Alex is one of the better god-mode self-inserts I've come across, but he still breaks the rule against fan-created protagonists being more powerful, unique or plot-relevant than the canon characters.

Being the most responsible, mature and sarcastically witty character doesn't help, either. It gets even worse with his "personality" change.

Just about everything you did sets him apart as someone superior to and more important than those around him in every way.

That's a fine thing to do for the main character of an original story, but a poor thing to do in fanfiction where readers come to read about the canonical characters.


As male-deprived as the Nanoha-verse is, Aigis from Persona 3 would have worked much better as a character vehicle for introducing the Persona or SMT verse to Midchilda. Taking Triangle Hearts as canon, Earth certainly has the technology to create intelligent robot-girls. There's also the main character from Persona 4, if he happens to run across Nanoha or her family on Earth.


Finally, there was really no reason to call the book the Azure Grimoire, as it bears absolutely no resemblence to anything from BlazBlue. Especially since the Azure Grimoire is very much NOT a book.

It's also an unnecessary allusion to a third series that you don't actually include in the crossover.

The MC of Persona 4 doesn't even feel like he has a character, given that he never speaks (except choice dialogues) just about... anything. How did girls fall for him was a wonder; especially baffling when they confessed their feelings to him for like a whole minute and he simply sits and watches like a ghost.

She was the one girl I didn't get a confession from. But I'll make the time to find it on youtube.

Goodness knows I'm never actually going to PLAY that game again. The characters and story are great, but I can watch that on Youtube without the irritation of the gameplay or level-grinding.

Try watching Persona 4: The animation... Souji/Yu got dialogs there... deadpan snarker...

Nerf Alex down (or power-up the other characters) and rename his device (I don't play BlazBlue so IDK what you're talking about)...
I kind of wrote this after clearing SMT Strange Journey on Neutral Route... I mean, even soldiers did not stood a chance against demons until they got the Summoning Program.

“… Ah. Fate is spotted on Japan. Fate is seen lurking around the Takamichi household. Fate appears not to notice our surveillance. Fate disappears despite our surveillance. It is impossible to trace where Fate has went. Do you have anything else other than failures to report me?”

"N-no."

Hayate nodded downwards to think. The implications could not be any clearer; Fate was sniffing around Project Future. But does it matter? The hammer has already fallen, and the project ended in almost total success. All that's left was to clean up the aftermath and minor nuisances.

Coldly she commanded, “Now that she has shown herself, we could finally act. Recall all squads and lock down this building before seven. Go.”

Mariel looked flustered and wide-eyed. A few minutes ago Hayate had saw through a camera her friend pacing back and forth in front of her door, a look of uncertainty and self-disgust on her eyes. It was a feeling she knew too well, since she spearheaded the entire project.

“Y – You can’t mean…?”

Hayate positively beamed at Mariel, feeling nothing as her friend recoiled in shock,

“Yes, Mariel. If she is still the Fate I know, I expect her to pay me a visit. Now go.”

Hayate bowed her head to the documents below here and read, no longer caring.

“… You don’t seem surprised.”

Hayate looked up. Her room was dark, but it was impossible to miss the flowing hair of gold that almost illuminated. Then there was the unmistakable feeling of cold steel pressing against her neck. She gazed into the mystifying orbs of red burgundy, and smiled.

“Hello, Fate. How are you doing?”

The blonde looked startled. Then her face crunched into concentration as she tried to say something, “You… I know you, didn’t I? Your name is… Ha… Ha…”

“You are right. Hayate Yagami, at your service.”

Fate muttered the name under her breath, repeating it like a mantra. There was a look of desperation there that almost fascinated Hayate, but she held up her poker face. Bardiche bit deeper into her flesh, and suddenly Fate snarled,

“You’re not Hayate. Don’t use that name, imposter.”

Now that surprised her, “Imposter? Surely your condition has not progressed that far. No, I couldn’t really say that…Why did you think that I’m fake?”

