Studio Ghibli Co-Founder and Director Isao Takahata Passes Away
Director, Studio Ghibli Co-Founder Isao Takahata Passes Away
Here's the statements from the Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki and Ghibli president Kiyofumi Nakajima This is very unfortunate since the death of Satoshi Kon. He did great work with Grave of the Fireflies and The Tale of Princess Kaguya which I both enjoy. And now, he's gone. Rest in peace |

I did an interview with Michael Dudok de Wit, who did The Red Turtle in co-production with Ghibli. Takahata was a frequent topic of conversation, since it was he and Sasaki who approached Michael about making a feature because they loved his Oscar-winning short "Father and Daughter" (both said "This is a Japanese film"). His awe for Takahata was pretty evident, especially considering that Takahata didn't draw - at all. For somebody like de Wit who's a master animator, to be a director of animated features without being an artist is a strange and remarkable thing, but it allowed Takahata to adapt the visual style of every movie he made to whatever he thought suited the material best.

Long and fruitful yes, in terms of personal fulfilment. Some might dispute the "fruitful" part though, given Takahata's legendarily slow work rate. Miyazaki himself called him a "slugabed sloth".
