And Karuta isn't a calligraphy contest. Losing some deftness isn't that big an issue. And for the rest - it's not like the left hand is all that much slower than the right.

A bit anti climatic match but considering the injury,I guess that was to be expected.

At least Shinobu is willing to play with her again despite crushing Chihaya.

Amazing episode. I loved the chemistry between Shinobu & Chihaya in this episode. It even made me tear up. Shinobu won't just finally gain a rival but a friend.

Also glad we got to see a little of the other players. Nice to see Sumire try her hardest even though she lost. I guess we will get Taichi's struggle to reach Class A next week.

Kind of hard to appreciate how strong Chihaya is if the author uses a cock and bull method. In any sport using your weak arm or leg leads to poor results unless properly trained.
Now if Chihaya practises with her left hand occasionally because that's how much of a caruta-baka she is I would have swallowed and appreciate it but now?
Furthermore if supposedly there's little difference in speed, precision and strength between using your left and right arm this a raises interesting question for me.Why hasn't anyone told Taichi to switch to his left hand during a luck of the draw situation, that way it would increase his chance of taking the opponent's card.

Anyway the latest episode was excellent I really liked that guitar pieced used when Chihaya grabbed the Shinobu card. I also laughed when Chihaya absolutely refused Shinobu's offer to play with her right hand.
I feel gutted there at the end for Tsubaka, no one is watching him.

Aww I was hoping to see the newcomers play a bit but it seems they won't get any real spotlight this season.

Loved the Chihaya-Shinobu interactions<3

This was another one of those episodes that feels like they're only 5 minutes long. Shinobu might just be my favorite character in the show, so I thought this episode was wonderful. They highlighted Shinobu's loneliness once again and it was pretty touching. Thankfully, it looks like she has finally found a rival -or a friend, even- in Chihaya, who is happy to play with her even if it means getting crushed, which she was. Although it was obvious she would lose (and not just because of her injury), I expected her to do a little better. She's progressed a lot since last year but the gap is still humongous. It's hard to picture Arata winning against a monster like Shinobu, but he must if he wants to study in Tokyo. This is something that must happen.

Sumire thinking she might actually be pretty good only to lose right after made me laugh. It's still way too early for her to make C class. Tsukuba will probably do it, and nobody will be there to watch him... Poor dude. I'm assuming Taichi's match against Retro was the semi-final (or maybe the quarter final?). The little we saw confirmed Retro is not a match for him anymore. He won by more than 15 cards.

Next episode will probably focus on Taichi. I hope we'll see the class A semi-final too. If Arata gets matched up against Eromu, we'll be able to gauge how Taichi compares to him.

The whole episode was worth it for Shinobu, despite that I'm still not happy with the idea of Chihaya playing injured and feared during the match that her injury could get serious.

I'm sure at some point we're going to see Shinobu's friend. It was kind of sad how they isolated her from others, only wanting her to improve and that's it.

Sumire is becoming one of my fav characters and I pity poor Tsukuba. Looking forward to seeing Taichi become A-class.

I still think that is very implausible.

Yes, the blogger was actually talking about the manga as the chapters were coming out. He/she didn't say anything about it being weird that she hadn't practised with that hand. He/she also had experienced having being forced to do it him/herself. What's important is whether Chihaya is someone who remembers the card positions with her body, or someone who remembers their placement on the field. When I said 'well practiced' before, I meant in the sense that she now reaches for the cards in her side instinctively, which is why the mirrored field worked for her.

And I would also think that Suetsugu-sensei wouldn't have included this development without checking with some actual karuta players that it is plausible.

But with regards to switching hands DURING a match - I think that's meant to be against the rules.

The only reason why the gap is humongous is because Chihaya's right hand is injured and she's suffering from the pain. She did touch Shinobu's card on the moment she went full serious right hand mode on Shinobu but she couldn't grab it the moment the pain started kicking in.

I hope we get Shinobu vs. Megumu for the class A semifinals. That would be great as well.

In any case, an amazing Shinobu and Chihaya interaction episode, and Shinobu character episode overall. Shinobu thought that she shouldn't play with people her age anymore, because her strength would make them lose heart, but I wonder if she's realized now that it was actually her act of holding back which hurt Satoko-chan more. Also, dat "Itsu?". Straight to the heart.