A thin line of blood began to flow downwards. For a moment the blonde looked torn and indecisive, but avoided the question,

“It doesn’t matter, and be quiet. I’ll be the one asking questions.”

“You mean I don’t need to answer?”

“Are you the one who started Project Future?”

Fate looked calm, not even rattled by her jab. Hayate identified unstable mood swings, and thought she should answer, “Yes, I am.”

“Who was the clone?”

“… You didn’t know?”

“Who was it? I've seen her photo, but I can't remember her name. I can, but I can't, I know it, but - Tell me her name!!”

Hayate closed her eyes, and felt the slightest trickle of sadness that ticked in her heart. A little dismay. Then, a little relief.

Perhaps… It would be better if she doesn’t know.

She thought of that lonely grave.

She clicked the button.

A barrier instantly covered the entire Main Office, and her mages crashed down from above the ceiling directly on top of Fate. Caught totally by surprise, Fate didn’t even have time to scream as her people piled their bodies upon her, grappling away her device and forcing her down through sheer number. A second later, ten more mages charged through the door and trained their devices at the captured blonde. Hayate stood up from her seat and enclosed the entire room with another holding barrier, just in case.

“Limiter?”

“Yes, here it is!” She took the device, and walked slowly towards the motionless captive. It was designed to fit easily on someone’s wrist.

Clack.

Hayate stared deeply into those burning red eyes. Her lips moved.

They stayed burning.

Ask yourself why the story needs Alex at all.

There are no fewer than four canonical charaters with the power to summon and control monsters. Caro, Lutecia, Corona, and that little witch girl. The last two in particular seem like good characters to recieve a book that summons demons.

Yuuno Scrya is an even better choice, as he doesn't already have a Device, nor does he already have his own monsters. But he's a good candidate for a book-form Device, and his teleportation powers could make him a great summoner if he found animals willing to obey him.

Why add magic to magic? How is Dia any different from Physical Heal, except in name?

Oh, that was accidental? My apologies. But yes, something called the Azure Grimoire features heavily in the story of BlazBlue, and everyone who knows this is going to assume a connection. Especially anyone who has read the Material Days fanfic, which did in fact feature a Device inspired be and named after it.

I did not play that game, so I don't know if you're talking about normal soldiers or some kind of super soldiers. Did they already have magical attack spells? I'm sure that none of them could summon dragons or bugs or create golems.

Quick Note: This story takes place in the Hayate x Vivio Files, about 6 months before the events of “You Never Lose By Loving.” Vivio is 14 and Hayate is 27 (and Lutecia would be 18).

Ulterior Motives

Vivio Takamachi gritted her teeth, feeling a bead of sweat slide down her temple. Just…a…little…higher…

“Th…Thirty!” Vivio touched her forehead to her knees, feeling the pressure of the padded workout bench behind her knees and in front of her ankles. She exhaled, lowering herself down from her sit-up.

“That’s not what this insignia is,” Lutecia joked, holding up her flash card again just above Vivio’s knees so that the younger girl could see it even as she prepared herself for another set of sit-ups.

“Navy, Second-Lieutenant,” answered Vivio from memory as she laced her fingers behind her head again. She paused. “Hey, thanks again for helping me study for my Military Policies test, Lutecia.”

“How could I not?” teased her purple-haired friend from her seat on a balance ball. The base gym was empty due to the late hour, but late at night was the only time that Vivio and Lutecia could manage to find that worked in both their schedules. Between final exams for Vivio and mass orders of graduation Devices for Lutecia, neither of them had seen much of each other for the last few weeks. Lutecia shuffled Vivio’s note cards. “I need to earn my worth as a best friend, right? Besides, this is fun. It’s a nice refresher.” She held up another card by Vivio’s knees. “This one?”

