Heheh. I am VERY tempted to replace my DN wallpaper with a Horo one, but I'm afraid of what peoples' reactions will be when they see it. I already get enough guff from my family and friends for liking anime as it is. I keep telling them that I don't like hentai, but I think my case would be a little shallow if they saw a naked anime character with wolf ears on my desktop . I suppose I could go with the clothed version of Horo, but it just doesn't capture her natural beauty. Oh wells .

Certainly a very understanding issue there. May be tough to fight against that call of hentai with Horo's glory like that as the wallpaper. Be tough myself simply because going to lectures and having that boot up on the laptop might be a little though to get away with .

But definitely will make use of it at normal times. After all it would be a crime to not let Horo rule the screen if it can be helped.

FYI, it seems to be that I've managed to convince those who were changing the wiki page to Holo that Horo should be used, so unless something changes (Official DVD/book etc. comes out calling her Holo or something), it should stay as Horo on the Spice and Wolf wiki page, since that seems to be the most widely accepted spelling for her.

Kinda expected to see some more posts about this... Still, this is a tricky one for RAW watchers - it reminds me of some the the trickier eps of Juuni Kokki - a lot of specialist terms, making it tricky to follow. Still, most of my all-time favourite anime are based on novels, which have more advanced dialogue, so I'm not surprised.

For a rough summary:

The pair arrive at a port city, and Horo is excited about all the food (apples!) in (apples!) the (apples!) market (apples!). Lawrence pretends not to notice Horo drooling over the apples, though eventually gives her a coin to get some - and she gets a load and eats the lot herself.

Shortly after they go to trade in the furs, with Lawrence doing the initial bartering (goes a bit poetic, heh) but then Horo steps in and gets like double the price. Makes Lawrence a bit depressed to be honest, though he's not angry with Horo.

Anyway, they meet up with Zeren again and discuss things further. Later that night, Lawrence is trying to teach Horo all the different types of silver coin, but she finds it mind numbing since there's so many.

The next day Lawrence sets up a more formal agreement with Zeren and then goes to meet a friend of his, who turns out to be a real lady's man and goes after Horo instantly. Lawrence gets jealous (which makes Horo happy). Anyway, they try to determine what's happening to the silver content of the coins. Horo tries tapping them together, but says she can't tell any difference. But Lawrence had noticed her ears twitch and correctly guesses that she could tell but kept quiet about it.

It turns out the silver content is decreasing very slightly, not increasing. Lawrence is stressing over what's going on and Horo gives him some generic advice - to step back and analyse the situation from above. She then suggests that Zeren might not be acting alone. Lawrence follows that thread and then suspects that Zeren is simply a flunky in a much bigger scheme and guesses the profit-making scheme behind it.

I couldn't quite follow everything said, so this is partly my own theory (which I've had somewhat vaguely since last week): get a load of individual merchants to invest in currency speculation. That would affect currency exchanges in a particular direction. The net result being that the merchants who were fooled into joining the scheme end up with the less valuable new silver coins leaving the schemers with more valuable foreign coins. Or something like that.

Like a lot of people, apparently, my Japanese isn't up to the details of the conversations in ep3. But I enjoyed it a lot anyway, and there are definitely many Horo-sama avatars and sigs there to be had. By the way, thanks to the people who got the wiki to change to Horo. Holo had the wrong associations.

My favorite part was Horo bargaining -- although I hope it doesn't rebound on them next time they're in town if the apple smell on the furs is gone by the time the other merchant tries to sell them.

Haven't watched but judging from what you summarized here, it seems to me this episode follows novel closely. So far so good.

"You still have much to learn young padawan" ~ horo

Horo is quite the haggler - it almost puts Lawrence to shame (in fact he could barely hold in his scream when he see how much the buyer is willing to pay compared to the original offer ).

Nice ep though it makes me wonder how much more development it is going to take until the next turning point. Lawrence and horo are pretty much friends now, it's going to be a blast to see them step up a level.

And here we have the apple fetish already...horo is scary when guarding her food (even though lawrence paid for it ).

