Short answer: Because I know jack-all about how the Infinite Library works, and made it up.

Longer answer:

My theory is that the Infinite Library is in its own little pocket dimension, accessible through specialized entryways (akin to the Star Trek-ish transporters we see in action in StrikerS episode 14) that cut through sideways from this dimension to that. Therefore, it is possible for someone to go through such an entryway in Midchilda Ground Forces HQ, and for someone else to go through another entryway in Random Administered World 42, and end up in the same Infinite Library.

This is due to what I'm assuming the Infinite Library to be: a dimension consisting of all information that existed and will ever exist, hence "infinite". Since humans deal poorly with actual applications of infinity, though, the Library has been constrained with all sorts of specialized and powerful barrier spells (hello there Yuuno) to converge onto a manageable set of possibilities. Much of what TSAB knows as "history" is based on going through every book (or other data medium) in that small space and cataloguing it. Now and again, an expansion is announced, and work on the Library stops while they attempt to open up the accessible Library-space to more information.

Now, if I'm completely incorrect, and the Infinite Library does not work this way, then I'm done. This is the absolute basic foundation on which my story is set, and if it isn't possible, then there will be no more story. Everything gets scrapped, I'll be left with nothing, gone, fare thee well, so on and so forth.

Well Keroko's Rogues are a really small force, so a new division isn't too hard to cook up. Like I stuff the Saint Guard to the brim with grunts, with only the lead Trinities bearing names, and even then I've several unnamed Trinities for numbers now and to have names in future my our OCs get to work with them. Expandability is a good either, but you can also start small, since Riot 6 is so tiny.

Alight a rundown:

For the most of the 1st gen, Charlie left the force before Kha joined. He was Charlie's replacement. The old man left as he no longer believed in Celestial Being due to an incident. The Sanders died in a extra-vehicular mission gone bad, leaving Kha as the last Meister.

Kha was then joined by 3 still anonymous pilots transferred from another department. However, another FUBAR mission and some personal issues later, the 3 left the Silverna Team. When Kha was older, he trained 4 more knights in his Way. They are Gimmy (TTGL), Fye (Macross), Yui Hiro (GW) and the young Taiyo (MRR).

But the 2nd gen will return in StrikerS... And late Tiera will be replaced by someone we all know.

Midchilda East Base Training Ground D was situated some distance from the administrative buildings, and a long way from any civilian areas. Worn signs with large scary letters over even scarier finely printed legalese warned against using any magic ranked over AA in the area on threat of moderately severe disciplinary action, unlike Training Grounds A and B, which were built for that very purpose and wisely situated even further away from breakable objects like cities.

Three-quarters of the 37th Criminal Investigation And Apprehension unit were gathered at the training ground Home Point, where they had an impressive view of a small cluster of commercial mid-rise buildings materialize from thin air, or at least what passed for thin air from this distance. One building in particular rose above the rest, gleaming in the morning sunlight.

"Your goal will be to infiltrate that tall building, taking care to keep from unnecessarily damaging the infrastructure along the way, retrieve the objective on the top floor, and apprehend the target alive," Rancer said. "There will be enemy drones along the way, and you may take them out at your leisure, but you do not need to defeat all of them to proceed. There will be no time limit, but the longer you take, the more likely it is that the situation may change." He shot a glance at the building in question. "Meaning that Ivey might get bored, and start improvising."

"Training limiters have been placed on all participants in this exercise," Nova said, tapping breezily on the console,"but there will be no limit on cartridge use. Take as long as you'd like to get ready, and then we'll begin."

Reiz extended a hand, palm up. On it was a small object the size and approximate shape of a stubby pencil, attached to a chain necklace. "Impulse," Reiz commanded, "set up!"

Rancer nodded. "Good luck."

Reiz clutched her quarterstaff Device, gave him a small bow, and then took a running start before launching herself into the air.

"She's going high," Nova observed. "She's making good time to the target building, even without a flight speed booster spell."

"Probably wanted to get a look around first," Rancer said. "Pardon me, ma'am." He reached over to hit a button, and another screen popped up. "The first of the drones should be closing in on her... now."

Reiz didn't even slow down, as she swung her staff like a bat, and slammed it into the drone's shield, smashing through easily. Two more drones approached her; she rammed one with the butt end of her Device, throwing up a shield to block the shots of the other. Impulse ejected a cartridge shell, and flames erupted from its ends.

"Is it me," Rancer said, as the carnage continued on the screen, "or does it seem odd that Reiz has a Device like Impulse? Is it a personal Device, did she inherit it, or something else I'm missing?"

Nova pulled up another screen. "Well, it is registered to her name, and there were no irregularities found regarding it, but Devices generally don't have a lot of paperwork attached to them. Is there a problem?"

"No, it's nothing, ma'am. Idle curiosity."

Reiz faced the larger, sturdier drones now, and was fending them off with what appeared to be a shield spread across an entire flank. Impulse ate another cartridge as Reiz shouted "Firewall!"

"Mana conversion affinity for fire," Nova noted.

Rancer scratched his chin. "A lot stronger than Ivey's own affinity for ice."

A globe of fire hung in the skies, before suddenly exploding in a wave of smoke. The drones were only singed at most, but their retaliatory beams cut through the smoke without striking anything.

"There she is," Rancer said, pointing. Reiz had simply dropped out of the cloud of smoke she had created as a distraction, and was now just entering the target building, through the front door. A couple of smaller drones attempted to follow, but were destroyed by a gout of flame.

"Switching to indoor observation," Nova said. The screens flickered briefly with static before changing over. "That's odd. There shouldn't be any interference at this range..."

Inside, Reiz had smashed open the elevator doors, checked that the elevator was below her in the basement, and fired a tiny but brilliant point of light upwards, illuminating the shaft. With a cry of "Rocketstream!" she sped upwards, a trail of smoke marking her path.