With a clench of her stomach muscles, Vivio raised herself up, her shirt tightening across her taut back muscles. “Air…Force, Captain,” Vivio identified, panting as she held her position, then lowered her upper body back down. That insignia Vivio knew well—she had spent enough time ironing Nanoha-mama’s uniform jacket, after all.

Honestly, Vivio was glad that it had been an easier question for her to answer, because her nervousness had grown in the last ten minutes, scrambling her thoughts from the present into her approaching conundrum. The repetitiveness of the sit-ups helped with the anxiety, but honestly, if she wanted to ask Lutecia about her problem then she needed to speak up before they both had to go home. While Nanoha trusted Vivio enough to let her go out wherever she wanted even at odd hours, even the White Devil drew a line at letting her fourteen-year-old daughter be wandering about past eleven on a weeknight.

(Hence the reason why Lutecia was helping Vivio study during their hanging-out time: "studying" was a magic word that let Vivio sneakily get away with certain things like curfew during exam season.)

“Um…Lutecia…”

“Yes?”

“Well…”

“…Yes?”

Just spit it out, Vivio! The blonde gulped. “I…need a bit of advice.”

“Oh?” The summoner raised an eyebrow, brushing her long purple locks behind an ear. She shuffled through the cue cards. “Finally, we’re getting somewhere.” Smiling at Vivio’s startled gaping, Lutecia patted Vivio’s shin in amusement. “You’re pretty obvious when you’re stressed about something, you know. So, what’s the problem?”

Vivio stuck her tongue out at her friend, then inhaled as she pulled herself into another series of sit-ups. “You know that…Officer Training Program I…mentioned before?”

“The one at St. Hilde?” Lutecia frowned a bit as she pondered, then nodded. “Oh yes, you’re applying for an internship placement soon, aren’t you?”

Panting as she lowered herself down again, Vivio grunted affirmation.

Lutecia held up another cue card picture.

Vivio crunched into her fifthiest sit-up. “Ground Forces, Colonel.”

“You know all the Ground Forces ones well, huh?” Lutecia teased, her red eyes twinkling.

Don’t react don’t react…aw. Vivio blushed, nearly falling backwards as her stomach muscles shivered. “Yeah, yeah…anyway. Um…I know that I have the grades and the applied skills to go, well, nearly anywhere I want.” It wasn’t as embarrassing admitting such an immodest thing to a best friend; Vita had drilled excessive modesty out of Vivio long ago, claiming that a good warrior who didn’t need to boast didn’t need to put herself down either. “And well, I had gone though my choices a lot over the last month, but…”

After waiting for some time when Vivio fell silent, Lutecia reached over and put a hand on Vivio’s knee. “But?”

“Well, I kind of know which placement I want,” Vivio admitted in a small voice. “But I’m not…not sure it’s the best place for me.” Vivio did another series of sit-ups, the burn in her abdominal muscles vanishing as her nervousness grew.

“And which placement is this?”

Vivio bit her lip. She was so going to get teased. But if she wanted honest advice, then she was going to have to suck it up. “…The Ground Forces Defence Corps Strike team.”

“Defence Corps?” Lutecia repeated, and Vivio could practically see the pieces click together behind her friend’s delicate features. When the lightbulb turned on, Vivio sighed and let herself flop down onto the padded matt resignedly.

Thankfully, Lutecia Alphine was her best friend for a reason. The older girl set the study notes to the side and rolled her balance ball away to sit next to Vivio, sliding closer so that she could peer down at Vivio’s face. “So, one of the places you want to apply to is the Strike Team division under Hayate’s command?” She asked, not a hint of teasing in her tone.

“That’s the thing,” Vivio said miserably, blowing a puff of air through her blonde bangs. “I…well, I don’t want to want that internship just because of Hayate-san, you see?” She kicked her legs out straight, lying sprawled on her back. “I mean, I…you know how I can’t exactly think straight around Hayate-san.” With a small laugh, Vivio rolled her eyes. “Pun sort-of intended.”

