Episode 3:

Well that was interesting. Seems like the band Kumiko is in doesn't have many second years...

And this episode also highlights how much work the group still needs to work in order to make just the minimal for the Nationals. Anyways, I kinda like the solemn drama so far. Their teacher is quite honest about what he thinks too even if the words seems like a harsh reality for now.

That 'Shinsekai Yori' theme at the end had a nice style to it played by Kousaka imo.

Well as they say, garbage in garbage out. If they're not willing to put in the bare minimum of effort, why should he?

Reina's exactly like I thought she was. Generally calm and collected, except when things get tough for the band. That's when her passion shows through.

I don't know what their deal is. They wanted to aim for Nationals yet refused to make some efforts. The ikemen sensei was right about that kind of attitude, they were wasting everyone's time.

On the other hand, Reina was so moe towards the end!

I really like Taki-sensei. He gave the students a choice, and now he means business. Too bad the slackers obviously don't appreciate that.

Great show so far.

I'm really liking the way it's exploring the group dynamics as a source of drama. Very interesting stuff.

Color me pleased again this week. The pacing was pretty good, and the episode had its good share of laid back moments and drama with a proper balance at that. I dunno if it is just because it is an anime about music, but the classic tunes were quite noticeable this week.

I also agree with the general sentiment here: Taki-sensei was right in his approach. It is rather baffling that a club still composed of second and third years can be so off tune for a beginner piece (I admit I don't play any instrument, but as far as I was told by some acquaintances, this piece isn't really difficult). If you add their lack of motivation coupled with their choice of going to the nationals, I can't help but think his honesty was quite necessary. It would have been a disservice otherwise, turning their "objective" completely hollow.

I also liked the way they handled the conflict within the club. It supplements the drama regarding their poor skills, but also fleshes out the side characters without the need of a "character episode of the week" in an obvious fashion.

Considering the opening, they will somehow make it, so it will be quite interesting how the band club will deal with this very first crisis and how Taki's real boot camp will look like

I really liked this episode.

The teacher seems right on the money with his approach and his attitude. I give him full props for going at it this way. He asked these people what they wanted to do, he gave them the option and told them what would be involved with both. And now he's asking them to live up to it. If they can't even be bothered to seriously practice an easy piece like that then there's no point to him showing up. That bunch just wants the fun of going to the even without putting in any effort. If they show up with that level of commitment they will just embarrass themselves.

It's just shows the interesting character dynamics. This is a group made up of people who don't care. There are some people who despite the laziness of those around them still want to play music and perform, but it seems like many of them just are there to play casually.

I'm curious how this conflict gets resolved. This is an old wound that hasn't closed. Of course the thought that it would be was naive for everyone. Every year will bring in a new influx of first years some of which are going to be motivated. You are constantly going to have this clash.

If you are refering to the anime it was an indirect reference. As Kumiko mentioned, the real reference was to Dvorak's 9th, from the new world. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjyBN52kNBg).

It may be nothing, but I'm kind of curious about the discussion between Kumiko and her sister. Considering she taught her how to play you'd think her sister would be more understanding about the need to practice at home in order to improve. Don't think I would have gotten all that better during high school if I didn't regularly take my instrument home to do some practice.

hm, tough episode 3 for the girls.

While I do think the teacher's approach is interesting, and was really surprised at it in episode 1, I think he could offer a bit more guidance. Well, maybe once the 'weak' ones leave and its only the strong-willed ones he be more active.

I think its great that he's giving such control to the group, building up initiative and independence at an important stage of growth will help them both in the band and in real life in the coming years, but the kicking the cub off the cliff and seeing how it does is harsh.

I can see where its going though, the group decided to take Nationals seriously, so the teacher is too, and do a hardass approach. I wonder how he would have handled things if they decided to just foster memories and just learn a piece or two together. Would he have adopted a gentle teacher attitude?

Enjoyed Reina's yell at the end, as predicted, she still is passionate about it, but going in and snapping orders at everyone would have been unrealistic and be in a totally different kind of music anime genre.

Some lewd lines this episode

Spoiler for band practice:

Regarding the club having the Nationals as its aim: wasn't one of the points raised in the previous episode that the choice between being competitive and free-and-easy wasn't really a choice at all?

I don't think the band club need to be pampered. Instead, they urgely needed a reality check first and foremost.

Taki's approach isn't random at all considering what happened in episode 2: right at the start, he realized the motivation is quite lacking with the band club. When he reminded them what was the objective last year, the students were awfully silent, and Haruka's reaction was meek for a club president, which makes one question about their stance right there.
Even though they aren't responsive at all, they still picked the same objective despite knowing the aftermath of such choice.

Therefore, you can only conclude 2 things: either they are talentuous enough but too laid back to have a firm answer to his inquiry, or they are just following the flow.
In both case, he must ascertain their motivation, skill and assertiveness.

It wouldn't really help in their current situation to have the usual guidance if the band isn't giving their all. So this ensemble was a good test to shed light about their current situation.

That's only an issue for Kumiko because of her worry about Reina.
Even if other students were also wondering about that, a sizable number of them still made a choice in making to the nationals instead of a blank vote or playing for fun.

Looks like the sensei had the right idea. If they are not going to put any effort into it then he has no reason to be there. This episode showed that most of the members of the club are simply not motivated. They are just not willing to put any work into it.

Reina seems to only really break her calm and collected thing when the band is concerned. That is when she gets emotional.

Sensei's methods and policy really does make for better television, but I personally really don't like that type of teaching lol. A little guidance wouldn't hurt, but it seems like some of the students just don't give a shit. They need to find their own motivation.

So lemme get this straight, the second-year members who quit were in their first year and butted heads with the current third-year members?

No, the previous first year members were motivated, but not all of them. Those who were slackers were also first year students (red ribbon).
After a year, most of those who were motivated gave up. Those who remained are now second years (blue ribbon), and most of them are those that aren't motivated.

The third years (green ribbon) are the leaders such as Haruka and Asuka.

P2: "Practise!"

Sensei has a point. If they're not prepared to put in the time and actually practise, then they're wasting their own time and his. It's all about the practise, practise, and even more practise if you want to be even halfway decent.
Clearly, if they're just goofing off then they might as well quit and do something else instead.

Yeah, Sensei, tell them who's boss! I like him better than that Otaku teacher this cour, and he hasn't been on screen for even a quarter of the air time. XD

That said, he is the teacher after all, so it's his duty to teach them. Maybe he's just waiting for the band to REALLY beg to teach them, then he's going to bring out the whip. I mean, this story is about going to nationals, right? (or I hope it is, as I likened it to Japanese baseball stories XD) So they better shape up quick, and the only way they accomplish this is with the teacher shaping them up.

With a lot of the screentime also being shared by none of the main four, this has skyrocketed to my second favourite show of the season. Really helps too that Shuichi for some reason knows that Kumiko is wondering what happened to the second years, so at least I have some ammo...
