So basically we will get pseudo "2nd round" of battle with Gilgamesh just this time with "right end", and then normally follow manga like nothing happened. So much for how they deal with ending of Herz.

To be fair....all the Illya variants are pretty nice . Though will give a nod to Assassin Illya, with the best I think still being Saber Illya.

And yeah sounds basically like what I thought the first episode for 3rei would turn out to be. It wasn't exactly a tough problem transitioning from the ending of Herz into the start of the new arc.

All this discussion of the reconciling of the end of Zwei Herz to the beginning of Drei reminds me of the kerfluffle about the change to the end of the NGNL adaptation. Looks like they've resolved it in less than an episode in this case, and I imagine the opening teaser of the episode is all they'd need to resolve the other series' alignment.

Honestly I never thought it would take more than a portion of an episode to transition from the end of Herz to getting into Drei properly. It was a changed ending to be sure, but one that wasn't making it very difficult to continue the story.

From what I understand, they get to the mapo tofu chef, which is about where I expected them to get, once I watched the last episode of 2wei Herz and saw how they ended it. I never thought it would take long to catch up either, I was just surprised they decided to make any changes in the first place, since the ending of 2wei in the manga was a pretty awesome cliffhanger. I guess they didn't know at the time whether they'd get to adapt 3rei or not, is the only thing I can think of. Of course I'd have adapted the cliffhanger anyway. It's not like, even the way they did adapt it, they didn't leave all kinds of hanging threads, after all.

Expanding stuff most likely was done because Hiroyama asked them to(just like how they added the Auguste fight in 2wei because he asked them to) considering a lot of it hints to stuff beyond 3rei and some of the stuff is referenced within the manga.
Good grief just how big is this spin off adaptation? I thought they barely had enough material for 9 episodes. If they plan to take it all the way just how big will this franchise be?

If it's a 2-cour season, the best place to stop would probably be around chapter 30. That gives you one heck of a climax to the season, and allows you to adapt at a rate of a little bit more than a chapter an episode. If it's split-cour, they'll probably end the first half in the middle of chapter 13, which gives a good cliffhanger. There's not really anywhere after chapter 30 to stop, because we're only on chapter 42, and most everything between there and 30 is one very long (but very, very good) flashback (which still isn't quite over). You might be able to make that the first half of a split-cour "3rei Herz", but only if the remainder is just about as long. My guess? We get a split-cour 3rei adaptation, ending at chapter 30. Once the manga ends, we get another split-cour "3rei Herz" series.

It was already confirmed that current season will have 12 episodes. And regarding ending point, judging by announced full-cast list, current season will likely end somewhere between chapters 14-24. Since Julian is included in cast list, but Sakura not. Which mean that we will definitely don't go beyond chapter 25 where Sakura is introduced. On other hand Julian's appearance is little a mystery. Unless they give him anime original preliminary appearance then, they must go at least beyond chapter 14 where he has little voice cameo. In such case, this mean, that this season must at least partially include Illyabear subplot. But with that I don't really dare to say where they will end. Personally betting on another anime original ending that create own mid-stepping point, like Herz did. Probably somewhere where Illyabear will escape to attic and finds Sapphire.