“So you’re worried that you’re being biased, and you want to make sure that you’re thinking it out before you jump to a decision?”

“Yes, exactly,” Vivio said eagerly. She rolled onto her stomach and propped herself up on her elbows. “That’s what I need advice for! Do you have any thoughts?”

“Slow down a little,” Lutecia held up a hand, laughing nervously at Vivio’s intensity. “Okay, you have to help me understand how you think first. What other programs would you want to get into, if you weren’t going to try for the GFDC Strike Team?”

Good thing she was prepared for such a question. Vivio shuffled in a pseudo-military crawl on her stomach over to her workout bag, where she pulled out Sacred Heart and tapped him on the head to wake him up. “Kris, display folder “OTP internships” please.”

Three holoscreens immediately appeared in the air. Vivio touched the first one and moved her finger closer to Lutecia, the screen following her movement. “This one is pretty cool. It’s a placement with the Special Investigations Unit, working off-world. I thought about this one because my investigative skills aren’t the greatest compared to my combat skills, so it could be a good chance for me to work on my weaknesses.”

“Sounds nice. Why isn’t it on the top of your list then?”

“Um…lots of things.” Vivio counted off on her fingers. “Firstly, it’s off-world. I don’t really want to get deployed right now…I want to stay at home with Nanoha-mama. It’s hard enough that Fate-mama is away so much—I don’t want to do that to Nanoha-mama as well. And the whole purpose of the internship component of the OTP is ideally for us to make connections in the field that we want to advance in. So it seems kind of wasteful, even if I would learn a lot, to spend a year interning in a division that I probably won’t make a career out of.”

Lutecia scrolled down the page, skimming through the details of the SIU program. “Hm, yes, I see what you mean. You still haven’t decided yet what you want to do, Vivio?”

“No,” Vivio moped, playing with the ends of her ponytail. That was the stock question that she kept getting asked in the last year, and it was both annoying and panic-inducing at the same time. “How did you decide to become a Device Meister?”

“There wasn’t much to do on uninhabited worlds,” Lutecia deadpanned, and laughed when Vivio socked her in the shoulder. “Ow! I actually really don’t know, Vivio. I think I was just good at it, and it was really interesting. And I love seeing new partnerships begin, so I think I just went with it when I found that I could do it well.” She playfully shoved Vivio back. “And how about you? Other than becoming a pugilist, what would you want to do?”

“I’m not going to become a professional boxer,” complained Vivio, pulling the other holoscreens over. “Geez, when you win one tournament…Anyway, other than doing something with the military, which is a given, I’m open to nearly anything at this point.”

“Why so adamant about the military?” Lutecia asked, somewhat seriously. “You’re really good with sociology and history too—it’s not like you couldn’t find yourself a good job outside of the TSAB.”

Vivio laughed softly, sighing. “It’s in the family blood. Besides, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I had to stand on the side and watch everyone we know fight to protect what we love, and I couldn’t help. If I’m going to do it anyway, I might as well make a living from it, huh?”

“I think that’s what Nanoha-san said when she found out that she can legally blow things up often as an instructor.”

They burst out laughing, giggling at the thought.

“Okay, what’s another one?” Lutecia gestured at the digital applications.

“This one is pretty cool—it’s a Forward position with Battalion 108. I could work with Subaru’s dad! The internship would be mostly drilling and learning combat tactics though, from what I know of the Battalion’s mandate, but they have a lot of cool specialist programs that they’re offering. So even though I won’t actually do a lot of real combat I’ll still be sparring and learning about leading squads and stuff like that.” Vivio minimized her half-completed application form so that Lutecia could look at the program’s official information package. She started stretching to touch her toes as she waited for Lutecia to finish forming an opinion of her own as her friend speed-read through the documents. “I’ll have to move to the barracks, but it’s still close to Cranagan. It’s pretty tempting—I really like their explosives training!”

Lutecia started laughing even harder, until she was nearly choking. “Oh my—like…mother…like daughter!”

