Black Lagoon, the guy gets his whole life turned around and has to find his own way based on his intelligence. Extremely awesome anime!

Young men only take on the world in sci-fi and fantasy. GTO and Golden Boy are more like... hmmm.

Well, you might try Akagi or Hikaru no Go, or something like Hajime no Ippo (though I have not watched that one).

Or, how about Mugen from Samurai Champloo? Not fantasy or SF, just quasi-historic.

um.... no fantasy or SF uh? would you take slice of life drama then?

Honey and Clover
certainly fits the description, exploring college-cocooned students, the struggles they go through as their face their uncertain future. H&C is a pretty realistic anime, delving into pressing issues that young adults face such as romance, fitting into new workplace, hardship of finding work, nostalgia of old college life, fear of uncertainty.

By taking on the world I mean pursuing their dreams.

Genshiken season 1 & 2 ~ Its about a club at school where otaku enjoy reading manga, cosplaying, watching animes, gaming and such. Season 1 doesn really have what your looking for, but season 2 sure does, and its really worth watching, its a very enjoyable comedy.

If women were acceptable in this thread, i'd vote for Shurrei of Saiunkoku Monogatari as someone who pursues her dream against high odds.

Oh, OK, I understand. In that case Hikaru no Go, Akagi, and Hajime no Ippo would probably be good examples... but not so much Samurai Champloo.

And a really good fit would be Yakitate Japan! The hero's goal is to make a national bread that represents Japan, and he goes to lots of cooking contests to pursue this dream. It's quite entertaining.

If you'd accept fantasy, then Fullmetal Alchemist would be perfect....WElcome to the NHK maybe?

Genshiken 2 fits, but I'd recommend you watch Genshiken first. Welcome to the NHK fits, as well as Nodame Cantabile.
