Is his name spelled with a hyphen in the original Japanese? That would be key, I think.

That was my guess, the first names are similar enough that you wouldn't have to worry about anyone slipping and saying the other one but still adds another degree of "hiding" him. And, if speculating from the summary is okay, I'm going to guess that the reason he looks so grumpy is that half of the time it had to do with him being placed with the "commoners" instead of the "nobles", must be a bit galling if you're a former prince.

I wonder if the main bad guy is going to be called Lex Tom.

Not that it's terribly important, but all names for Pilot's Love Song were approved by the licensors, and half of them (Including Kal-el) came from the licensor directly.

I would never randomly name a character after superman. That would be a stupid and immature thing to do.

Incidentally, Karl and Kal-el are both correct.

Thanks,

Can someone PM me and tell me the relevance of the princess? I'm stuck at the movie.

OK I just watched the first episode and I must say that having Last Exile popup almost immediately in my mind can only mean good things. They are at least doing something right to remind me of that show. One thing wasn't perfect though and that was the main character sister Ariel. The way both of them kept fighting in such over the top way is a potential sore spot in the show if it ends up being overplayed but I'll give the show the benefit of the doubt for now. Overall I'm sticking with this one I think. The few small hints the show dropped on the first episode seem to point to a story with some darkness to it (all the revenge hints) so I'm guessing it'll end up interesting at least.

Late to the show, but finally got to it.

Everybody's bothered by Superman being in the show, but is it bad my WWII planes knowledge is showing when I recognized that the enemy planes at the start were based off the Messerschmidt BF-109's from Germany? They kept some of the decal schemes as well. The yellow wingtips and the crosses on the wings. They rotated them in the show to be X's, but they're the iron cross on the actual planes. Sounds like 20 mm cannons too.

The second episode was a bit slow, which kind of worries me since apparently the series is only twelve episode long. I hope they won't screw up the pace.

The major revelation this week is that Kal-el is the former prince of Balsteros, which we already knew from the synopsis. The white haired guy knows his identity for some reason. I wonder what Claire is thinking, getting so close to the person she robbed of everything... this won't end well. Well, maybe it will, but there will be a loooot of drama in-between. I can't wait until he finds out who she is.

Loved the second episode. I was feeling it was a bit slow...but then it ended before I expected it to, so perhaps not. The development of the characters and situation was both leisurely and efficient. Seems like a good combination to me.

Good voices all round, with Yuuki Aoi still just grabbing my ears and not letting go. Star quality and strong pipes. I loved the ED by Akai Kouen, and liked the OP by petit milady (Yuuki Aoi and Taketatsu Ayana). I didn't have high hopes for that combination as singers, but they did well.

I was aware of it before, but the reveal of who Kal-el is was well done, I thought. He's going to be so much in love with "Claire" by the time he finds out who she is, lol.

I find it amusing that the cast is perfectly paired up while flying although I'm disappointed they didn't show the Ariel/that lonely guy interaction.

And here I though He will fly with his sister while Clair will fly with white hair kid
(From how he attack him in his room from the op -> he must really hate him)

Not gonna beat around the bush. This show's vibe is incredibly awesome. Kinda like a steampunk feel with some late 40's architecture I dunno. Anyway I''m gonna go on another business trip and I'm not going to be back for like 4 months this time but this story is going to be bugging me. If someone can private message a breakdown on how it ends I'd greatly appreciate it, if not it's cool.

I doubt I can like that Clair girl. Watching her getting all Love dove with Karel will seriously spoil my enjoyment of this show. But of course that's just my problem for now.

Other than that I liked slower pacing this episode and I wouldn't mind even if it continued that way.

ha ha @ the end of episode 02 reveal, about karel being the former crown prince.
I didn't look at the synopsis, so it was a surprise for me. Have they gone over what nationalities are separated at? Or is it in due time.

Was going to say this Karel guy needs to know his commoner's place as a joke, but guess him matching up with Claire just matches destiny.

I guess Kar El's 'sister' was just someone he was raised with, guess maybe his mother died and he was adopted to a different family.

Episode 2 was full of hopes and dreams, and a few dark plots hinted at.
Wouldn't be surprised if a few classmates we were introduced to have a tragic accident or two, and we be losing a few characters in the future.

Don't quite understand why the nobility still exists and possess privileges over commoners on Isla. I thought the monarchy's been overthrown and everyone is theoretically "equal".

2nd Episode was indeed a bit slow, but paradoxically seemed to fly by, which is probably a positive commentary on how enjoyable and "easy viewing" it was.

So "Kal-el" is the cover name, and "Karl" is the real name. That's a neat twist.

Kal-el and Claire continue to have a very cute relationship together. The old-fashioned romantic in me really loves the way Kal-el is smoothly but sincerely charming his way into her heart, while he is clearly completely smitten by her.

The new Satomi (Valvrave reference) made a decent rival for Kal-el in this episode, but I'm hoping to see more of the new L-Elf (other Valvrave reference) next episode.

Money and lineage still talks, even when everyone is theoretically equal.

Everybody in America is theoretically equal too, but there's a reason why Ivy League schools are typically considered more prestigious than other post-secondary institutions.

Except these people seems to be given institutional privileges. The school, run by the government, evidently allows the commoners to be treated like second class citizens. It's a different matter if they are in a different school, but since they all belong to the same school treatment of the students should be standardized. You don't see rich students getting separate, better dorms in West Point or getting segregated into classes based upon your background. What's even worst is that they are supposed to be in a military academy where you are taught to obey orders only from your superiors regardless of yours superior's background or yours.By giving preferential treatment to the nobles, the school's indulging them to believe they are superior to commoners, even if that commoner happens to be his/her commander.

Well, the setup isn't good, I agree with you there. Having a clear institutionalized class divide between two groups of students attending the same classes does seem pretty counter-intuitive to me. It would make more sense to simply have them attend different classes if class divides mean this much to their society. But perhaps adequate teachers are sparse, so they have to be combined like this.

Leaving some of the overly cliche romantic stuff in the past episode this one was fairly good. Nothing too over the top between Karl and Claire. Just some solid progression with them. Give props to Karl for moving in quickly and taking care of the jerk elitist guy. Though nice of him to leave his sister on her own there . Might have told her he had someone else in mind. Probably weren't many options regardless since most people probably just stuck with the people they paired up with when they came here originally.

Something seemed a bit silly to tell these people all about the planes they just flew the other day .

I'd probably agree on the lack of adequate teachers thing. Considering the one 'adequate teacher' slept in and then spent several minutes staring at himself in front of a window....