“Hey!” Vivio blushed and indignantly kicked the balance ball over to have it bop Lutecia in the side. “It’s technical training!”

Lutecia wiped her mirthful tears away and slid the screen back over to Vivio. “Right. So, what’s wrong with this one?”

“Well…that’s the thing. There’s not a whole lot wrong with this one, per se…” Vivio ducked her head, then motioned the last holoscreen over. “I’m just, well…it’s a toss-up between the Strike Team and Battalion 108, really. That’s why I’m so worried; Lutecia-chan, I’m worried that I’m leaning toward the Strike Team just because I’d get to work with her!” To her horror, Vivio felt her eyes start to sting with confused emotion.

Oh no, she couldn’t cry over something like this! It was utterly silly and humiliating.

“Hey, hey!” Lutecia rubbed the blonde’s back in comforting circles. “Hey, Vivio, it’s okay. Don’t feel bad. It’s a good thing that you’re thinking so carefully about this.”

“I really want to,” Vivio confessed, wiping at her eyes. “There’s only one opening a year for interns, and they get dozens of applications. And, well…” She hesitated. Lutecia had never teased her about her crush on Hayate as much as Caro and the others, but still, Vivio could tell that Lutecia was only indulging her whenever Vivio went on and on about how she felt for Hayate.

How could she explain the level of her burning desire to have the chance to spend weeks and months working closely with Hayate? She had read up on all the reports and public files about the Strike Team and what they did, and watched all the PR releases Hayate—Lt. General Yagami—had given about the relatively new unit in her official capacity as the Capital Defence Corps Commander, always dreaming about somehow getting a chance to work there despite her young age. Vivio couldn’t think of anything she had ever wanted more in her life.

And that was exactly the problem.

Vivio would be so ashamed of herself if she made such an important decision for her life and career simply because of a silly childhood fancy. So really, all she needed was for Lutecia to tell her that Vivio was indeed being foolish, and that would give Vivio the small push she needed to move past dreaming into more realistic things.

“But yeah, the Strike Team internship doesn’t cover as many topics as the Battalion Forward position. It’s a lot more like a real job, since eventually you’d be on call for missions and such. There’s a lot more real fighting, but I don’t even know if I want to go that kind of team-specialist route.” Vivio shrugged, her tone offhand. She ground a heel against the mat, downcast. “I mean…I admit that the only reason it stayed on my list for so long was because it was a CDC position working out of Hayate-san’s building.”

“I see,” Lutecia remarked, crossing her arms.

“Yeah,” mumbled Vivio, reaching to shut down the Strike Team application screen. “It’s a lot clearer how silly it is once I said it out loud, thanks for—”

“Hey, hold on a minute,” Lutecia scowled, grabbing onto Vivio’s wrist. “I didn’t actually say anything yet, so don’t jump to conclusions.”

“Sorry…”

“So, the only reason you looked at the Strike Team internship was because of Hayate?”

“Well, not the only reason, but—”

“What else?”

“Huh?” blinked Vivio.

“What other reasons?” Lutecia persisted, looking awfully intimidating even while sitting cross-legged on a blue practice mat and wearing grungy workout clothes.

“Uh…” Vivio stammered, confused. “It sounded…cool?”

“That’s it? Cool?”

“No! They do a lot of fighting, but it’s really urban, compared to military campaigns. You know how much I like using Strike Arts rather than bombardment attacks, so this seemed like an interesting placement to develop my Strike Arts skills. And it’s a relatively new program in the CDC itself, so I’ll be likely to get promoted faster or get a command position during my internship year rather than have to wait until I graduate.” She felt herself stumbling over words as she nervously tried to blurt out all the other reasons before Lutecia’s aggressive interrogation and expectant stare. “And yeah, it’s close to home so I can stay at the house with Nanoha-mama…and, um…”

“So why are you so hard on yourself?”

“I…what?”

