I thought both episodes were great this weekend.
Lot of emotions coming from characters like Hyodou and Shizuku. I like Mako so far, a bit shy for a character but has potential. If she is to become Tatara's partner, they do have a bit to work on still. Gaju is a strange guy imo...but seems to be quite skilled with Latin dancing. I love the chereography used his episode especially at several key moments to capture to expressions of the characters. Comedy still remains funny for this show with Tatara's character.

I have a hard time looking past when Sengoku did here. Not only did he risk scarring Tatara's psyche for life and putting him off dancing for good, he basically did it because he considered him expendable in a scheme to help the student who was his meal ticket. That's scumbag behavior in my book.

Tatara's situation is very similar to Eiichiro's from Baby Steps. So Sengoku does have a rather sink or swim attitude with him. But I've never gotten the impression that Sengoku considered him expendable. And Hyodo is definitely not his meal ticket.

He used Tatara in a scheme to get Hyodo disqualified to protect him, knowing full well that the experience would be incredibly traumatic for Tatara. How is that not treating him as expendable? I might even go as far as "disposable".

Tatara came to him and said he wants to be like Sengoku and go Pro, in an arena where most of the kids his age have been doing this since they were little. We know that Shizuka and Hyodo have been partners since they were about 7 or so. So, while yes, he did it because he wanted to protect Hyodo, it was also because he wanted to give Tatara some experience, as well as see how he'd handle the pressure. Because Sengoku is also a Pro and totally understands what's necessary to be a top ranking dancer. Tatara has a lot of catching up to do if he seriously wants to compete with these guys. Sengoku is definitely no saint, but I don't think he's quite as ill intentioned as you've unfortunately, gotten the impression of him.

I think you're giving him way, way too much credit as far as his intentions are concerned.
The fact that this didn't blow up in his face totally doesn't mean it wasn't a horrible decision to begin with. I'm glad Tamaki at least is willing to stand up to him.

I don't think he thought that far. Which is arguably worse - he's been completely irresponsible about the whole thing. But I don't think he thought "it could traumatize Tatara, but I'll do it anyway". More like "it looks fun, it'll get me what I want, let's roll".

Oh, I agree, that it wasn't a good decision. I just don't agree that Sengoku's reasons for doing so had anything to do with him just not caring about Tatara at all. He's brash and self centered, yes, but that makes him just the right kind of person to get things moving when necessary. Tamaki's the "mom/wife" who keeps him in line and smooths things over when he goes to far. (I swear that woman must pray every night to have a swift hand a sturdy shoe, whenever she has to deal with him :P) They play they're respective roles well.

In point of fact, he's been brutally awful as a "teacher" for Tatara from the beginning - pretty much everything he's done may as well have been done to discourage him from every wanting to learn dancing again.

I just really don't like Sengoku's character. At best he's irresponsible. And even that is still pretty damning considering he's dealing with teenagers. Most of which are seriously aiming to make a career out of this.
He occasionally does something decent, but honestly he's just lucky. Just dumb luck that Tatara has been able to handle all this and it has spun him in the direction of wanting to dance. Focusing on something positive though...so far I like Mako's character. Sympathize her having a brother who is a jerk. While I think confronting her brother directly would be best, I suppose this is fine too. Was a nice scene with her and Tatara near the end of the episode and at least she has an immediate goal.

He definitely didn't take him seriously at first and wanted to get rid of him, but after he realized he was serious, I don't think he ever intended to discourage him from that point on. He's trying to test Tatara's limits and he doesn't mince his words, but being completely irresponsible and overconfident, he doesn't think about the consequences it can have.

He couldn't even be bothered to give the kid any instruction until Tamaki literally whacked him in the head with her indoor shoe and forced him. His idea of teaching was to have him do a box and then go to sleep, or have unpaid students teach him.
I think Tatara has his attention now, but he certainly didn't get any for free - he had to earn it.

Giraffes. Giraffes with an attitude. Some of the characters are rather one-sided too.
Luckily it is kind of amusing, in a tragicomic way. But not exactly Baby Steps, no. This actually makes me kind of glad I'm not into sports dancing. |
