THose stripes on Haruhi's uniform don't really seem to fit with the rest of the uniform.

Second, why is this series so popular? I can think of several possible reasons

1. because the female casts are pretty

2. fascinated by the fact that a high school student is practically a god yet oblivious to the fact

3. the semi sci-fi setting, lots of techno mumbo.

4. all of the above

please correct or add anything i might have missed. much appreciated.
The main protagonist is very dynamic, generally excited and cheerful, very take-charge, quite humourous at times, has explosive mood swings, and is domineering in a cool way.

In anime, it's usually only one or more of the top antagonists that gets to enjoy being such a character.

It's rather refreshing to see these qualities in the main protagonist in an anime show. Particularly when that main protagonist is female (you could make an argument that Goku, Monkey D. Luffy, and a few other anime main protagonists are a bit similiar to Haruhi in the ways that I mentioned, but Haruhi really stands alone as a main female protagonist that's like this).

The title "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" does seem a bit odd to me given how Haruhi's character develops, but it's certainly true that she's melancholic before the SOS Brigade really gets into gear. After it, though, she's one of the more cheerful anime main protagonists around.

The title was the title for the first book that the main story in the anime is based off of.

Later books follow the formula of "The [Random Word] of Haruhi Suzumiya".

Not sure where should post this; or it's been posted?
anyway, for you who can read Japanese and have niconico account, while waiting for SHnY second season you can enjoy the SHnY gaiden, English dub version with Japanese subtitles (the gaiden story). Though lot of explicit words, it's really funny and I think the story is quite well written.

I wonder if someone will make the English version of it with Japanese audio, of course.

OK, here's the links
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2069673 ← SHnY I
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2161712 ← SHnY II

Oh, yeah? Thanks for the info!

I haven't read any of the novels at all, so it's cool to know this now. It does explain the title of the anime a bit better.

The 4 volume of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya came out in north-america, in regular and limited edition.

Because Kyoto Animation are made of morons.

In reality, it's because they didn't have the time or money to keep animating it, though this has changed as they have become more mainstream and popular.

And there are more episodes coming out, probably in July or October this year.

I would think that since Haruhi was scheduled to be a 14 part series, running out of time or money didn't factor into it.

And season 2 (at this point) is anybody's guess.

Season two is confirmed. Just not a release date.

I realize that Haruhi was scheduled for a 14 episode series, but because KyoAni couldn't afford to make it longer.

No, the programming block was for a 14 episode series which KyoAni produced. No more, no less.

No, I phrased that wrong. At the time, KyoAni didn't have enough money to produce longer series while keeping the same quality. (I think.) Up until Kanon 06, all their shows were half-season.

I'll give you that.

Though, I'm thinking it's the quality issue more than money, and K2K6 laid the groundwork for their foray into 2-cour series.

I have a question that I hope someone can answer. At the end of the second episode revolving around the island murder mystery, when they're riding the ferry back to the mainland, Itsuki is staring very intently at what turns out to be a hairy mole on Kyon's neck. What was up with that? Just Itsuki 'drinking in the sights', or was it meant to be something more sinister? I almost thought it was some kind of mark on Kyon ... ^^;

It's not in the novel, so it doesn't matter.

I just think it was KyoAni mindfucking us, really.
