Speaking of the Big Sister, the Demon King has rather unrealistic expectations of education. Within a year, the Big Sister appears to have gone from being illiterate to being able to read and write well enough for a course in logistics--while working as a maid. I have don't think I can describe this kind of progress as anything except very impressive.

Besides, between Soldier's Son and Noble's Son (or whatever their names are) there are undoubtedly enough frustrations in her class to explain her mild bout of depression.

What is even more impressive is Maou setting herself to end the vicious cycle of war by fixing the problems that kept fueling it within a year. Anyway, it's interesting Maou has thought things through. When she took up that memory lamp, it showed she had already envisioned how she was going to increase agricultural output. How does she come to know so much about farming practices? Who is she, really? I look forward to the anime revealing more of Maou, rather than simply casting her as a traveling miracle worker with modern knowledge of pollution, economics, agriculture, etc. |

Great voice work by Chiwa Saito as Head Maid this episode. Of course, we still have the same excellent voices for the mains as well. Looks like the ones in charge are trying for a more balanced approach between informative exposition and character relationships. Well, at least that's the impression I got for episode 2.
Big Sis Maid and Little Sis Maid are introduced. They chose to gain dignity, education from Demon Queen and training through Head Maid's "Path of the Maid". If DQ already has her hands full with just her first four students, it's reasonable she will eventually need additional instructors to help lighten the educator's load. I liked that explanation on Crop Rotation. Not too long, but good enough. Looks like one of agriculture's "secret weapons" will have to wait until next episode to be revealed. And someone who seemingly knows who Hero is will catch up with him as well. Well, Cyprene is CR's translator for Maoyuu.

Oh no. She merely intends to show that she can increase agricultural production within the space of a year. This would reduce the southern country's depedence on the countral country's war funds. That is only one of the many steps that is required to fix the various problems that are fueling this war. Also over that time period she is hoping to come up with another explanation for where she and the hero are, and another reasonable justification that will hold off active hostilities long enough to allow her to make more progress in following the many steps she must take.

Maou estimated that her excuse of being seriously wounded while fighting Yuusha would only fool the mazoku under her for about a year. Since the mazoku are currently at war, it would be improbable for the mazoku to sit around for too long before a new leader arises to fill the power vacuum. Then again, this is an anime, so improbable things can always happen. On the subject of increasing agricultural supply, I can see this totally backfiring on her. What if the rulers took the increased food supply from the peasants and send them to the front lines? During times of war, it is not uncommon for feudal rulers to squeeze their peasant tax base to fund their military adventures. What this means is that Maou's actions could lead to an intensification of the human war effort. A better supplied army could march further and fight longer. Then again, this is an anime, so perhaps the ruler could be totally blissfully unaware their peasants are producing much more food than in the past. |

The peasants in this world are already aware of the need for crop rotation, which they perform by leaving the parts of the field idle for a time. The Demon King's improved plan involves constant use of the fields and is supposed to work in a four year cycle. I expect that it'll take more than four years for the peasants to see themselves that the Demon King's method of field rotation does preserve the soil quality and thus come to rely on that method.
And then the Demon King is only teaching the method to one rather backward village on the frontier. It will take even longer for people in other regions to notice that this village has a better method of crop rotation and to copy the method, which further delays how long the improved results can be used to intensify war efforts. (This paragraph assumes she's not going to go around teaching all the frontier villages her new method of rotation but rather leaving the spreading to the current village)

I loving the discussion the show is generating with just a few layers of the economics laid out.
Next week, a new agent will be introduced and people will have many more things to consider when discussing Demon Queen's plan. (Not a spoiler because it's clearly shown in the PV).
