Smile Anime of the Day - Any User Can Choose It!

Any user can pick any anime to be the Anime of the Day. Please include a few lines of text and a picture, if available.

Today's Anime of the Day is...

GeGeGe no Kitaro (1968 - 1969, 1971 - 1972, 1985 - 1988, 1996 - 1998, 2007 - 2009)

(In chronological order)

With a new series made every decade since 1968, Shigeru Mizuki's GeGeGe no Kitaro stands alongside Doraemon, Sazae-san, Anpanman, Crayon Shin-chan, Chibi Maruko-chan, and even Astro Boy as one of Japan's most popular, beloved, and enduring anime franchises. What began as a manga in 1959 is now credited for popularizing yokai - traditional Japanese monsters. The series follows the good-natured ghost boy Kitaro, his father Medama-oyaji ("Eyeball Father" - see if you can guess what he looks like!), his close friends Nezumi Otoko (Rat Man) and Neko Musume (the original Cat Girl), as well as numerous other yokai and their various (mis)adventures. Like Obake no Q-Taro, the '80s version of GeGeGe no Kitaro was broadcast with subtitles on Hawaii's KIKU television channel. GeGeGe no Kitaro has spawned numerous video games, toys, live-action movies, and much more. In fact, the current Happy Meal toys in Japan are GeGeGe figures. In 2008, a darker, more serious version of the story was aired as Hakaba Kitaro, which has introduced the series to many American anime fans. Fans can even "meet" Kitaro in the Japanese town of Sakaiminato.

Today's Anime of the Day is...

Moral Hazard (2001)

Often considered to be perhaps the single worst anime of all time, the cheap hentai release Moral Hazard - often condemned as inane, incoherent, nonsensical, and despicable - follows a schoolgirl who is saved from a rapist in the park... until her rescuer reveals himself as a depressed salaryman and decides that he might as well rape her too. Eventually, both men end up chasing her through the park. Sometimes considered to be "so bad, it's funny", other times considered to be a particularly depressing wallow in cheap degradation, Moral Hazard is a definitive example of the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel in low-rent hentai releases. In The Anime Encyclopedia, the authors note the resemblance to historic '80s child porn Lolita Anime episode Dying for a Girl.

Today's Anime of the Day is...

Nekojiru Gekijou (1999)

A brutal, ugly, hard-hitting series that was eventually dropped by even its late-night broadcaster, Nekojiru Gekijou was based on a critically-acclaimed manga - Nekojiru Udon - by two manga-ka who drew themselves as cats and one of which committed suicide in 1998. The series, filled with nostalgia, zaniness, brutality, black humor, surrealism, and violence, follows two cats who, along with their drunken father and housewife mother, provide examples of everything wrong with Japanese society. Before the manga-ka's suicide, the two cats - Nyako and Nyatta - were supposed to be used by Tokyo Electric in promotional campaigns, although this was canceled after the suicide. In 2001, a short, surreal film with very little dialogue called Cat Soup was released internationally to widespread critical acclaim.

Ha ha, I heard of the movie, and that it was awesome. Never thought it was based off of this show. Learning new things every day.

OK, here we go -
The anime of the day is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya!

A series with an immense cult following, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya follows a high school student, Kyon, who unwillingly gets wrapped into a fellow student's, Haruhi Suzumiya's, fiasco. Haruhi, who unknowingly has the power to create and destroy universes, wishes to meet extraterrestial beings. She makes a club, the SOS Brigade, and drafts () Kyon and a few other members to join her club. Little does she know that other than Kyon, her fellow club members are all interesting figures! First she gets Yuki Nagato, a bibliophile robot on a mission to keep Haruhi calm. Next she drafts Mikuru Asahina, a time traveler from a time far in the future. The only member who willingly joins, Itsuki Koizumi, is an ESPer. Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki work together with Kyon, the only "normal" one, to keep Haruhi's powers under control.

Though rather overrated in my opinion, the show is a real gem. Great for those into science fiction and bishoujo.

Today's Anime of the Day is...

Sazae-san (1969 - present)

Ever since she first brought a daily ray of sunshine to war-torn Japan in 1946, Sazae-san has been the most beloved and long-running cultural icon that Japan has. On the surface, it doesn't seem like much. Just the daily life of an ordinary housewife and her family. No giant robots. No battling monsters. No magical transforming bishoujo schoolgirls. It's not something that most Western anime fans would be interested in. Yet, Sazae-san has endured. Although the manga was ended in 1974 (shortly before creator Machiko Hasegawa's death), the series has inspired a radio serial, two live-action TV dramas, a television drama based on its creation(!), and the world's longest-running animated series, which began in 1969 and is still going strong. In 2002, after Doraemon started using computers, Sazae-san became the last anime show to use traditional cel animation and not computers - echoing the show's themes of tradition and warmth. Sazae-san will likely be the longest-running animated series for years to come. Despite the change in culture over time, Sazae-san's popularity has never faded.

