The Three Kingdoms is hardly the first Chinese work to have been exploited by Japanese manga/anime/games/etc. The most popular works to base stuff off of seems to be the Journey to the West and the Four Legendary Beasts. If anything, it's sort of strange that the Three Kingdoms aren't used more often since it seems to be the most popular piece of Chinese literature in Japan.

Ikkitousen doesn't even pretend to be vaguely representative of the actual Romance of the Three Kingdoms, so I think that the criticism in this regard is misplaced. I'd say that it's more likely to spark interest in the original work.

I don't know if a bishoujo game exists based on the bible, but the Angel Sanctuary manga is sort of similar to what you're proposing (Admittedly, it's based more on Kabbalic texts than the bible). The bible just doesn't seem to be popular enough in Japan to serve as the basis for creative works.

Ultimately, Ikkitousen is only very loosely based on the 3 Kingdoms. It's different from genuine manga adaptions of RoTK or even those that take certain liberties with it's story-telling porpotions like Legend of Dragon's Son or Ravages of Time. Really, it's no worse than Saiyuki making out the innocent, meek yet highly disciplined monk Xuan Zang into the gun-trotting smoker Genjyo Sanzo or even altering the epic adventure/quest of enlightment into a quirky jeep journey to defeat evil.

Ryuuroden/Legend of Dragon's Son is looong due for an anime adaption.

When I watched Ikki Tousen back in 2003, it was quite an eye opener, with its graphic violence and unabated skin scenes. Despite my immunity to such scenes since those times, one could still assume that progress would be made in 4 years time. Upon watching the promotional trailer for Dragon Destiny, my expectations ran high with its no holds barred approach, in essence, that Ikki Tousen has further evolved.

Upon watching the first episode of DD, I started to have second thoughts about the series. Never mind that the TV aired version is censored (a practical DVD sales tool) and that the story centers around the Toushi from Seito Gakuen (judging from the ending sequence persepctive), thereby demoting Hakufu (who only makes a cameo appearance) to a supporting status (Unchou is more popular than Hakufu in the manga after all).

I have a problem when the animation level of DD (by Arms) seems prominently inferior to the first series (by JC Staff). True, the staff is totally different and all, but I had high hopes for Arms ever since Elfen Lied, and Character Designer and Animation Director Rinshin is a notable illustrator. I suppose this comes from comparing Ryo Mou from both series, since she's still voiced by Kaida Yuuko.

Being a sequel, you can't expect much in terms of originality, but at least there's the manga storyline to follow. Although Hakufu and her mother (who both will retain the original seiyuus Asano Masumi and Inoue Kikuko) are not present, the comic relief factor is made up for by Ryuubi. Since I didn't especially care for the guys maiming girls scenes from the first series, I would pretty much prefer an all girls warfest.

I do recommend people to watch the first series for those who haven't seen it (although it's not listed here) , otherwise there is a high chance one could be left in the dark regarding the relationship between the schools.

Ikki Tousen is a good title for those who are into battle and fanservice, but history buffs should stay clear of it. Watching it for its entertainment value is probably the most prudent way to go.