"The smoke's clearing up a lot quicker than I expected," Rancer noted. "I wonder if that means..."

Reiz reached the top floor, and pried open the doors with Impulse. The retrieval objective, a small black box, stood in the center of a field of debris, apparently unguarded.

Rancer sighed. "I recognize this one."

Nova, frowning: "I didn't expect Ivey to cause such a mess. I suppose this doesn't count against Reiz, but I don't see... oh."

"Exactly, ma'am: Ivey's set up a trap. That's her Dispersion Field causing all the interference, and notice how Reiz's flames aren't as large due to the magical disruption. It's not enough to slow Reiz down, but the temperature in there's dropped significantly, and that has to be distracting, at the least. And that's not all..."

Reiz approached the box slowly, looking around warily for traps.

"Boo," Ivey said.

Reiz spun around, and Ivey would have lost her head if she hadn't ducked in time. "I'll be your dimensional fugitive for today," she sang, swinging her chain Device Mistral lazily. "Catch me if you can."

Reiz took a step backwards instead. "Firewall!"

"Now, that's not very effective," Ivey chided, as the immolating divide shot up between them. "You can't escape with just the- WHOA!" She snapped Mistral forward to deflect a sizeable fireball that shot out of the barrier, and dodged to the side as it was rapidly followed by a flame-wreathed staff strike. Reiz emerged as the Firewall dissipated, her breath clouding in the chilled air, laying onto Ivey's defenses like an enraged ifrit, illuminated by the incandescance of Impulse's ends, as two more empty cartridge shells were spat out onto the floor.

"Remember," Ivey grunted, desperately blocking every attack with Mistral's rapidly-diminishing length, broken links scattering with every hit, "that- ungh! That you're supposed to- ergh, capture me alive." She ducked, and touched the floor. "Crystal Patch!"

A sheet of ice appeared beneath Reiz, and she stumbled and fell as her boots unexpectedly lost traction. Ivey springboarded off the wall behind her, somersaulted over Reiz's head, snaked Mistral out, and snagged Reiz's staff out of her hands. "Hah!"

Reiz held out a hand, and Impulse reappeared in it with a flash of flame.

"Oh."

Reiz didn't bother getting back to her feet, but slid forward on her knees, gaining speed. She brought her staff forward, planted it firmly on the ground, and vaulted forward with a solid fiery kick on Ivey that broke through Ivey's hasty barrier and sent her flying. Ivey let out a grunt as she impacted against the wall, and looked up to see Reiz level Impulse at her face, the heat waves distorting the air around them.

"Um," Reiz said quietly. "You are, uh, under arrest. Surrender, please?"

Ivey managed a half-grin, as sweat dripped down her face. "Do I get to say a couple of last words before I go?"

"What?"

"Mistral Cage!"

Reiz swatted away a blurred projectile, but more were coming, every severed and broken link from Mistral's chain, loosed in the fight and before when Ivey had seeded the area, converging on her, connections forming and strengthening before she could free herself from them. Impulse clattered to the floor, followed by Reiz, now completely wrapped in a cocoon of diamond-hard chains of ice.

"Mmf!" she whimpered, muffled.

"You and me, kid," Ivey muttered, still slumped against the wall, exhausted.

Rancer, now in his barrier jacket, floated up outside the windows. Finding no obvious means of entry, he drew a fist back and shattered a pane with a shielded punch. "The exercise is over," he announced, stepping carefully through the broken shards of glass. He nudged the objective box to the side with his foot. "You did very well, Reiz."

"You're good," Ivey agreed. "Really good."

"Mmf," Reiz opined.

"We'll review the video later, to point out areas to improve upon, but overall, I'd say that I can't find much fault with your tactics or skill. At least, nothing that can't be corrected with what we like to call on the job training, the bitter humour of which I am sure you will discover soon enough."

"Mmf?"

Rancer sighed. "Ivey, would you kindly remove the chains? I don't think that's very comfortable for Reiz, and she did just have a busy morning."

"Aw, do I have to?" Ivey whined. "She's all nice and wrapped up like a present! It's like cutie takeout!"

"Mmf!?"

"Ivey..."

"Oh, all right."

Nova had apologetically disappeared on a mysterious errand, and so Rancer was left minding the office while waiting for the other two ladies to finish showering and cleaning up after the exercise.

A flashing light on the desktop comm device indicated an incoming call, voice only, and Rancer patched it through. "37th Criminal Investigation And Apprehension, Captain LaSalle here. How may I help you?"

"Hello, Captain. It's been a long time since we last talked, hasn't it?"

Rancer stared blankly at the comm, before memory flipped a card. "Inspector Acous! It's good to hear from you." Well, not always, since the inspector usually had some request or new information which invariably meant more work for the unit, but at least he was polite about it.

"Well, I've been out of contact for a while, but that's another matter. Anyway, I've just received a copy of the report on site E-203, and I'd like to interview you and Lieutenant de Lorien in person, whenever you're available."

Huh? "Uh, that would be fine, Inspector. If I may ask, though, is it an urgent matter?"

A silvery laugh. "I'm not too sure myself, to be honest, but I would guess that it is rather time-sensitive, to the order of a few months at most, but more likely a couple of weeks. Forgive me for asking an insensitive question, but is the unit combat-ready?"

"Um, Lieutenant de Lorien and I are both fit for duty, but we've just received a new transfer, and we're working on integrating her, so our unit may not be operating at full efficiency."

"That's all right. I'll be at Midchilda East Base the day after tomorrow, and- oh, would you mind if I brought along a few friends?"

"Not at all, Inspector."

"Then I'll see you soon. Goodbye."

