Provide your recommendations for anime, manga, light novels, web novels, visual novels, games, and other media within the genre: Comedy!

These should be works that you've experienced personally and would like to recommend to others. No "troll" recommendations, or non-recommendations in this thread. For longer series, you don't necessarily need to wait until the whole work is finished before recommending it, but please at least wait until you've at least experienced enough of it to make a good judgement.

Please don't just post a list! You don't need to do a full review, but for each title you suggest, please also consider providing:

A brief explanation of the setting and premise (no spoilers!)

MC, named Akihisa Yoshii, isn't just a dumbass. He's a LEGENDARY dumbass. The dumbest kid in his school, he gets a special title just so everyone knows who he is. This school uses a unique system that allows people to summon chibi-variants of themselves to fight, with strength based on test scores, while Yoshii, being the dumbest, gets special powers. A story of the underdogs taking over, to keep it short.

A brief summary of why you like it and/or why you think others might like it

Aside from the always-heartwarming underdog victory theme, this show makes use of limited fanservice, people of questionable gender, chronic abuse of the mentally injured (Read: abusing the dumbass just for shenanigans), and EPIC reference game to keep your lungs empty and your head hurting from laughter. References range from Metal Gear Solid, to Nintendo to Tenga Toppa Guren Lagann, and MANY more. Trying to find them all is like playing a game in and of itself, making the show that much better.

Both first and second season (Baka to Test to Shoukanju and Baka to Test to Shoukanju Ni!)

This show has a VERY catchy opening theme. The show loves to get out of proportion in some aspects, such as the final fight, but it's all in the aspect of comedy. If you love strategy-type action, the battle plans they come up with are funny yet effective. If there were a term for comedic jumpscares, there are quite a few of them here.

So... how are Comedies different from Romantic Comedies? According to Booker's 7 Basic Plots, they aren't, but I'll try to focus on anime that are funny here. That might lead to some overlap with Romantic Comedies.

Recommendations:

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (GSNK) is an ensemble comedy, built around Nozaki and his friends. Nozaki is a highschool student, but also an aspiring shoujo mangaka, who has recently been serialized with his traditional shoujo love story "Let's Love."

The story is told primarily from the perspective of Sakura, a girl at the highschool Nozaki attends, who has an enormous crush on Nozaki, and gains a position as one of his assistants for his manga.

A large portion of the jokes are based around playing with common shoujo tropes, subverting them, or reversing them. Many of the other characters are incorporated by Nozaki into his manga. One of the jokes is that he often gender flips them. As such, gender roles are one of the common themes that GSNK plays with.

Interestingly enough, GSNK does not have the common Love Dodecahedron that a lot of other comedies that focus on romantic misunderstandings has. Instead there are clear couples among the cast. Because of this there is very little ship conflict, nor ship hate in the fandom. Instead viewers are often cheering for all the characters in their respective romances. However, due to typical teenage awkwardness, they very slowly progress anywhere.

That's another thing about GSNK, all members of the cast are a lot of fun and get almost equal air time. While everyone has their favorites, none of the characters are particularly disliked. In addition to the main couple, there is Sakura's friend, the Lorelei of the choir club, Nozaki's friend Miko-rin and his friend Kashima the school Prince. There is also Hori, the head of the school theater club. They all play off each other extremely well, and you feel like you are present at a group of friends who are constantly cracking jokes off each other.

Despite all the romance tropes, GSNK actually focuses primarily on comedy rather than romance, with the romance at most becoming a tease. GSNK then feels free to make jokes about how they are teasing you, and how the romance never goes anywhere.

All in all, this anime was a breath of fresh air. It was light hearted and funny, and despite the age of the genre, it actually avoided the typical preverted jokes, and instead was much more of a fun parody. This may be because the anime is a shounen, making fun of shoujo tropes.

The animation is also quite pretty, with nice effects, and great character design.

I give Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun a 9 out of 10.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi is a genre busting anime, so it's very hard to categorize. However, Comedy is certainly one of the genres it busts.

Once there was a girl. A girl who realized she was insignificant in this world. A girl who decided that kind of life was boring, and so she decided to devote herself to spreading excitement all over the world - by finding aliens! time travelers! psychics! and then play with them.

Once there was a boy. A boy who dreamed of aliens, time travelers, and psychics. A boy who then grew up and realized there was no such thing, and so he began a boring life.

This boy and girl entered the same highschool. The boy sat behind the girl, and despite her being so weird, he talked to her, because she was quite the beauty. This boy accidentally gave the girl the idea of forming a club, a club dedicated to finding aliens, time travelers, and psychics. She promptly did so, dragging the boy along for the ride. Along the way she also recruited a quiet book loving girl, a moe-blob to serve as the club mascot, and a mysterious transfer student.

And they had many adventures. All narrated by the boy in his best Lemony Snicket impression.

That's about the best I can do at summarizing Haruhi Suzumiya without spoiling it.

Haruhi is also notable for being one of the major precursor anime that led to the explosion of "highschool kids form a club" anime.

The animation is great, as expected from Kyoto Animation, and Haruhi was one of the first major anime to put KyoAni on the map.

The Haruhi franchise is also infamous for trolling it's fans. For example, the first season was aired out of order, the second season was first billed as a rebroadcast of the first season, that then turned out to have new episodes inserted into the run. There was also the rage that was the endless eight arc.

There is also a movie, a movie that had amazing visuals, and a great dramatic storyline.

I give the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya a 9 out of 10.
