it's a bit of a stretch, but we did see Asuma's mother. only to be killed instantly of course. and we saw gaara's mom for a second before she died also... hmm. i'm noticing a pattern kiba's mom better watch out

I actually liked this chapter and flashback quite a bit. i think might dai was pretty perfect. his loser-ness makes gai's character make total sense.

i'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that as gai is dying he will reveal to lee that he is indeed his father, but couldn't remember his mother's face to help raise him as a baby or something silly like that. just think of the emotion!

Did Gai ever teach Rock Lee the 8-gates technique?

Yes, the inner gates is Lee's trump card, just like Gai.

Even if i have a small complaint, i would have preferred to have Gai's father as a loser in life to the very end, but in the end he got a moment of greatness by being able to save his son from the 7 swordsmen all alone. But it seems he had to be used as a measuring stick of how awesome the 8-gates thing is: if a genin can face the 7 swordsmen then a special jounin can face the Sage-god.
I'm right wit cha. No complaints. Even the wordplay... Might Die

Agreed except I think Gai will pass on and we'll get a "thanks father" from lee

I really hope kimish sticks to this death like he has so far. What I really hope doesn't happen is that once he dies and says goodbye, obito shows up after helping naruto and is,"as I'm dying anyway, let me help you all as a goodbye" and brings him back to life pain style.

I say that because I rather guy go out like a hero and die meaningful instead of dying useless and comes back knowing his best wasn't his best.

In this chapter it's stated that Guy can't use ninjutsy or genyutsy. Yet many chapters ago he used summoning jutsy.

Does summoning jutsy count as ninjutsy? Or did Kishi do a retcon?

yea it doesn't make sense. iirc summoning is a ninjustu tech. to be sort of fair, it's the only thing gai has done that hasn't been taijutsu, so maybe kishi never intended summoning to be a ninjutsu tech and we all just assumed it was?

I just assume that Gai eventually learned Ninjutsu before becoming a jounin. He was just a little slow, like his father.

Yeah it's possible summoning was not intended to be ninjutsy (Lmao at MK).
It is just a contract. But I can't seem to recall if characters form seals before the hand slam

Don't be mean!

Anyway databook states that summoning jutsy is infect a ninjutsy.

Quote:
Summoning Technique (口寄せの術, Kuchiyose no Jutsu)
Ninjutsu, C-rank, Offensive, Defensive, Supplementary
Users: Uzumaki Naruto, Hatake Kakashi, et al

[pictures of Jiraiya smearing blood over his summoning tattoo and slamming his hand on the ground]
→Jiraiya uses his left hand. Naruto uses his right hand for the contract. In any case, the user's blood is essential.

Through a blood contract, fantastic creatures can be called forth!!

This is a kind of space-time ninjutsu, allowing the user to summon any living being with whom they signed a contract in blood, at any time and place they desire. The summoned creature will obey the user with its life, helping in every situation, whether it be fighting or fleeing. The user smears their own blood on the hand they signed the contract with and kneads chakra by doing handseals. Then by turning the palm of that hand to the place they want to summon, they call forth a subordinate they can rely on.

-Hmm, I'd like to offer up an alternative explanation. If this chapter is true, then it seems Guy has the same problem as Lee: he HAS actual chakra, but just can't "knead" it to use ninjutsu (like say the elements or making clones) and genjustu. Perhaps summoning just needs you to have the current equivalent chakra reeve to summon the creature, not requiring you to actually "knead" the chakra into a shape.

yeah except jiraiya teaches naruto that the hand seals are boar, dog, bird, monkey, sheep.

idk, maybe it works both ways

i thought the databooks went out the window when kishi completely altered kakashi's age during the obito flashbacks?

Am I the only one getting annoyed that there's another carbon copy of Gai and Rock Lee? Ofcourse Gai's dad is a guy with bushy eyebrows, big eyes, shiny hair, who can't shut up about youth. Why do all these characters have to be the exact same? They all started out as insecure losers, and then they were taught the youth routine by their dad / teacher and became the obnoxious, over-energetic people we know today.

actually i like it quite a bit. it's reminiscent of the oldschool naruto manga in which every generation surpasses the previous one. gai's father wasn't a carbon copy. he was known as a loser and forever a genin. gai is well respected as a fighter at least. he took the training from his father and earned respect with it and became a jounin and elite teacher. dai's personality was a charade to cover up his embarrassment. gai's personality is more of an homage to his father