Now what was that about? Rancer didn't really expect to hear about E-203 again, but apparently three weeks of Intelligence combing over the footage for clues had led... well, probably not nowhere, but there was nothing Rancer could add to the story that wasn't already in his report, and he was reasonably certain Ivey hadn't been holding anything back either.

The door slid open, and Nova waved cheerfully at him. "Was there anything while I was gone, Rancer?"

"Inspector Acous called," Rancer replied. "He wants to talk to me and Ivey. I'm not sure why or what he's hoping to get out of us that we haven't already given, but he's coming the day after tomorrow, with, and I quote, 'a few friends'."

"Friends?" Nova placed a finger on her chin in thought. "I wonder if he means... never mind, we'll be able to see for ourselves soon enough. Is there anything else, Rancer? I remember that you wanted to talk to me about something... and I think I had something I wanted to talk to you about... I wonder what it was?"

"Ah, yes." Rancer took out his personal organizer, and thumbed through the menu. "It's about Reiz's housing situation, ma'am. I haven't been able to find any free single rooms for her, and I'm going through the doubles, but the last room assignments I managed to get were a month old, and a lot seems to have changed since then." Rancer set the organizer to public display. "The problem I'm facing is that I'd rather not have Reiz share a room with anyone too, uh, disruptive, so Ivey is definitely out. But I'm getting a fair amount of pressure, steadily increasing ever since word got around that Reiz is with us, about getting her out of her current temporary quarters so the 344th Battalion can get it back."

"Rooms? Oh! Yes, that was it." Nova beamed. "I ran into Halley on the way back here. You know, Captain Rainier of the 8th Information Archive Retrieval?"

Rancer covered his eyes wearily. "To my unending misfortune."

"Anyway, she mentioned that her partner, May, might be open to the idea of a roommate. It seems that May is now living alone in a double that is technically assigned to us, and Halley was asking if Ivey was up for a move. Something about personalities rubbing off."

"... rubbing off?"

"I'm not sure about it myself. But wouldn't you agree that May would make a good roommate for Reiz, and vice versa?"

Rancer tried to piece together what he knew of Second Lieutenant May Shelby. "Ma'am, I would postulate that it isn't so much that May is open to the idea of a roommate, but more that it matters not to her whether or not she has one. I doubt Reiz's presence would even register."

"But May wouldn't be considered disruptive, would she?" Nova persisted.

Rancer had to concede the point. May seemed to have only one desire in life, which was to read everything she could get her hands on. Everything else, including other people and communications or presence thereof, faded into irrelevance. It was likely that she noticed the world around her, or she'd be walking into things, but she simply did not care.

"I'll talk to Reiz and May about it," he said. "In fact, I'll have Reiz meet May in the Infinite Library after lunch." He considered this. "Scratch that, make it at least a few hours after lunch."

The door opened. "Ya-hooo!" Ivey greeted, striding into the office.

"Um, good day, everyone," Reiz said shyly, trailing along behind her, keeping a respectful distance.

Rancer glared at Ivey. "Did you do anything to her?" he demanded. "In the..." Blush. "In the showers, I mean?"

"Aw, you're so cute when you're embarrassed," Ivey snickered.

"Just answer the question, Ivey."

Ivey flapped her hand in denial. "I didn't touch her, if that's what you're worried about. Heck, Reiz was trying to stay as far away from me as possible, but she was perfectly safe in there."

Reiz blinked.

Ivey put her hands on her hips authoritatively. "It's no fun if there's no challenge!" she declared. "So the safer she seems to be, the more danger she's actually in!"

Reiz squeaked, and hugged her chest.

"Ivey," Rancer sighed, "you are a strange, strange woman."

It still came out well though

Nice combat action on Reiz' part, with quite the tricks for Impulse there... too bad Ivey's just much better And as always, nice interactions, and though they're no-show, nice to hear about Halley and May again

Sidenote: Listening to "Exercise" and "Unknown" from the Gundam 00 OST back to back really sets the mood for the first half of this fic

Now, if I'm completely incorrect, and the Infinite Library does not work this way, then I'm done. This is the absolute basic foundation on which my story is set, and if it isn't possible, then there will be no more story.

Not totally gone, I'd say. But with what we've been shown in MGLN so far, I doubt the TSAB will have personnel working in one dimension and living in another. Right now, that's my only problem with your story.

I'm assuming that the transporter thing is what they use to go from Midchilda to Main HQ, and that's what I meant by "specialized entryway", as opposed to a regular door.

I don't know how they go from Midchilda to Main HQ. For all I know they could issue everyone ruby slippers to tap three times.

I'm working on the assumption that the TSAB is sticking the entryways into Library-space, since they're the ones who defined it in the first place.

That's the thing I'm assuming for the Infinite Library: that there is no way into it other than to "teleport" there.

Again with my assumptions: the Infinite Library is not some faraway place, the way Alpha Centauri is to Sol. It is technically right here, but "elsewhere", in that it is a different dimension. To go from one room to another, you step through a door, and to get from "real" TSAB-space to Library-space, you step through another sort of door.

The TSAB uses certain restricted spells which can create new entryways into Library-space wherever they choose, but this is not easy to do. Since they can put it anywhere, I figure that there would be one entrance in every major TSAB installation.

Now, if anyone else wants to use a spell to do the same, they can try, but everyone's going to know. It's like a room with, say, one doorway: you can call in renovators to build another doorway anywhere you want (even on the floor or ceiling, for basement/attic access), but it's going to be noisy and obvious.

The future thing is part of the concept I used for the Infinite Library, which is Borges's Library of Babel and a bit of Lucien's library in the Sandman comics: Library-space, without constraints, is the total of every book and piece of information that could conceivably have existed. This, to me, implies that future books would necessarily fall into its purview (I could have written a book by now, but I have not, but I might still be writing that book in the future, or someone else might have the same idea I had).

