, the prisoner was thankful that their pilot was smart enough to drop altittude lest they all suffocate. He could clearly see the ocean through the hole from where he sat. The enemy was also clear in sight as it zipped about in the sky.

It was an odd thing how his luck was working today. Being chained and strapped down to his chair was a bad thing, but that was what kept him from being sucked out of the vacuum earlier. The only reason the plane was even in the air right now was because their enemy decided to send in high power low mobility types. Relatively speaking ofcourse. Those things were still IS and they would probably rip the cargo plane to shreds once in range. The initial attack was probably fired from just outside maximum range so they weren't obliterated in one shot. Well, enough with the calculations, it was high time to plan an escape.

"Hey!", the boy tried to get the screaming soldier's attention. No dice, still screaming. Though now it changed from just a high note to actual curse words.

"Get us out of here man!", the soldier demanded at the pilot.

"Like hell I can do that.", the pilot cursed as he wrestled with the controls. "That hole they blew in did more than rip into the hull, they clipped one of our engines too. I can neither get altittude nor speed at this rate. Even at full throttle I'm not sure if we can even out run those things.". One look at the radar showed two blips incoming from their six and one from one o'clock.

"We shouldn't be too far from ISA right? Can't we ask them for back-up or something? This is their shit now after all!".

"They should have noticed us by now. But even with high speed IS, the fastest they can get here is a good seven minutes. I'm not sure we can last that long."

"Then what the hell do we do?", the soldier was at his wit's end. It almost looked like he was going to throw his M-16 to the ground. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

"Throw me overboard.", suggested their prisoner.

"Wha- Are you stupid?", the pilot yelled without looking back. "Just 'cause we throw your scrawny ass out doesn't mean that we're gonna go any faster!".

The young man shook his head, "Not that.". He fell silent for a moment before continuing. "They're after me and the cargo on this ship. They probably won't stop shooting at this plane until I'm dead and this stuff behind me destroyed.".

"R-really?", a spark of hope lit up in the soldier's eyes.

A smirk, "That's right.".

"Then let's do this!", the skittish soldier slung away his gun and grabbed the keys for their prisoner's straps.

"Stop!", the pilot shouted, "We need to get him to that island. It's the mission."

"Man, screw the mission! We're going to die!", the soldier spelled it out for the pilot as he undid the locks that held the chained youth down.

Once those were off, the boy arched his back to pop a few stiff vertebrae. He raised his hands but incapable of going over his shoulder in this seated position because the cuffs on his wrists were connected to the ones on his ankles. "You mind taking these off to?".

The soldier shook his head. "Hell no. I've read what you can do with those hands. No way am I letting you free while you're around me.".

The boy shrugged. "Suit yourself.".

Annoyed at how calm the young man was, the soldier grabbed him by the back of his collar and shoved him right to the gaping wound of the plane. Staring down at the expanse of blue all around, the soldier stopped moving and gazed fearfully into the distance where three growing dots were.

"What? Lost your nerve?".

The soldier looked down at the boy in his hand. Smirk still present and oozing a sense of superiority he couldn't stand.

"You should drop me now. Or you'll die."

Closing hs eyes, the cowardly military man pushed the boy out.

"That was close Rong. They had a lock on you there."

"So you keep telling me.", the young man named Rong muttered into his communicator.

"They seem to prioritize killing you over getting the AE. How odd.".

"Shut up Croixas. I know this is all just a show for you."

A slow slurping sound could be heard over the transceiver. "Quite. Watching my creation in action over a cup of instant coffee is exactly how I want to spend my mornings.".

"Whatever.", the boy grumbled as he looked down at the oncoming ocean. "How long are you planning to sleep? Activate now! R:Evolution!".

An explosion sounded above him as the cargo plane's tail was violently ripped off by six objects that came flying down to Rong. They quickly surrounded the falling lad and aligned themselves around him. He watched them all with a slick smile on his face.

"PILOT CONFIRMATION: RONG. ACTIVATION PROTOCOL: COMBAT"

"Assemble.", he commanded the machine.

"ASSEMBLING".

Two of the pieces opened up on either side of Rong and clasped over his fore arms, snapping the chains that were in the way much like biting noodles. They locked into place and exposed their shape as gauntlets. Another two flying behind Rong accelerated and unfolded themselves horizontally. The young man's legs slipped into the pieces and the armor began to fold themselves into greaves, snapping the chains there just as easily. The fifth piece came flying forward and roughly hugged onto his sternum, clasps locking over his shoulders and torso. The last piece was the back unit practically slamming itself onto the teen. Reorienting his course.

The last of the initialization processes kicked in and Rong gunned his boosters just as his armored feet touched water. Black material began oozing out of the armor and over the orange prison suit that he was wearing.

"That was close.". Rong appreciated his near brush with death as he flew only five feet off the water. His thrusters were still cutting a trench into the water but not a single drop touched him as he continued his flight.

Looking up, the teen checked whether the transport plane was okay. Despite the lack of tail and only three functioning engines, it seemed to be falling at an aceptably fast pace. "Hopefully they'll survive the crash.", he muttered before the direct neural feed HUD began beepng warnings.

Barrel rolling to the left, Rong let a large diameter charged particle beam sail by. The blooming radiation just singing his own unit's energy shield. "Tsk! Right, I have to take care of those guys first.".

Being nearer to the group of two enemies first, Rong decided he would deal with the closest threats before anything else and unfurled the folded wings of his unit. "Let's go R:Evolution!". The sleek machine jettisoned over to the two hulking enemies so fast that sonic booms travelled across the water's surface.

They were huge, easily over 9 feet if Rong had to estimate. Type-I Golems. Exactly the same types that had been sent to collect his head yesterday in the cell block. How annoying. He gave a battlecry as he stopped just in front of one of the metal hulks and unleashed six dagger bits from his wings. They shot out with an uncanny precision and quickly drilled themselves into the joints of the enemy. Quickly disabling an arm and both legs of the enemy machine.

In this gap of three seconds, Rong estimated he only had two more before the enemy figured out what to do with him being far too close to use those particle launchers of theirs. He quickly grabbed the two closest dagger bits and quickly ripped into his current victim's chest armor with two back-hand slashes. He finished by stabbing one dagger to the gut and a twisting arm lock that ended with him cutting it clean off. With a kick for good measure, he sent the first of three enemies plummeting to the ocean depths. Narrowly avoiding the grab from the accompanying enemy.

Rong pulled his hand to the side and the six dagger bits which were embedded into the first enemy flew out of the ocean hovering around him again. "Let's keep going then.", he grinned.
