That edgy stuff about torture and skinning is all fake crap. I just went through chp 32-51 and the story is very similar to the LN summary from the wiki apparently. In the WN Subaru finds Rem's died body in the garden impaled by crucifix looking blades and on her body were countless other wounds as if she was repeated stabbed to death by a sadist, both her weapon arm and her flail is missing and yet she still tried to struggle to the end. He goes kind of insane after first seeing Petra and now Rem's dead body, repeatedly saying it was all wrong and how it isn't his fault while fleeing away from that corpse.
After seeing Ram's body next he arrives at a door and reaches to touch the doorknob, he immediately feels a painful burning sensation and reacts by pulling his hand away from the door. To his horror however, his finger was missing, he panics and tries to reach out for the frozen finger still attached to the doorknob to reattach it but his elbow wouldn't obey him. As he tried to step forward his leg broke off and he fell down in pain. His body started breaking apart and one of his eyeballs fell out, he was kind of surprised his remaining one could still see. He blankly wonders why he is still alive, whether his consciousness persists due to his heart or brain, eventually he perishes and this is his first gruesome death while saying he was way too late.
Upon being revived he just kept laughing silently like a madman while Rem asks him what's up. Later on he is kidnapped by the witch’s cult but he was just drooling and smiling like a lunatic, even Betelgeuse was perturbed by how he kept silently smiling insanely at him while being interrogated. Afterwards Rem showed up and got impaled by a bunch of cross swords with Betelgeuse explaining his authority of invisible hands. Subaru is snapped back into sanity again by her apparent death and keeps yelling how he will kill Betelgeuse who is happy to see he has found a new purpose in life and a reason to live - revenge. Leaving him in handcuffs, Betelgeuse says that Subaru will either die or be saved depending on if the Gospel book tells him to save Subaru or not, which will prove if he is a ally to them.
Rem slowly regains consciousness and remains alive long enough to free Subaru, by using her vomited blood to magically freeze and break the metal, and die in his hands as she tells him she loves him. Subaru screams in despair over this but eventually makes it back to the residence where he witnesses a large beast that reminds him of a feline, with golden eyes and grey fur and tail. He is frozen from afar by a freezing-like warmth that breaks him to pieces, is was so cold to the degree he felt absurdly warm from it and he drowned in the pleasure just letting go of everything and dying. He somehow hears a voice in the distance "Sleep (Die)----together with my daughter" right before melting away completely.
Now is when he becomes all MILLER for revenge and tries to enlist help from people but gets turned down by the other parties just like in the LN. Gets a carriage, run into whale, loses Rem after she stays back to let him escape, doesn’t understand why no one remembers her, gets betrayed by Otto the hyena, etc. His next death was when he ran into Pack who blamed him for killing Emilia by revealing his ability. He lists Subaru’s three sins, the first is breaking a promise with Emilia and how he has no idea how much he hurt her heart. The second is disregarding her wishes and returning back here which may have pushed the witch cult into taking action quicker. The third is causing Emilia’s death.
Pack says that Emilia is his reason for living and that he will destroy this country in accordance to the contract. He will bury everything in ice and snow as a farewell gift for her. He also mentions he understands it will probably end without that happening. He can't win against Reinhard who will probably stand in his way if he tries to turn everything into a world of ice like the forest he and Emilia lived in. He then asks Subaru if a person is slowly frozen from the tip of their extremities onwards then when exactly will they die and if Subaru would like to try it, he says he will accept Subaru's silence as a confirmation and proceeds to freeze him slowly to death.
Despite the intense tormenting pain and despair Subaru doesn't even register it anymore as he mentally breaks down. In the far background there was a voice:
“The mist came out huh. Before dying it seems you summoned a troublesome fellow”
Subaru was going to lose his sanity at any second.
“Gluttony……aah, it’s known as the white whale now huh. Calling that thing, letting Lia die, and even dying yourself……seriously, there’s just no helping you”.
He couldn’t hear the far away voice, the only thing he heard was his resounding screams. But then the next moment the screams disappeared and he heard a loud laughing voice.
A cackling laughter, it was the laughter he had memory of hearing before, from the man he hated to death. He tried to find the source of that ringing laughter until he eventually realized that the sounds in his ears were from his own mouth laughing out loud. No longer recognizing the pain, his mind started to become dominated by pleasure. He wouldn’t stop laughing, it was a loud laughter in mockery of himself, over Rem's death (letting her get eaten by Moby Dick), causing Emilia's death (telling her about his shinimodori), and even how he’s dying a dog's death right now. He hazily ponders ‘Aah, it’s really exactly so’, “----You’re sloth eh, Subaru” (repeating of Betelgeuse’s words in his mind) he finally broke apart and lost consciousness.
Subaru reaches his lowest point here and asks Rem in the next chapter if she will run away with him, far away from Lugnica and all the way west to Kararagi but she refuses, and the next chapter is the legendary From Zero which I will stop spoiling myself here. I do wonder how much of this will get animated or skipped though.
Oh btw, that bs about the author editing his WN and toning done the torture is false. I know because all of this is from me comparing the current chapters and the ones from 2013 when arc 3 was written, all thanks to the waybackmachine. Honestly though, I feel there were a lot of genuine despair in these chapters even without that cringe shit. It was sad to see Subaru breaking down emotionally and becoming a drooling mess. There was even one point where Otto left him for dead and he was crying and begging for Rem to come save him, despite her already being eaten, and how he didn't want to die there, etc. The despair is present I feel, it's just not actually the whole skin your waifu alive while she tries not to scream like those fake spoilers.
The thing is I could kind of see how that fake spoiler came to be at some points of the lines I read, it's like it was a Google Translator who guesslated most of it. The fake torture scene is probably mistranslated from the first time he saw Rem's dead body in the garden and how his "voice betrayed him" when he unintentionally yelled out from suddenly feeling terrified at the sight of her death, also how he kept saying it wasn't his fault over and over after leaving Rem's corpse behind. One of the senpais here can feel free to correct me.