But it is impossible for humans to comprehend all this, and so current TSAB-discovered Library-space consists of a very small and tiny fraction of all these books. Insanely complicated barriers are put in place to prevent the rest of Library-space's natural reality from breaking through, and maintain a version of reality which will not drive any human in it stark raving mad.

Now, if someone were to try breaking these barriers, they would first have to contend with, well, the barriers themselves. Then they would have to try to find the one piece of information they're looking for out of all the ones out there, including the ones which may have been written, but will never be if another piece is taken out. And then they have to try to return to "normal" space.

If anyone tried breaking those barriers, all the librarians would soon know, and that person will probably not be able to make it back to face punishment in the first place.

And my assumption is that personnel will be working in one dimension and living in another, because the dimension the Infinite Library resides in (in the same way water resides in the ocean) is not the same as Main HQ, not the same as Midchilda, not the same as Earth, and definitely not a place to live in. Divers work underwater, but they don't live there.


You will notice a lot of "assume" and "assumptions". This is because I've tried to discern from canon how the Infinite Library works, and have gotten nothing which contradicts the above, but nothing that confirms them either. I've also asked several times in this thread (and I think the Magic and Tech thread), and gotten no definite canon contradictions either.

But I still have no confirmation that there is absolutely no contradiction, and that makes me nervous.

EDIT: As for why Halley and May are living in East Base, that's because the 8th IAR, which is just the two of them, is the IAR unit (ie librarians) assigned to East Base. Halley and May take care of all the requests for info from the Infinite Library which comes from personnel stationed at East Base, and since they can access the Infinite Library as easily from East Base as from Main HQ (under my assumptions), that's the logical place they'll be staying in.

Three-quarters of the 37th Criminal Investigation And Apprehension unit were gathered at the training ground Home Point, where they had an impressive view of a small cluster of commercial mid-rise buildings materialize from thin air, or at least what passed for thin air from this distance. One building in particular rose above the rest, gleaming in the morning sunlight.

"Your goal will be to infiltrate that tall building, taking care to keep from unnecessarily damaging the infrastructure along the way, retrieve the objective on the top floor, and apprehend the target alive," Rancer said. "There will be enemy drones along the way, and you may take them out at your leisure, but you do not need to defeat all of them to proceed. There will be no time limit, but the longer you take, the more likely it is that the situation may change." He shot a glance at the building in question. "Meaning that Ivey might get bored, and start improvising."

"Training limiters have been placed on all participants in this exercise," Nova said, tapping breezily on the console,"but there will be no limit on cartridge use. Take as long as you'd like to get ready, and then we'll begin."

Reiz extended a hand, palm up. On it was a small object the size and approximate shape of a stubby pencil, attached to a chain necklace. "Impulse," Reiz commanded, "set up!"

Rancer nodded. "Good luck."

Reiz clutched her quarterstaff Device, gave him a small bow, and then took a running start before launching herself into the air.

"She's going high," Nova observed. "She's making good time to the target building, even without a flight speed booster spell."

"Probably wanted to get a look around first," Rancer said. "Pardon me, ma'am." He reached over to hit a button, and another screen popped up. "The first of the drones should be closing in on her... now."

Reiz didn't even slow down, as she swung her staff like a bat, and slammed it into the drone's shield, smashing through easily. Two more drones approached her; she rammed one with the butt end of her Device, throwing up a shield to block the shots of the other. Impulse ejected a cartridge shell, and flames erupted from its ends.

"Is it me," Rancer said, as the carnage continued on the screen, "or does it seem odd that Reiz has a Device like Impulse? Is it a personal Device, did she inherit it, or something else I'm missing?"

Nova pulled up another screen. "Well, it is registered to her name, and there were no irregularities found regarding it, but Devices generally don't have a lot of paperwork attached to them. Is there a problem?"

"No, it's nothing, ma'am. Idle curiosity."

Reiz faced the larger, sturdier drones now, and was fending them off with what appeared to be a shield spread across an entire flank. Impulse ate another cartridge as Reiz shouted "Firewall!"

"Mana conversion affinity for fire," Nova noted.

Rancer scratched his chin. "A lot stronger than Ivey's own affinity for ice."

A globe of fire hung in the skies, before suddenly exploding in a wave of smoke. The drones were only singed at most, but their retaliatory beams cut through the smoke without striking anything.

"There she is," Rancer said, pointing. Reiz had simply dropped out of the cloud of smoke she had created as a distraction, and was now just entering the target building, through the front door. A couple of smaller drones attempted to follow, but were destroyed by a gout of flame.

"Switching to indoor observation," Nova said. The screens flickered briefly with static before changing over. "That's odd. There shouldn't be any interference at this range..."

Inside, Reiz had smashed open the elevator doors, checked that the elevator was below her in the basement, and fired a tiny but brilliant point of light upwards, illuminating the shaft. With a cry of "Rocketstream!" she sped upwards, a trail of smoke marking her path.

"The smoke's clearing up a lot quicker than I expected," Rancer noted. "I wonder if that means..."

Reiz reached the top floor, and pried open the doors with Impulse. The retrieval objective, a small black box, stood in the center of a field of debris, apparently unguarded.

Rancer sighed. "I recognize this one."

Nova, frowning: "I didn't expect Ivey to cause such a mess. I suppose this doesn't count against Reiz, but I don't see... oh."

"Exactly, ma'am: Ivey's set up a trap. That's her Dispersion Field causing all the interference, and notice how Reiz's flames aren't as large due to the magical disruption. It's not enough to slow Reiz down, but the temperature in there's dropped significantly, and that has to be distracting, at the least. And that's not all..."

Reiz approached the box slowly, looking around warily for traps.

"Boo," Ivey said.

Reiz spun around, and Ivey would have lost her head if she hadn't ducked in time. "I'll be your dimensional fugitive for today," she sang, swinging her chain Device Mistral lazily. "Catch me if you can."

