I always thought the twins (Mary and Elizabeth) were pretty antagonistic towards each other but this episode has made me think otherwise, at the very least they seemed to be close when they were younger.

Would anyone care to enlighten me about their relationship? (I'm basically asking for spoilers so the mods can delete this if it isn't appropriate for the thread)

To add, they're changelings. Because of the Bloody Mary history recreation, the Fairy Queen and Mary swapped roles before the former's asecension to the throne. After the Massacre of the 300, the scars that Mary received forever confirmed her identity as "Mary."

TL, DR....The history recreation ripped them apart and now, Mary has to die for the Armada Battle to commence.

There is also the possibility that Elizabeth is actually the original Mary, and that they swapped roles because Elizabeth wants to save her sister. They were mentally linked so much as children that they actually share memories. And "Bloody Mary" and "Fairy Queen" didn't truly exist as individuals until the event of the 300 executions. So not even the twins know which ones they are.

Yup...that's right. Mary only became "Mary" after the 300 massacre, thanks to her scars.

That's why these two really are victims of the history recreation. I think that's also the reason why "Elizabeth" sides with Musashi, to try to make things right.

Now that you guys have mentioned it, there has been a History Recreation-related theme revolving around each season.

Season 1 revolves around criticism, pointing out to us that HR is flawed and its implementation is questionable.

Season 2 revolves around the victims, those whose lives were forever changed by HR. All three sides in the spotlight — the Far East [Horizon], Tres Espana [the Tachibanas, Felipe Segundo] and England [Elizabeth and Mary] — have been "scarred" by HR, and were no longer the same people after certain events related to HR happened (and to some, will happen) to them.

“Huh? What about that, Asama? I wasn’t looking for your clothes for your criminally huge boobs! But they were just so criminally huge, so to lessen the criminality, I tried them on! Man, there’s this gigaaaaantic space right around the chest!”
Asama loosed an arrow and the idiot smashed right through the wall. As she sighed and wiped the sweat off her brow, everyone turned silent for a moment. Right at the last moment, the leader of the squad of English knights realized something and said,
“Confiscated! That- that bow is confiscated!!”
“Eh?”, said Asama, as she just noticed what she was holding in her hand. She quickly raised her voice in reply,
“Wha-! Since when did I-! Um, you mean this? I uh…”
Asama raised the bow overhead.

The Fairy Queen nodded and raised her eyebrow at this.

Asama broke into a very obvious sweat at this. However,
“It’s uh… Well, uh… If I disassemble it like so, then it becomes a one-stringed guitar, and this becomes a pluck. See? Doesn’t it sound so~o nice?”
A metallic screeching reverberated throughout the room, causing a great many in it to cringe. In that moment, Asama calmly placed the bow back into her skirt. But as the Fairy Queen batted an eyelash,
“To bring such things into a conference hall like this…”
“P- Please wait a moment.”
Masazumi joined in the cover-up.