Well, since they seem to have replaced Yarei with Chloe in at least one scene, I hope they deviate from the novel a bit more.

...well, basically, Yarei is a complete ass. I have only read the first novel, but I wouldn't be upset if he became food.

So far, Chloe is a nice character. From what we know of her though, I can't imagine her sinking to the level of someone like Yarei. It will be very disappointing, unless they either modify the character, or simply keep them separate.

Horo really shows what she can do on this one. Her sharp mind and great ability to haggle really put Lawrence to shame on this one. Think she managed to take care of some of her food bills for quite a while .

Pretty clever using the apples to add a scent to the furs thinking ahead like that. Besides she's completely obsessed with them so it was win/win. Poor Lawrence should be careful not to get between her and apples in the future. Was fun watching her stare at the fruit longingly.

Nice moments though like Lawrence tucking in Horo. Or how jealous he got as she responded to that guy (yeah great descriptive abilities I know). Of course she wouldn't fall so easily for such things, but seeing the angry expression on Lawrence was worth it.

Toss in actually getting a good view of Horo's wolf form is bonus. So now anyone who wanted a good view has it.

Since I can't understand much of what's going on can't say much about the plot. Thanks to kari-no-sugata for some help in that regard. Certainly could be a plot like that. Getting many merchants to buy into the silver currency that's dropping in value in exchange for more foreign coins leading to good profit for those behind it. Do wonder how Lawrence and Horo will tackle this.

Can't wait for next week though looking at that image for the preview.

"The Wolf And Her Useless Companion".....

From the title and preview alone, we all know that trouble starts brewing with the Medeo(?) Guild digs up the dirt on Horo and sent their goons after Lawrence and her.

It all depends on whether Horo gets captured in the next episode to see if they will stick with the plot of Volume 1. IMO, they can escape and dive into Volume 2 and went back to the later part of Volume 1 3/4 throughout the series.

But at least we get to see a Druken Wolf in her hangover state in the next Episode as well as her vunerable, lonely side.

the grand scheme mentioned is slightly different. This is from the novel, but the grand scheme is to discretely "collect the local currency," or the Torenni silver. I think it goes something like this: using this scheme they can counter the exchange rate drop (due to the silver content drop), and then profit after the silver content change actually happens.

My personal favorite of the episode, Weiss trying to "court" Horo. He's such an interesting character. Too bad they had to cut him short (Horo and Lawrence had their mouths rather busy today).

That was really amazing, how Lawrence just ended up completely speechless while Horo raked up cash.
Though should I call Horo's apple trick clever... or cheap... Yare yare, the merchant trade is ferocious...

For the second half, some weirdo playboy called Weiss appears. He hasn't played any real important role yet, but since he is in the ED, he just might. Completely played around by Horo...
And what a surprise, Zeren's little offer ended up being a miss, and it seems to be set up by a bigger force out there that profits from the lie...
Getting exciting there!

Lawrence managed to tease Horo a little at the beginning with the apples.

Blushing/frustrated Horo is good too.

Guess even yearly wisdom can't beat experience all the time.

Agree with your feelings on this one. Was left with a good smile at the end of it. Preview helped adding to that. Having Lawrence move his head in before Horo halted him. Really am curious to find out what is going to happen.

I guess in business it's every wolf for herself. Even if it means pulling a trick like that, if it pays off then good for her. Certainly wasn't making anything up with the strength of the fur I don't believe. It's not a business to be taken lightly. Either you get burned or you pull something on someone else.

Lawrence and Horo still have great dynamics. He plays around with her in regards to the apples. But she has plenty of fun showing how clever she is and getting him jealous. Her responses Weiss guy was fun to follow.

Can't wait for the subs to have a clearer understanding of everything.

One thing I don't get: in all those scenes with Horo not wearing anything, is she supposed to be naked ? Or does she really not have any private parts and its assumed that she is some sort of psuedohuman that only takes the shape of a person but doesn't actually have human "parts" ?

Normally I would just assume its censorship but judging how Lawrence doesn't seem taken back at all during those scenes, it has me puzzled.