Reiz took a step backwards instead. "Firewall!"

"Now, that's not very effective," Ivey chided, as the immolating divide shot up between them. "You can't escape with just the- WHOA!" She snapped Mistral forward to deflect a sizeable fireball that shot out of the barrier, and dodged to the side as it was rapidly followed by a flame-wreathed staff strike. Reiz emerged as the Firewall dissipated, her breath clouding in the chilled air, laying onto Ivey's defenses like an enraged ifrit, illuminated by the incandescance of Impulse's ends, as two more empty cartridge shells were spat out onto the floor.

"Remember," Ivey grunted, desperately blocking every attack with Mistral's rapidly-diminishing length, broken links scattering with every hit, "that- ungh! That you're supposed to- ergh, capture me alive." She ducked, and touched the floor. "Crystal Patch!"

A sheet of ice appeared beneath Reiz, and she stumbled and fell as her boots unexpectedly lost traction. Ivey springboarded off the wall behind her, somersaulted over Reiz's head, snaked Mistral out, and snagged Reiz's staff out of her hands. "Hah!"

Reiz held out a hand, and Impulse reappeared in it with a flash of flame.

"Oh."

Reiz didn't bother getting back to her feet, but slid forward on her knees, gaining speed. She brought her staff forward, planted it firmly on the ground, and vaulted forward with a solid fiery kick on Ivey that broke through Ivey's hasty barrier and sent her flying. Ivey let out a grunt as she impacted against the wall, and looked up to see Reiz level Impulse at her face, the heat waves distorting the air around them.

"Um," Reiz said quietly. "You are, uh, under arrest. Surrender, please?"

Ivey managed a half-grin, as sweat dripped down her face. "Do I get to say a couple of last words before I go?"

"What?"

"Mistral Cage!"

Reiz swatted away a blurred projectile, but more were coming, every severed and broken link from Mistral's chain, loosed in the fight and before when Ivey had seeded the area, converging on her, connections forming and strengthening before she could free herself from them. Impulse clattered to the floor, followed by Reiz, now completely wrapped in a cocoon of diamond-hard chains of ice.

"Mmf!" she whimpered, muffled.

"You and me, kid," Ivey muttered, still slumped against the wall, exhausted.

Rancer, now in his barrier jacket, floated up outside the windows. Finding no obvious means of entry, he drew a fist back and shattered a pane with a shielded punch. "The exercise is over," he announced, stepping carefully through the broken shards of glass. He nudged the objective box to the side with his foot. "You did very well, Reiz."

"You're good," Ivey agreed. "Really good."

"Mmf," Reiz opined.

"We'll review the video later, to point out areas to improve upon, but overall, I'd say that I can't find much fault with your tactics or skill. At least, nothing that can't be corrected with what we like to call on the job training, the bitter humour of which I am sure you will discover soon enough."

"Mmf?"

Rancer sighed. "Ivey, would you kindly remove the chains? I don't think that's very comfortable for Reiz, and she did just have a busy morning."

"Aw, do I have to?" Ivey whined. "She's all nice and wrapped up like a present! It's like cutie takeout!"

"Mmf!?"

"Ivey..."

"Oh, all right."

Nova had apologetically disappeared on a mysterious errand, and so Rancer was left minding the office while waiting for the other two ladies to finish showering and cleaning up after the exercise.

A flashing light on the desktop comm device indicated an incoming call, voice only, and Rancer patched it through. "37th Criminal Investigation And Apprehension, Captain LaSalle here. How may I help you?"

"Hello, Captain. It's been a long time since we last talked, hasn't it?"

Rancer stared blankly at the comm, before memory flipped a card. "Inspector Acous! It's good to hear from you." Well, not always, since the inspector usually had some request or new information which invariably meant more work for the unit, but at least he was polite about it.

"Well, I've been out of contact for a while, but that's another matter. Anyway, I've just received a copy of the report on site E-203, and I'd like to interview you and Lieutenant de Lorien in person, whenever you're available."

Huh? "Uh, that would be fine, Inspector. If I may ask, though, is it an urgent matter?"

A silvery laugh. "I'm not too sure myself, to be honest, but I would guess that it is rather time-sensitive, to the order of a few months at most, but more likely a couple of weeks. Forgive me for asking an insensitive question, but is the unit combat-ready?"

"Um, Lieutenant de Lorien and I are both fit for duty, but we've just received a new transfer, and we're working on integrating her, so our unit may not be operating at full efficiency."

"That's all right. I'll be at Midchilda East Base the day after tomorrow, and- oh, would you mind if I brought along a few friends?"

"Not at all, Inspector."

"Then I'll see you soon. Goodbye."

Now what was that about? Rancer didn't really expect to hear about E-203 again, but apparently three weeks of Intelligence combing over the footage for clues had led... well, probably not nowhere, but there was nothing Rancer could add to the story that wasn't already in his report, and he was reasonably certain Ivey hadn't been holding anything back either.

The door slid open, and Nova waved cheerfully at him. "Was there anything while I was gone, Rancer?"

"Inspector Acous called," Rancer replied. "He wants to talk to me and Ivey. I'm not sure why or what he's hoping to get out of us that we haven't already given, but he's coming the day after tomorrow, with, and I quote, 'a few friends'."

"Friends?" Nova placed a finger on her chin in thought. "I wonder if he means... never mind, we'll be able to see for ourselves soon enough. Is there anything else, Rancer? I remember that you wanted to talk to me about something... and I think I had something I wanted to talk to you about... I wonder what it was?"