Chihaya maniacally watching fat Shinobu's match recording always makes me laugh. It's just such a cute image and I can just imagine her sister's disgust with her. Gotta admit, 2 cards is not much of a performance from Chihaya though; I guess her "precision" training has still got a ways to go. It's interesting that Chihaya managed to so closely comprehend Shinobu's movements at the start of the match; I wonder if we'll see her try applying them.

Anyway, even if we do get a Shinobu x Megumu semifinal match, I imagine there's no way it'd get a whole episode. I'll look forward to seeing how the rest of Mizusawa does, including where Kana and Tsutomu are at (I wonder if one of them will also move up to Class B? That's a pretty interesting thought).

I don't think it would have made that much of a difference if she hadn't been injured. She would have just won a few more cards. Shinobu's accuracy is still a lot better than hers.

As I said in a previous post I really liked the guitar BGM used in this episode anyone know the OST track of that BGM? The track reminded of a tracked used in a Bones anime with the soul sucking cat person (forgot the name).

Let me try to clarify the Shinobu card moment. Chihaya won Shinobu's card at the moment where Chihaya ignored the injury and removed the tape, she was at her normal self.
When Chihaya went to retrieve the card and about to grab it, or in other words about to grasp it, the pain kicked in preventing Chihaya from holding onto Shinobu's card.
Afterwards we saw the pain was too much for Chihaya (the short quick breaths) she couldn't do anything and lost.

She would have still lost but from that card moment we can interpret that Shinobu is within Chihaya's grasp but the injury is preventing from seeing it in the match.

Aww screw this I'll let hyperborealis do the explaining.

Chihaya, it's decision time. Now that you're no longer competing, whose games will you watch?

Notice who was missing from the room in Taichi's match? Even the team's advisor had moved on from the Class A's match to watch Taichi.

^Don't know, I'm expecting that she will appear. They gave this juicy piece of "drama" away too casually.

anyways ... best moment of the episode: the rewinded "Lame T-shirt" Shinobu slow motion, followed by Chihaya showing with pride her super rare mommy bear tanktop
Very good episode, and I'm happy because I was expecting a far more balanced match, instead Shinobu even overpowered Chihaya. But as Blaat explained they hinted that the real Chihaya strength is closer than that.
In any case, I'm liking Shinobu more and more. Finally she got the chance to have a friend, but she still tried to follow her sad rule of loneliness. Poor Shinobu
Now I'd like to see Kana-chan, where are you? Oh, and even Tsutomu.

I feel bad for Chihaya losing but given her injury, I wouldn't have expected any other result, especially when Shinobu is just as focused on Arata as Chihaya was. Poor Shinobu's stuck in some limbo where she wants friends but also wants to reject them too. That Karuta death curse. If there's a 3rd season (which I'd love but will take forever to come out ;_;*), I'd imagine that that'll be the moment when Chihaya will actually be able to match the Queen right down to the final card. For now though, she'll have to remain content with winning in rare character T-shirts.

I'm a little surprised that the focus has been on the Queen but little was given to Arata outside of being the original master's grandson. Does having the speed to slap two positions on opposite ends of the playing field really not impress anyone?

Lol, I'm just waiting for that episode where there is a Daddy Bear & Snowmaru convention in Osaka with rare prizes to be won, and, Chihaya and Shinobu coincidentally meet and participate in contests to win stuff . A man can dream .

Yeah, I guess with the number of episodes wrapping up, they can only focus on so much =0\. I'm sure if it had an undefined # of episodes left, they'd focus on everyone's match at the same time, like previous arcs. Too bad I don't expect them to focus on the semi-finals for A class, since it's kinda Taichi's moment to shine now.

did Taichi win already? before the last poem was read, he only had one card on his side

so next episode, probably till the last episode, will show his match against Rion

= = = =

I was hoping they didn't have to show the name of that random girl from Shinobu's childhood

sometimes, some subtlety of silence would be good considering her name didn't really mean anything for us

Actually, since silence in one episode often means focus in the next, it wouldn't surprise me to see Tsutomu and Kana in focus next week, with a build towards Taichi-Rion and Shinobu-Arata in the final two episodes.
