Well, the animation quality this week suffered quite a bit in the first half, though it was considerably better by the second half. It's still too early for me to say that I like where the post-Kamina story is going, but Nia's character turned out better than I expected, and the generals and the Spiral King make for some interesting enemies.

I actually really liked the animation in the first half, it was Norio Matsumoto the guy who did Haibane Renmei 7 and it really shows, very natural and nuanced.

"Near"? It's "Nia", Omni. Unless you're mixing names up with Death Note.
Anyway, I just finished watching this episode. I think it was ok, not epic like the previous two but it still had some interesting things. An actually I don't think animation did suffer. More like the design of the characters was a bit simplified in the first half (but the animation was smooth just like in the other episodes, unless with "bad quality animation" you're actually referring to other technical elements that really do not have a lot in common with "animation"), and I think it was intentional, because in the second half things were back to normal. Why would that be intentional? Well, don't you think that it's a bit of a weird coincidence that

Character designs and mood suddenly returned to normal in the moment Simon "found" Nia? It's as if they clearly wanted to highlight that Nia's meeting with Simon might help him cast off the "shadows" that have been haunting him after Kamina's death. I mean, even the whole colour usage and lightning usage in the first half is pretty dark, and so are the general designs. But after Nia's meeting, everything is back to normal as well as the colours and mood. That is most likely intentional, in my opinion.
Other than that, other random points about this episode:

- I thought Yoko would have somehow reacted badly after Kamina's death, but although she is still suffering, she is still atleast trying her best to lead the Dai Gurren-dan and the crew.
- As we suspected, Simon is angsting a lot, and has lost confidence as well. As a consequence, both Lagann and the full Gurren-Lagann litterally end up "vomiting" energy (this is my first time seeing a mech vomiting, ) and losing control.
- Nia is M-O-E. There, I said it. I love how she is totally clueless about humans, due to the fact that she always lived secluded, and that the only human she used to know is her father, which is the Spiral King (the main villain).
- as I predicted, the one who replaces Kamina as Gurren's pilot is Rossiu.
- We get to see Kitan's ganmen in action and saving the day (since Simon still cannot control Lagann that well), and just like Kamina he started naming his own moves. Well that's good, I kinda like the mecha-design of his ganmen unit.
- Last thing, it indeed seems that the Spiral King's "fortress" is that floating city that we saw months ago in one of the photos that showed some of the posters/art of Gurren Lagann. I can't wait to see more of that.
Quick thoughts on Gurren 9: Amazing episode once again, with quite a few amazing Norio Matsumoto scenes here and there (most first half), new Opening animation, Spiral God Generals, new mecha designs, foreshadowing, an exciting plot, good introspective yet still fun script and SUPER CUTE NIA. Lagann FUKKEN DELIVERS. Most fun show for me this season.

She's a useless underclass bum alien girl that leeches off our poor hero.
It all makes sense now.
well, yeah.. this anime female seems to be useless. Yoko just kill Kamina.. she is even worse than useless.
Nia is still new, she seems to be doing fine.. wait until she awakes into her Buster Machine.

Uh, no, that's not what I meant.
Since he brought name similarities up, I was making a joke to the anime NieA_7, where protagonist's room is inhabited by a useless under-class alien named Niea. (In Japanese, reads the same as the other two Nias mentioned. ニア)

I am still not sure how to interpretate Yoko's bothered-ness look. I would be bothered too if you see Shimon left an hour ago crying for his brother and come back with a girl...
Anyhow, next episode spoiler was spoiling stuffs about the whole gurren-dan trying to interigate information out of Nia.. so its bad bad, Yoko might as well be one of the team.