Lutecia leaned forward and patted Vivio’s shoulder. “Those were a lot of really good reasons why you should consider applying for the Strike Team internship. It sounds like either the Strike Team or Battalion 108 would be great placements for you, Vivio.”

“I…I guess…” Vivio paused, then smiled, feeling her mood shift from dejected to amazed. “…Yeah. Thanks, Lutecia-chan.”

“Anything for my best friend.” Lutecia bounced up to sit on her balance ball again, scooping up Vivio’s study notes with one hand. “You’ll do just fine. Hey, it’s a long internship—you might as well be happy at what you’re doing, and happy with the people you’re working with, right?”

A corner of Vivio’s lips twitched as she turned onto her knees, lowering herself down and ready to count push-ups. “Yeah. Thanks, I’m glad I off-loaded on you, Lutecia-chan. It’s really helped me make it all make sense.”

Yes, it all made sense now.

“Good luck—even though I know you’ll get anything you want. You’re a stubborn Takamachi, after all!” Lutecia grinned, and drew a card from the face-down note deck of military insignias. “Back to studying…”

She held it up.

Vivio smiled. “Ground Forces, Lieutenant-General.”

While I struggle though school and finishing up the insanely emotional “Prerogative of the Brave” Chapters 6 and 7, I thought that I’d write a bit more about Vivio’s life and thoughts separate from the whole romance thing =) (it’s only fair, since Hayate’s gotten a few stories of her own for that!).

I have no clue if Vivio actually does the laundry/irons clothes in her house, but I liked the joke ^_^. Not to mention it lets me get a gag into one of my currently-unfinished-HxV Files-stories! =)

Oh, and of course, Nanoha totally knows Vivio’s lame teenager tricks =P. As a teenager, Vivio is clearly unaware of that fact ^_-.

Nice addition DC, it's really nice that we get a little flesh out about Vivio's relationship with the other ppl around her. Makes our universe a little less of a raging emotionfiest and more like an actual, well, world where this pairing could happen =D. I've been wanting to give Lutecia a little nod now and then but I'm finding it extremely hard to write her because RB sort of ninja'd her characterization for all eternity, so go you! I'll just stick with the... really awkward humor.

And no, I have no plans of writing a sisterfic for this regarding Viv's later plans to go mage-SEAL xD. Thou, that had make for a good story too.

Arisa grimaced softly. "It's not exactly... Well, cool." Vrabazard just blinked at the term and Arisa sighed heavily. "It means that it's not something that I'd like as a name." Vrabazard just nodded and decided to ignore it, humans were weird. "One thing's been bugging me... How come Yuuno's clothes didn't start to burn off but mine did?"

Vrabazard gave Arisa a flat look. "I may be a Shinzoku, but I do enjoy the sight of a naked woman more than a naked man." He blinked when Arisa seemed to fall over in mid-air and nearly hit the lava. "You sure you want to take a dip?"

"GAH!" Arisa floated upwards and grabbed her head. "I think that Thoth's personality isn't just his programming! UGH!" Glaring at the Shinzoku, she pointed a finger at him. "You know what? You could at least play fair!" Vrabazard blinked at her. "If you're going to burn my shorts off just to get a look at my underwear, then why not..." Arisa trailed off as she tried to think of the first thing that came to her mind, "why don't you burn his clothes off?!"

"WHAT?!" Yuuno yelped at Arisa, who was blushing hard.

Before Arisa could say anything, Vrabazard shrugged and snapped his fingers. "Fine." The way that Yuuno and Arisa both started blushing as the blonde male ended up naked in mid-air was rather amusing, more-so since Yuuno seemed to lose all mental functions and was unable to move or react right away.

