Very much like the game TIE Fighter....if it had been done fifteen years later.

Maybe Disney will take this route someday for a full movie...? Since they seem to favor 3D over traditional entirely nowadays.

I believe there are 2d elements there. The blurb on the video says:

Quote:
Introducing a groundbreaking technique that seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques, first-time director John Kahrs takes the art of animation in a bold new direction with the Oscar®-nominated short, "Paperman." Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him. Created by a small, innovative team working at Walt Disney Animation Studios, "Paperman" pushes the animation medium in an exciting new direction.
Either way, some impressive stuff. Puts the efforts of Anime producers to shame, as it's really seamless. Of course, Disney has always been good at the technical stuff. It's a great short, but I'd be interested in seeing if they can use the technique to make a great movie. Time will tell...

Paths of Hate (2010)
directed by Damian Nenow

Quote:
Damian Nenow was born in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in 1983. He graduated from the National Film School in Lodz with a degree in animation and special effects, and joined Platige Image in 2006.

Nenow directed "Paths of Hate", which was released in 2010. The film is a short tale about the demons that slumber deep in the human soul and have the power to push people into the abyss of blind hate, fury and rage.

The film was short-listed for an Academy Award nomination. It received a Special Distinction at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. It was honoured at Comic-Con, the world's largest comic and video game festival. It also received the Best of Show award at the 2011 SIGGRAPH festival.

Nenow is currently working on his first feature-length movie, "Another Day of Life", based on the eponymous book written by Ryszard Kapuscinski. The film will be an innovative mixture of documentary and animation.