"Ah, yes." Rancer took out his personal organizer, and thumbed through the menu. "It's about Reiz's housing situation, ma'am. I haven't been able to find any free single rooms for her, and I'm going through the doubles, but the last room assignments I managed to get were a month old, and a lot seems to have changed since then." Rancer set the organizer to public display. "The problem I'm facing is that I'd rather not have Reiz share a room with anyone too, uh, disruptive, so Ivey is definitely out. But I'm getting a fair amount of pressure, steadily increasing ever since word got around that Reiz is with us, about getting her out of her current temporary quarters so the 344th Battalion can get it back."

"Rooms? Oh! Yes, that was it." Nova beamed. "I ran into Halley on the way back here. You know, Captain Rainier of the 8th Information Archive Retrieval?"

Rancer covered his eyes wearily. "To my unending misfortune."

"Anyway, she mentioned that her partner, May, might be open to the idea of a roommate. It seems that May is now living alone in a double that is technically assigned to us, and Halley was asking if Ivey was up for a move. Something about personalities rubbing off."

"... rubbing off?"

"I'm not sure about it myself. But wouldn't you agree that May would make a good roommate for Reiz, and vice versa?"

Rancer tried to piece together what he knew of Second Lieutenant May Shelby. "Ma'am, I would postulate that it isn't so much that May is open to the idea of a roommate, but more that it matters not to her whether or not she has one. I doubt Reiz's presence would even register."

"But May wouldn't be considered disruptive, would she?" Nova persisted.

Rancer had to concede the point. May seemed to have only one desire in life, which was to read everything she could get her hands on. Everything else, including other people and communications or presence thereof, faded into irrelevance. It was likely that she noticed the world around her, or she'd be walking into things, but she simply did not care.

"I'll talk to Reiz and May about it," he said. "In fact, I'll have Reiz meet May in the Infinite Library after lunch." He considered this. "Scratch that, make it at least a few hours after lunch."

The door opened. "Ya-hooo!" Ivey greeted, striding into the office.

"Um, good day, everyone," Reiz said shyly, trailing along behind her, keeping a respectful distance.

Rancer glared at Ivey. "Did you do anything to her?" he demanded. "In the..." Blush. "In the showers, I mean?"

"Aw, you're so cute when you're embarrassed," Ivey snickered.

"Just answer the question, Ivey."

Ivey flapped her hand in denial. "I didn't touch her, if that's what you're worried about. Heck, Reiz was trying to stay as far away from me as possible, but she was perfectly safe in there."

Reiz blinked.

Ivey put her hands on her hips authoritatively. "It's no fun if there's no challenge!" she declared. "So the safer she seems to be, the more danger she's actually in!"

"Go go go!"

The young girl at the head of the 4 young women in t-shirts, cargo pants and body armor stacked up at the door entrance carefully opened the door and threw a flashbang in; the non-lethal grenade detonated in a flash of light and a roar of thunder, blinding and deafening the terrorists in the room. She kicked the door open and stormed in towards her sector, taking point. A terrorist appeared in her view, behind a couch and a hostage: she fired her .45 pistol, two rounds stitching the target's face. In her sector she saw another terrorist and his partner and opened fire, double tapping both of them in the head, as she advanced to the end corner of the small room. Reaching the corner, she turned left and spotted another terrorist, and fired her last round, performing a smooth combat reload.

Then there was silence, punctuated by a series of shouts: "Clear!" "Clear!" "Clear!"

"CLEAR!" she yelled, a little too loudly, and one of the hostages turned around from where he was sitting on the couch.

"I think we got the message, Private," said 2nd Lieutenant Franz Jaeger dryly, making a notation on his clipboard and looking at the holes in the cardboard targets representing terrorists.

"Five seconds. No injuries to the hostages as well. Good job, Lance Flight. Lieutenant Nailo, my compliments to you and your team." He cocked his head to the side, smiled, and said, "Lieutenant Nailo wishes to congratulate you on your performance, and thanks you for not screwing up in front of General O'Neil. Drinks on her after quittin' time. Hostages, say thank you to the nice ladies for rescuing us."

"Thank you, nice ladies," chorused Alpha Squad, following their leader.

Franz led his squad out of the room and waved goodbye to Lance Flight, as Emili made her way from the observation room to the killing room.

"Alright girls, good job," she said. "Let's debrief."

"I gotta check my arm first," muttered the Lance Flight 2IC, as she pulled her hand away from her arm. It was stained red with her blood.

Emili's expression changed from pleased to hard and cold, her expression dangerous. "Get yourself cleaned up. Then we redo the excercise all over again. Someone fucked up. And when I find out who did it, I will have their ass."

The expression on her sister and leader's face terrified Naomi.

Senior Leaders Office

When Emili didn't show up immediately after the excercise, Franz commed her, and learned about the incident. Now he sat and leaned back at his desk, his eyes tracking the data on his holoscreen, seeing yet unseeing, remembering something years past...

"Hit them with a plasma grenade! Hurry!"

"Fuck, Jackass, watch where you're throwing that thing!

"Damnit, I'm too beautiful to die!"

"Is something wrong, Sir?" asked the Master Chief.

"Just caught up in memories, Chief," replied Franz thoughtfully. "Have you ever fucked up a mission, before joining us?"

"I don't recall so," said the Master Chief slowly. "We were always able to accomplish our missions. Why, Sir?"

"Nah, it's nothin', Master Chief. Just that I have a feeling Naomi's going through her 200th hour right now. And I was thinking of mine, all those years ago..."

"We start from the beginning," ordered Emili, her expression stern. "Stack up. Alright. Lance 2, you're the point. Walk through."

The 3 women and 1 12-year-old girl nodded, and Naomi mimed throwing a flashbang into the room, before entering and walking her way through the room. Behind her, the rest of Lance flight did the same, carefully retracing their steps and their actions.

Naomi moved forward, counting off her steps. "One, two," she said, pointing her finger at her first target, counting off her shots, moving to her next target. "Three, four." Step. "Five, six." Walk to the corner, turn left. "Seven." She looked through the hole in the target, then looked up, and swallowed, trembling.

