Sounds like the making of an anime if you ask me. I can see it now it would be like HACKERS but with Otakus and instead of computers it would be all thing anime. The Otaku look for a leader to help them defend themselves all of sudden POOF MR T arrives i dont think those thugs would mess with a Gaint black man wearing a shit load of chains LOL
but seriously that sucks im not surprised though predators pick the weakest prey maybe they should start travelling in groups at night that way at least some can get away sacrifice the few for the good of the many. I know im cold hearted bastard but its not happening to me so Oh well

Why people wear glasses mostly: Because the need to wear glasses has a lot more to do with heredity than reading or watching things on screens. What little it has to do with environment is dependent on what your parents had you doing between the ages of 0 and 3 years.
Where the hell do you people think nearsighted and farsighted people got their vision before tvs and computers? Anyway, it has much more to do with the shape of the eyeball and the flexibility of the focusing elements coupled with the vision processing cortex. (coupled with the problem we locked up all the tigers so that bad eyesight is no longer "selective breeding" issue) on topic: lazy predators *always* pick the easiest targets. If a few otaku take their USB tazers, work out a bit, and kick the crap out of a few back ... the "easy target" meme will be weakened. The other option is for the prey otaku to take some hints from gazelle -- pay attention to their surroundings and stay near the herds, lighted areas, and walk assertively as if they aren't sickly

I'd imagine that otaku are less likely to care about their appearence, and are therefore more likely to wear glasses instead of dealing with the hassles of contacts. This of course only applies to people who have bad eyesight in the first place. Alternatively, perhaps people with bad eyesight are less adept at physical activities due to vision problems, and end up being more likely to have "nerdy" hobbies than those born with good eyesight.
There are plenty of reasons why otaku might wear glasses more than other people, assuming its true. Correlation is not Causation. Anyway, as far as I know, there's no evidence that any sort of behavior has a significant effect on eyesight, despite the myriad bits of folk wisdom warning us about this or that. It's mostly genetics, I think. On topic, it doesn't matter whether or not they can identify rich/weak people. The fact is that Akihabara has a high percentage of weak/rich people who regularly go there, so any target has a higher probabilty of being rich/weak. The muggers could be choosing completely at random and it'd still be in their interest to hang out there. |

Meh, that happens in LA and New York -- nothing peculiar to Tokyo. On the other hand, I've lived in large cities where the culture is such that a mugger stupid enough to do that would have about 50 people beating the crap out of them. Most cities have good moments and bad moments in regard to social responsibility.
And at least according to the japan newspaper reports on various crimes, Tokyo is not bereft of good samaritans, so it just depends on someone's sense of civil righteousness being tweaked.

I've never witnessed a mugging, but you'd be 100% sure that if I saw a few people picking on one person, I'd be the first in there swinging to stop it. (Quite strange, considering I spent a good portion of my life IN New York City... *shrugs*)
As for the whole back-alley thing, whoever said it, you DO know that you can find TONS of good cheap anime stuff for less in some of Akihabara's back alleys, right? This conforms with the idea of shopping around and knowing where to go. If you're a genuine otaku, whether weak or strong, you'll learn and go to the places that sell the good stuff. (Yeah, it would have taken me at least another week of Akihabara scowering for me to learn those spots, but... that's how vacations are XD) Personally, I'm semi-otaku, but not in the stereotypical line. I do wear glasses, but only at night, and because I lived in the city, I'd second-guess on walking down back alleys after a certain hour, but to fully expect anyone or anything to jump out at me when I DO walk down those alleys during the later hours. I like swordplay, martial arts, and sports as well as video games and such, so I'm kinda all over the place. XD It just goes to show you that one who doesn't prepare him/herself for the situation will fall prey to it. (Like I never prepare for walking, so on occasion, I'll trip. XD)

Hey, can someone clear this up for me? How exactly do these bullies mug the otakus? What kind of force do they use? Guns are illegal for civilian use in Japan, so do these guys carry knives? Cuz if someone or even a group of 3 guys came up to me and tried to shake me down with no weapons of any kind, I would feel very little pressure to fork over my cash. Violence aside, if they don't have a gun, what is keeping you from running like hell into the nearest store or public area?
