I've played only so many but I've found that when it does add to the story, it's either not too long or at least there's some inserted dialogue that reveals something about either events or the characters that you might not hear in another context.

Ero in Visual Novels is nice if
a) the point of time when, at least one, ero-scene occurs makes sense (aka the right "mood")
b) it is not rushed or blatantly bad like starts right in the middle just to have it.
c) (personal preferance) no rape-fail
That is for the more story-driven ones (as in no nukige).

I agree with this. Only a few big name companies like type moon and maybe key (eventhough i think it's debatable, because of the huge succes of Little Busters Ecstasy and marginal succes of Rewrite ) succeeded in that transition from moving away from eroge to entirely "all ages".
Like i posted earlier, Minori failed pretty hard when they decided to make an all ages VN (Supipara) and had a big hit again when they went back to an eroge (Natsuzora no Perseus)
Also let's not ignore the upcoming Da capo 3 R x rated version. While the all ages version of Da capo 3 wasn't that bad sales wise, it was not that much of a succes either

IMO most non-nukige eroges that i played are written well enough without the H-scenes as well. While there are plenty of VN's without sexual content that do well enough, you are missing out on many very good stories if you only steer away from eroges just because it has sexual content in it and the way you are viewing eroges is very shallow.

IMO if you are only going for a VN for the H-scenes, then you are probably more into nukiges

The absolute rule is that you don't have sex scenes in console ported eroges, so there's that (mostly in the PlayStation line, with PSP as the current common outlet). Sometimes these ports may have additional heroines or scenarios added to them, which in turn sometimes ported back to the PC, which may or may not be an all ages version.

I'm not sure, but I suspect the main consumer base for both versions is probably one and the same anyways, so there may be little to no "general consumers" to speak of.

I suppose you do have to play your cards right to get the scenes, but they also rarely hand out the AO rating anyways.

Depending on who the artist is eroge visuals range from excellent to terrible.

I'll play my eroges for plot and characters while fapping to H-doujins instead thank you very much



Also it's amazing how everyone instantly assumes eroge = nukige despite the massive amount of companies that make them based on plot. I suppose manga are now porno magazines because H-manga exist eh?