She was perfectly in line with Lance 4.

"I-it w-was my round," she choked out fearfully, and Emili turned a hard look on her.

"Repeat that, Private."

"L-lieutenant, Ma'am, it was m-my round that hit Lance 4."

"Alright. What did you do wrong?"

"I fired without confirming my target," said Naomi bleakly. "I saw the target and everything sort of vanished, I didn't see 4, I saw just the target and went for it-"

"You saw the 'target and went for it.' You were tunnelling," said Lance 4. "Tunnel vision will get you killed for real. And you weren't paying attention either. You were out of position." The 2IC's voice was dark and bleak.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry won't put you back in position. Sorry won't take your bullet back. Sorry won't heal my arm."

Naomi gulped, and prepared to meet her doom. She was pretty sure she was going to die.

For some reason, she felt oddly regretful that she hadn't finished baking that starfish-shaped bread yet...

3 hours later, Naomi wasn't sure if she'd rather be dead.

Emili had been called away on administrative details, with the result that Lance 4, the second in command, was in charge of correcting Naomi's deficiencies in training. Lance 4 had decided that the best way to do that was to go to the outdoor range and have Naomi keep on firing and firing.

"No magic. No aiming aids. No aimbots. No HUD. Just iron sights. Oh, and if it isn't a headshot, it doesn't count."

And so she had spent 3 hours under the hot sun, firing away like .45ACP ammo was going out of style, pumping in round after round after round into paper targets, firing until her hand was sore and red. It hadn't helped that her aim was being thrown off by the stiff breeze.

"Okay, time out," called Lance 3, as Naomi paused to reload, relieved to have a break. "Come over here girl, and take five."

Naomi staggered over to where 3 and 5 were sitting under a tree, and 5 tossed an MRE packet at her; she fumbled the catch but managed to hold on to the food packet, gratefully sitting down and tearing it open. "Uh, thanks."

"Don't be shy," grinned 5. "Range time always makes me hungry. So, how ya feelin'?"

"I wish I could die right now."

"Aw, don't feel too bad," said 3. "This kinda stuff happens all the time. At least you didn't shoot her in the bust. That would REALLY get you in trouble."

Naomi whimpered and reflexsively placed a protective hand across her not-quite-developing-still-growing-slowly bust, then yelped as 3 reached out and grabbed her chest. "Wh-wh-wh-"

"Aw, you're cute when you're flustered," grinned 3. "Really really cute..."

"I bet you'll grow up to have a nice large set," murmured another voice playfully in her ear, and Naomi started as another Air Wing mage grabbed her from behind, snuggling up to her.

"Aw, let 'er go Leena, you're freaking her out," deadpanned 5, and Leena Tokarev merely laughed.

"But she's so so cute! This innocent face! That youthful beauty! Naomi-chan, I desire your burning heart!"

"...well, at least you're honest."

* * * * *

Attempts at lesbian seduction aside (which were laughed off by everyone else: Leena Tokarev was an indiscriminate over the top worshipper of the female form), lunch was soothing to Naomi, giving her a chance to relax a bit and forget her cares. Her flightmates had been encouraging, and had told her to hand in there and chin up.

More practically, they'd given her a shooting glove to help her shoot far more comfortably.

The rest of the afternoon became one long session of shooting again and again and again, until out of nowhere Lance 4 ordered her to stop shooting, pick up her targets, police her brass, and get her ass back over to the training room. Naomi was shocked to see that another 4 hours had gone by so fast, and her right hand was trembling uncontrollably as she pulled her glove off and looked with dismay at her blistered hand. It took several attempts to take down her paper targets, and while it hurt to hold them in her hand, she felt a small measure of pride that at least most of her shots were headshots.

Leena had given her a wicked grin at one of her shots. It had gone low. Very low. In fact, on a man, that shot would be in a very painful and sensitive place. Naomi had given up on trying to explain to the green-haired lesbian that it was just a stray round, not an indicator of sexual preferences. Besides, she was only twelve!

It was with a heavy heart that she headed back to the training room where the rest of her flight were gathered, with Emili in tow... but they were all surprisingly cheerful, with none of the doom and gloom she was expecting.

"Well, it looks like you survived," smiled Emili, as her apprentice entered. "I guess I owe you a story then."

Naomi blinked in confusion. "Huh?"

"Remember what I told you before we assaulted the Exeter? I'd tell you what my 200th hour was, if you survived yours. Spare parts, shot up."

"...huh?"

"What the LT means, kid," said Lance 4, looking amused, "Is that you've passed your 200th hour. The 200th hour can be both literal or symbolic... but it's basically the time when you get overconfident and do something you're not capable up, and thus fuck up. Everyone has one. The Colonel's was getting into a fight with that Enforcer, Spectrum 3. Mine was when I first hit AMF. Lead... I'll let you tell her that one."

"Thanks," grinned Emili. "So, before we run through the raid one more time, anything you want to say, Naomi?"

"Yeah," said the girl, screwing up her courage and looking at Lance 4. "You were out of position. If you'd stayed in position, I wouldn't have hit you."

"Sorry," said Lance 4, smiling slightly.

"Sorry won't put you back in position."

"I mean about all that stuff I put you through today. Go put some cream on your hand, and then we'll run the room again. Let's get it right this time, girls!"

"Beat 5 seconds and drinks are on me," grinned Emili. "Now beat that time and Franz's time!"

"Well, you look ready to crash right here and now, Naomi," said Franz that evening, as his tired sister entered the office he shared with Ivanovich and the Master Chief. "Ready to go home?"

She nodded tiredly at him, dragging her duffel bag on the floor, and Franz grabbed his own duffel and shut down his computer and killed the lights, undoing a couple of buttons of his fatigues. He held the door open for her, and on a whim, reached out and took her hand as they walked to the elevator. Naomi leaned into him as they stepped into the elevator and rode down towards the parking garage, both of them in companioble silence until they were almost home. Then she spoke.

