This time Elias was the damsel in distress. Nice to see the role reversed.
Ashen Eye is really creepy (Jouji Nakata is doing such a great job voicing him). Hard to tell if he was serious or if he was toying with them as Chise surmised. He seemed pretty damn serious to me, but he did give Chise a pretty big hint to help her win the game. In any case it's rather worrisome that even Elias is powerless against him.

Has Chise adopted a bear form before? Neither my friend with whom I watch this nor I can remember a scene where she becomes a bear. I only remember her as a beautiful fox and, of course, the phoenix. I don't remember seeing her as a bear.

That was indeed her first time transforming into a bear. I was surprised since I logically thought the fox hide could only turn her into a fox. I'm guessing she can turn into other animals too.

Here's my recap and review. As for the bear explanation, it's in the next manga chapter after the one this was adapted off of (chapter 29) that Elias tells her about it. It should be explained in the next episode, but if they don't give that information then I'll put up another summary.

This was my favorite episode of the series so far.
A couple of days ago, the latest Natsume Yuujinchou OVA came out, and so as the episode started, I found myself thinking it would be fun if Chise & co. could go to Japan and meet up with Natsume and Nyanko-sensei. Then Elias made himself look sort of like Chise when he and Ethan were trapped, and it reminded me that the only human forms Nyanko-sensei can take are Natsume and Reiko. Stella and Ethan were great - but then, I have a niece and nephew who are about those ages, so maybe I'm biased. |

Well, I thought episode 18 would be one with a lot of joy since Chise made a new friend (Stella). However, the mood went sour once I saw Cartaphilus return. Seems trouble always comes along whenever Cartaphilus shows up...
On the other hand, I'm really glad this episode gave Ruth a chance to help Chise. Plus, Chise and Elias still share a close relationship even up to this point in this series.

The episode showed that despite all the developments between Chise and Elias, both of them are still inexperienced and filled with doubts about themselves, in this case Elias was the one that's more affected by that. At the same time this shows how their own relationship is really close and that they can't live without the other anymore, of course this doesn't apply just to them but for Silkie and Ruth too.
Joseph is causing trouble again, this time messing with Lindel and the dragons which is probably going to lead to another tragedy. The preview is basically hinting that something terrible is about to happen. |

It was said numerous times throughout the series, but I had never fully realized just how much of a child Elias is until now. Dude got madly jealous of a little girl. His tamper tantrums are a big issue, given how powerful he is.
Really liked the scene with Chise and Angelica's husband. He did something to Stella as well, and he appears to be working with Ashen Eye. I have no idea what he's planning this time, but it obviously isn't anything good.

Sorry for being late with the review and recap.
Now I promised I'd explain the whole thing with the pelt if they didn't, so here's some details they left out: Spoiler for missing information:

This was incredibly sad, honestly, is evident the pain and the feelings, the fear and desperation. Chise managed to connect with all of that, for now I have no idea how she's going to handle this situation, mainly beacause I believe this is going to take a different path (not the same as the manga).

Somehow, Elias seemed really evil in that new form of his. Part of it is most likely because he could actually emote, but the things he said were rather ominous.
I felt bad for the poor Dragon, and hope this arc will have a nice resolution. Chise's "dream" about Joseph was rather intriguing. Seemed like he had a split personality.

Felt like the episode dragged on a bit but otherwise it was interesting. Joseph is probably the only antagonist in this story that actually makes you concerned for what will happen so it's good that he's back in this story.
Really horrible to see the dragon treated that way but it really frustrates me how there still doesn't seem to be any judgement imposed on those profit on this sort of thing. I noted earlier how the story seemed to give that slave trader a pass and it felt like they did the same thing this episode too.
