I'm not a yuri fan, but I would like to add my 2 cents.

After all, this manga is serialized in Manga Time Kirara, so it's seinen. While being on Kirara Miracle means it may be slightly more serious tone than stuff from Kirara, Kirara Caret or Kirara Max, don't expect shoujo-type yuri here.

That said, just by looking at the Yuu/ Haruka pair, I've seen the author has been trying to defy seme/uke stereotypes by having both characters having attributes of both. While Haruka seems to be the taller character and the one who's been lusting more, she's shy, clingy and aloof. On the other hand, Yuu is short, girlish and innocent, she's less passive in most other things and likes sports. So it's hard to assign who is the seme and who is the uke...

'Seme'/'Uke' roles are actually pretty uncommon in yuri, it has nowhere near the prevalence of genres like yaoi. Although there are in fact yuri-equivalent terms (Tachi for Seme and Neko for Uke) (note also that incidentally this series' mangaka's pen name happens to be Tachi, no idea if it's an intended reference though), those terms are not really used or well known except in more real-life "lesbian" oriented circles (and even then somewhat rarely).

The vast majority of yuri fiction does not place major emphasis on fixed gender roles; or rather, it might indeed be common in some of the more introspective works to see a series explicitly reject them. The main point is that in yuri you can find a much higher prevalence of relationships which begin from the premise of its two characters as equals, although I would not go so far as to say that stories with defined gender roles do not exist.

I concentrate all my attention on the yuri aspect. It was only after countless rewatching that I just now noticed the school principle has announced that the school will shut down and merge in three years. lol Do we really need to know about that? What this mean is the the main casts are the last batch of students that will be graduating from the West High. It's a shame that there will be no more kouhai and the school will become almost deserted in their third year.

There's been a fair number of anime in recent years where "Our school is going to close and/or combine with another school" has been an important (if not central) plot point.

I'm inclined to think this is a shoutout to demographic trends in real world Japan, and what it likely means for a lot of the schools there. Many anime shows like to ground themselves as much as possible in real world Japan (some even going so far as to have main settings be line-drawn copies of real world locations in Japan).

Personally, I like this approach, as it does create a bit of connection between the fictional narrative and the real world.

Well, it also means that none of the girls can risk being bad enough students that they get held back a grade. Since there won't be a grade to be held back into, they'd just end up getting kicked out instead.

Would they get kicked out because they are gay? Because that would be a bit too real.

Also I've been rewatching the yuri scenes and man they are fuwa fuwa every time I see it.

Ya know, this raises the question why the hell this was not serialized in Yuri Hime and be that magazine's flagship title instead of Yuru Yuri. It'll be very interesting to see what kind of impact this will make in the long run or if it does make any impact with the otaku landscape.

(and ookamigirl will never make a post about her episodic thoughts here....)

I liked it, it's very cute and didn't expect so many kisses but I don't mind.

I suppose it's the same thing as those josei magazines which have mangas with a lot of fujoshi pandering. I'm happy that this means there won't be shoujo-type yuri because those bore me and are the main reason I hardly read yuri.

... and are quite rare, it would be a blessing to variation if it was targeted at girls

I am totally gonna count how many kiss they do in each episode.

Also, this series is so fluffy... I think I just been converted.

Yuruyuri already made a name for itself, this is still relatively new. I guess Akari abuse and some blonde beats the ACTUAL POINT OF YOUR MAGAZINE.

People are already talking, though you better be ready for the haters if it gets bigger.

Akari? Who is this Akari? There no such character in Yuru Yuri.

Thanks for proving my point.

On a different subject, the ED lyrics are even gayer than I thought

I thought Yuru Yuri was OK, nothing too special.

I'd like to know whether people usually prefer serious yuri series or something like Sakura Trick which is a more comedic/light-hearted yuri. The shows that I've seen always end up having some sort of subtext instead of an actual relationship so Sakura Trick is my first.

I know about Sasameki Koto and Aoi Hana but that's about it for my knowledge of "yuri" shows. Like I said above, many of the shows I've seen (Azumanga, Hidamari, Kanamemo, Madoka, My-Hime, Nanoha, Saki) all have a bunch of subtext or the yuri is secondary but have no real relationships or anything.

Well, as of the third movie I don't think Madoka is subtext anymore...

I hope Sakura Trick sells a lot more than Yuru Yuri which will drive the irony even further!

My favorite anime of all time is Simoun (2006), which is science fiction with more than one yuri romantic relationship in it, and a fascinating set-up in which everyone is born a girl, but people choose their final gender in their late teens. It follows a crew of young people (all still girls) as they fight a war.

Maria-sama ga Miteru ("Marimite," 2004) is a sweet show with relationships that are a bit less intense and overtly romantic than in Simoun.

The great yuri classic of the past is Brother, Dear Brother (Japanese: Oniisama-e, 1991). I love it, too, but it is soaked in melodrama, with dark secrets and desperate acts of pain and love. "Intense" is too weak a word for it.

I've always liked Blue Drop (2007), which is good romantic yuri science fiction, involving the captain of a crashed alien spaceship and a girl on Earth.

There is also Strawberry Panic (2006), which may come closest to what's going on here, with overt yuri encounters. But it is less sweet and charming, for me. I've always thought of it as more seinen than yuri.

Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl (2006) is entertaining seinen/yuri science fiction romance.

There is a list of yuri shows in Wikipedia.

Geez, how could I forget about MariMite and Strawberry Panic? I was going off of memory but my memory isn't that good

I watched through Maria-sama Haru and I watched Panic a loooong time ago. I think Maria is much better but Panic isn't that bad.

I remember checking out the first episode of Simoun but couldn't get into it. Back then I wasn't interested in yuri so I was basing my decision on other stuff.

I'm looking for yuri in school/everyday settings so I think I'll check out Sasameki and Aoi Haru at some point. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