Hope I'm not being presumptuous by posting an anime of the day...

anywaysss, the anime of the day is...

Clannad (2007)

Clannad is an adaption by Kyoto Animation (the studio that made The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) of a Key Visual Novel. These two names alone should tell you what great quality you can expect from this series. The story might, at first, seem like your typical high school life/harem romance: delinquent guy meets shy girl, other girls join the fun, guy helps solve girls’ problems. However, after watching the first few episodes, you’ll see that this anime is much deeper than that. While this series does have a lot of “moe” content, don’t be fooled. This series has many, especially later on, tear-jerking moments. Split into two seasons (Clannad and Clannad: After Story) there are more than enough episodes (44) and OVA’s to appease anyone. If you watch quickly enough you may even be able to watch the new OVA right when it comes out on July 1st!

Overall, I feel that unless you really abhor “moe” content, you should definitely give this series a try. For me at least, Clannad was one of those rare gems that stayed with me long after I finished the series.

Okay, today's Anime of the Day is Doraemon!

A long running anime series about a lovable blue robotic cat who is sent back in time to better Nobita Nobi's life. In the future, Nobita experienced nothing but misery in his life, and therefore flunked out of school, lost his job, and left his family line neck high in debt and financial issues. His great-great grandson, Sewashi, sends the cat, Doraemon, back in time to bring joy to Nobita's life, so as to change the Nobi family's fate.
A very beloved series in Japan, kinda like how moast Americans watched Sesame Street as kids. Unfortunately, it has yet to get an American release, and the sheer amount of episodes will likely keep localization (in its entirety) from ever happening.

Today's Anime of the Day is...

Taiko Drum Master Clay Anime (2005 - 2006)

An irresistably cute claymation anime series based on the popular video game series, Taiko Drum Master was aired on Japanese satellite channel Kids Station, while a manga version was published in kodomo magazine Comic Bom Bom. The clay anime series follows two barrels, turned into drums named Don and Katsu by the Great Soul, who embark on short adventures as drums with their friends the drum sticks and other colorful characters. Taiko Drum Master Clay Anime has never been aired outside of Japan, but the series has been fansubbed and thus exposed to many North American fans of the series. Many fans enjoy the cutesy clay look of the series that stays true to the games and includes many anime archetypes.

Today's Anime of the Day is...

Maicching Machiko-sensei (1981 - 1983)

One of the more controversial shows of the 1980s, Maicching Machiko-sensei was a school comedy that followed the misadventures of a scantily-clad teacher who was always losing her clothes, and her numerous students who were always hatching schemes to make her lose her clothes. But, instead of getting angry, Machiko just laughs it off and utters her signature phrase "maicchingu!" ("shame!"). A frequent target of the Japanese PTA, who were outraged over such raunchy content in an alleged "children's show", Maicching Machiko-sensei also appeared on TV Asahi's survey of Japan's 100 favorite anime shows. The series was based on a manga and has spawned two live-action movies.

Today's anime of the day (June 22, 2009) is:

After War Gundam X (1996)

Created by Sunrise in 1996 it ended up following the tremendously popular Gundam Wing but came at a time when mecha anime was starting to undergo a pardigm shift following the release of Neon Genesis Evangelion. As a result of this and being the 4th Gundam series in a row without break it failed to garner the ratings that sponsors for looking for and was cancelled and wrapped up in only 39 episodes, 11 short of the usual amount alloted to a Gundam series. However it still made it's mark in the franchises history in the end and was lucky enough to be granted a relatively successful manga sequel series in 2004 (8 years after the series initial debut) for the series DVD release and as proof that it wasn't forgotten about or dismissed by Gundam fans or the company. To this day it remains an intriguing look at what a post apocalyptic setting for a Gundam series could look like.

Today's Anime of the Day is...

Chibi Maruko-chan (1990 - 1992, 1995 - present)

Often considered to be another Sazae-san, Momoko Sakura's Chibi Maruko-chan, ever since the manga debuted in 1989, has been a beloved staple of anime in Japan thanks to its gentle nostalgia and warm humanity. The series follows the daily life of a lazy little girl named after the manga-ka, but nicknamed "Maruko-chan", her hardworking older sister, and their traditional Japanese family. Spawning an anime film and two live-action TV dramas, Chibi Maruko-chan continues to be one of the highest-rated anime shows in Japan, and was broadcast without subtitles on California's KSCI.
