I just want to say that thanks to this thread I found out about Higurashi no Naku Koroni. I am not too fond of the character designs, it's still not that creepy (I have only watched two episodes) but it has been very interesting.

Yami to Boushi

Not really a mindfuck but very surreal and kinda creepy at times.. makes you want to think even though the basic plot is fairly simple.

Jumping off on the Lain tangent...

Texhnolyze (spelling) - its a mindfuck like Lain with very creepy imagery especially towards the end. Licensed tho..