It took her several moments of outright gaping at Yuuno's fully naked body before her mind finally started working properly again. "GAH!" Arisa slapped her hands over her eyes. "Sorry! Put some clothes back on him!" She thought he was good looking with just his shirt off, but seeing what he had down below was really, "GAH!" She was going to have trouble getting that image out of her head for awhile. And did it have to be so... "GAH!" Arisa felt like banging her head against a wall. She was not mentally trying to figure out just how big Yuuno was from what she saw.

When Yuuno's clothes rematerialized over his body, he turned to glare at Vrabazard. "Did you have to do that?"

"Dunno, boss, I think the girls might like a picture of you naked."

"WHO'S SIDE ARE YOU ON?!" Yuuno usually wasn't this bad off, but considering what just happened, his mind was a bit out of whack. It probably didn't help matters any when Thoth said those things.

Vrabazard chuckled heavily and looked at the two. "As amusing as this is, are you two done here? I'd rather not have anyone at my lair right now."

Arisa took a deep breath and tried to get her blushing face to calm down, before slowly turning to the Shinzoku. "Actually, I was wondering, how come I can only do so little with my power?"

Vrabazard blinked and floated over to her and narrowed his eyes as he looked at her more closely. "What do you mean, so little? Holy magic should be natural to you. You might need to learn how to hold back, but you should be able to do anything you want with it." He pointed at Yuuno. "Unlike him, you were born with this power, you should be able to use it anyway you want."

"I wish." Arisa sighed and floated backwards and crossed her arms under her breasts. "But, it's hard. Every time I try to use more than just some weapons out of elemental energy, it's like I..." She blinked as she felt a hand on her head. "What are you..?"

"Hmm..." Vrabazard's eyes were glowing as he looked at Arisa more closely. "There was a seal on you... Seems to be connected not only to your Holy power, but to your memories." Arisa blinked, before her eyes went wide as memories started to flood her mind. "...How tragic."

"I... I..." Arisa's eyes rolled up into her head as she passed out from the memory overload.

"What happened?" Yuuno floated over to Arisa and took her from the Shinzoku.

"Memories..." Vrabazard told him. "Of a terrible tragedy that happened before she ever met you or that girl, Nanoha. Her power first awakened... To save her life, but it left her scarred and tormented from it."

Yuuno just blinked in confusion at the Shinzoku. "Um..."

"She'll have to tell you. As for you," Vrabazard snapped his fingers and Yuuno felt himself disappearing from the lair, "leave this place for now, my knight. Come back some other time."

GAH!

Yuuno blinked as he looked around. "Where are we?" He would have moved to find out, but Arisa had such a death grip on his body that he wondered if she suddenly became an octopus with the way she was clinging to him. "Arisa?" He sighed as she trembled softly while hugging him. "What are you..." He trailed off as he heard some laughter.

"Well, well, well!" Yuuno groaned as a bunch of dirty, incredibly dirty and burned bandits, walked out from behind the trees. "How touching. If I was feeling in the mood, I might let'cha live... But..." The man twitched as he looked at Yuuno. "...Is anyone else feeling that odd feeling of death?"

"Boss, after being blown up by that spell, I think we're all feeling it." A tall and bald man in incredibly damaged clothing spoke up and looked at the group, though, now that Yuuno took a closer look, it seemed like there was only about four of them, and all of them were moving rather slow and painfully. "Still, I doubt he can do much with her pressing herself to him."

The boss grinned as he looked at Yuuno and Arisa. "After what happened near Sellentia, I'm rather upset, so... Just hand over the girl nice and quiet like and we'll let ya have some fun when we burn off some frustration."

Yuuno wasn't great with illusions. He never tried to be, as illusion magic, real illusion magic, was a fairly rare skill to have. Anyone could make simple projections with their magic and change their bodies, but true illusion wasn't something that everyone had. Despite that, he somehow managed to make his eyes glow a bright red and his hair started to float upwards. "...What. Did. You. Say?"

"Uh... Boss, I think that talking about using that girl to get off was a bad idea."

"I'll say, hey boss, why don't you show them what a pin ball feels like?"