"Bruder?"

"Da?"

"What was your 200th hour like?"

"Oh, man," said Franz, shaking his head. "It was... well, it's both sad and embarrassing."

"What happened?"

"...long story cut short, this was about 13 years ago. One of my early missions with Bravo Squad and the Order. So bad guys are comin' towards us, we're in this big ditch, and Ivanovich goes, "Plasma grenade, NOW!" And so I prime a plasma grenade, and throw it... and I let go too late and it sticks to the wall of the ditch, about a couple of inches in front of the Sergeant Major's knee. All of us curse and run like hell as it blows, and only just make it outta the ditch before it's awash in plasma. And then the bad guys can see us and we're no longer in good cover and so we gotta run like hell yet again, fire and manuver..."

As he pulled into their parking space, Franz smiled as he took in the sight of an exhausted Naomi, asleep in her seat, and gently unbuckled her and picked her up piggyback. Forgoing the elevator, he murmured "Burst Jump" and leapt to their apartment balcony. A quick jimmying of the window and he was inside the house, carrying her to her room, setting her down on her bed, lips twitching slightly when she mumbled "I love you, Bruder," in her sleep. He stood there in the doorway, gazing upon her face, feeling proud and yet strangely sad at the same time, sighed and stepped back into the room and kissed her on the forehead and tucked his sister in, wanting to say it, yet unable to verbalise his feelings for her.

Then he jumped off the balcony, landed next to the car, grabbed their bags, and jumped back up.

Well, it's done. Worked on it through the night, through fatigue and bleary eyes. Not my best

work, at least to me. *sighs*
God, 3.05 AM here. I was wanting to get it done before midnight. Gotta get up in 3 hours too -_-

Explanations: O'Neil is making an inspection, Lance was doing a hostage rescue demo. Master Chief - two interpretations. One: he's so badass he never had a 200th hour. Two: He's had it and he doesn't know he's had it.

Argh...I think I've forgotten how it feels to be drowned in backlog. Now that I am, I'm not sure how to handle it. Though to be honest more than half of the posts for the past 2 days weren't really relevant to my interest.

Only thing of note lately is the fiasco you-know-where. And even after a new beginning, I suddenly see you-know-who whining and been a jerk (as usual) because he wasn't getting his brand of coffee.

Lots of things to catch up. I didn't go through the thread much on weekends because they mean so much to me now. I tend to just spend my weekends now gaming and stuff. Have to go through Kagerou, dkellis, and Wild Goose's recent works. Will try to read them up soon and comment, if i don't get swamped by work that is.

Yeah, Hayate is a bombardment specialist/commander, but if I was in her shoes, you bet your ass I'd take some kind of close-combat training. She's carrying a STAFF, it has SWORD in its name; at the least she could defend herself while calling for help or something simple.

Course, this is coming from the person whose OC has no ranged combat skill at all, so...

Yeah, the Grade Project was even called "cursed" once. Lots of drama plagued it since the Grade's introduction. And I didn't even count how many test pilots got killed by the prototype Grade Stahlmut due to it's instability and tendency to overload the pilot's Linker Core with mana. Kha's Reactive ability to read the Stahlmut's energy fluxes made him the only pilot able to take the crushing accelerations, as well as to control and maximize it's potential.

Basically, it's cos I see a pattern of Belka+Midchilda config of forwards in the Squads. While I can fill that spot with Setsuna F Seiei, I'd thot I'd give it to another Midchilda OC.

Well some of the concepts are taken from Online Games- FSZ recognizes them.

Some of them are taken from my private crack factory and some i buy from "suppliers"- I'm like a factory ship- self fishing though- so the product is of quality, even though the sources are from various areas.

Crack is Crack when produced, no matter where the raw materials came from, no matter where it is produced, and you get caught by the crack you produce.

I know I haven't actually been very good at replying to all the feedback on my chapters, but rest assured that everything is being read and treasured. So treasured, in fact, that I'm actually copy-and-pasting them into a text file and re-reading them whenever I'm stuck on the next scene, to reassure myself that OMG SOMEONE IS ACTUALLY READING MY STUFF.

I didn't actually know that the 200th hour is an actual phenomenon with a name, other than the vague "sooner or later, there will be a screwup". Applied to the 37th, Ivey and Rancer have had theirs (not especially important to the story, but I might put it in for extra character development), Reiz is too new (and I'm not likely to chronicle hers when it happens, since it will pretty much be Insert Angst Here), and Nova never had one, and is unlikely to ever have a serious one, being, yanno, desk job.

Well, unless you count "getting pwned by Precia" as her 200th hour. It wasn't exactly her fault, mind.

That's why in Joint Training, Franz will suggest to Hayate that she get a gun. And then receive looks of great horror and shock (except from Fate, who's seen him and Order mages with guns before). Still, to borrow an example, artillery guns or MRLS don't have close combat forms...

Such things, sadly, have happened in training accidents. SEAL Team Six's first casualty was a guy who'd been accidentally shot in the back by his shooting buddy, for instance.

Mikhail... looking for his profile. His background is that of military intelligence, though he was an MP in the Erusian military before he joined the TSAB. He has some basic crime scene experience but he's better at interrogation and sniffing out loose threads.

And like all OFM members, mages or not, he's a good shot with the MA5C rifle.

I'm actually considering a different weapon, the MA5D. It's basically the MA5C but with a 40-round mag, and the ammo display shows a computerised optical sight like the FN F2000, so it's a red dot sight with a mini-hud compass and ammo counter. You can also remove the intergrated optics to replace them with an ACOG scope.

...It would also appear that now the lastest new thing here is OCs going through their 200th hours...
