The other thing about the S-Class mages from either guild: remember, Phantom Lord got disbanded (I think... I could be wrong on this). With Phantom Lord out of the way, Fairy Tail kept going against stronger and stronger opponents, from the Oracion Seis to the Edoras mages... not only that, but it was the spotlight characters who got all the hard fights (like Erza). And Mira... well, she was always a Demon, but was sealed away for a long time... bringing that form back, it seems it never lost any power
As for Natsu... I have a horrible feeling this is going to pull a Naruto (DISCLAIMER: I haven't followed Naruto in a looooooooooooong time, so the following information may be highly out-of-date) : Naruto is among the strongest ninja, but his official rank is still rather low on the scale. Natsu is certainly among S-class rank, but for story needs or whatnot, he's not going to become S-class officially

Natsu and Naruto are in very different positions though, the newspapers write about Natsu's collateral damage, and he's on a normal power level, while Naruto is like, strongest in the universe and ranked on a cat rescue level...

Natsu... isn't exactly on a normal power level. Okay, maybe compared to others in the guild, but if you want to get technical, he's on a different power level via DS magic... I only know of one other character who could level whole towns on a daily basis like Natsu tends to (okay, so he only levels half the town...), and that's good ole Lina Inverse

Keep in mind that this is still a test. It's very easy to have them make a twist where "your determination to keep fighting a stronger opponent lets you pass" or something like that. So even if Natsu advances it doesn't necessarily mean that Gildartz will actually lose to Natsu, which would be kind of annoying so early.

Gildarts was about to fail Natsu there and then though. Despite his admiration of Natsu's highly improved strength, it wasn't just a simple"kay, you pass because you've shown enough spirit, and well, I kinda messed up a little bit with my magic there."

I have just finished read all the latest chapters. I can't say I enjoyed the Edolas arc very much but this new one seems very promising. This very much reminds me of the Chuunin exams which was my favorite Naruto arc. I gotta like the way they mixed up the teams aswell. Alot of surprising team ups for me. I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

I think this chapter pretty much solidifies Gildarts as the definitive strongest mage ( aside from Makarov ) in Fairy Tail so far.
Even against other mages who wore the title of Ten Great Mages like Gerard or mages who clearly had roughly equal level of magical prowess to a TGM like Zero, Natsu had never ever felt the same immense pressure or fear from them that stopped him in his tracks like Gildart's. Zero's only had that effect on Lucy of all people lol.