"Not a bad idea." Yuuno nodded as Thoth Driver shifted from its wrist-watch standby mode to its active mode, the display screen enlarged to the size of the back of his hand while a data pad with buttons formed, jutting out away from his fingers and down his arm. Despite becoming much larger, Thoth's active form, minus the screen, was about the size of a standard wallet. The screen just looked like an old-style magnifying glass.

"Uh, what?" The bandits suddenly got nervous as a green circle appeared under Yuuno and the ground began shaking. "Run!" The remaining bandits, despite hurting all over, turned to flee.

They got two steps before something wrapped around their ankles. Looking down, the bandits all turned blue in the face as green chains were squeezing tight and causing them to fall to the ground.

"Now then..." Yuuno growled out as the chains pulled, sending the bandits flying into the air before a giant array appeared in front of them. "Let's see how long it takes for you guys to break the speed of sound."

"Huh?" The bandits had no idea what Yuuno was talking about as they found themselves flying into the array and disappearing, only to reappear several feet away, flying through the air, the chains no longer on their ankles as they soared towards a large tree. Yelling in fear, they sighed as the tree seemed to disappear, only to scream as another tree appeared in front of them, even faster this time.

"Wow, you must be mad boss, never saw a teleportation matrix to bounce people off of the trees at increasing speeds."

Yuuno grinned darkly as he heard the bandits yelling for him to stop. "Stop?" He chuckled darkly as he stood up, Arisa still in his arms. "You wouldn't stop even if she told you to. Why should I stop? Huh?!"

"Boss, you need to..."

"What? Calm down?! I'm sick and..."

Before he could finish that statement, there was a cracking sound and he found himself on his butt. "...Arisa?"

She was looking at him, frowning. "Don't make me hit you with the air again. You aren't like this, Yuuno, calm down."

"But..." Before Yuuno could say anything more, Arisa, her face red, leaned in and put her lips to his. Yuuno's eyes widened in shock as she did that.

While Arisa was kissing Yuuno, an array appeared on Thoth's screen. Several moments later, the bandits found themselves slamming into a net that appeared out of nowhere.

Arisa pulled her head back, her face completely crimson. "I don't do that very much, Yuuno. But you aren't a killer. Don't act like one to thugs." She pulled herself away from Yuuno and stood up, her face was practically lighting the area up. "...But thanks for standing up for me."

"I'm going to be..." The bandit leader groaned as the holding net swayed in the air. "...I think I don't want to be a bandit anymore."

"And I thought it was bad when we got Dragon Slave'd..." The taller bandit groaned out painfully.

The four bandits watched as Yuuno stood up and followed Arisa out of the clearing silently. "Um..." The leader spoke up, sounding fearful and cringing as Yuuno looked up at him. "Can you let us down?" Yuuno snapped his fingers and the binds disappeared, causing the bandits to fall to the ground painfully.

"Let's go." Arisa said softly as she and Yuuno left the bandits in the forest, crying in pain.

An hour later...

The sun was starting to sink into the western skies before Arisa growled and spun around, glaring at Yuuno. "GAH! I can't stand this!" She walked up to the sullen teen and grabbed his shoulders. "What the hell was wrong with you back there?!"

"They..." Yuuno looked away from Arisa, remembering her lips on his.

"...If you don't tell me right now, Yuuno, I'm going to give you a noogie while my hand is on fire!" Arisa smirked as Yuuno jumped back, alarmed. "Now talk!"

"After what happened near Sellentia, I'm rather upset, so... Just hand over the girl nice and quiet like and we'll let ya have some fun when we burn off some frustration."

Arisa blinked as Thoth played back the conversation, before nodding slowly. "...Oh."

"Yeah, I just... The thought of them..." Before Yuuno could continue, he found himself on his back with Arisa hugging him. "...You okay?"

"Ugh... Headache..." She then narrowed her eyes at Yuuno. "Thanks, jerk, you made me wake up from a nap too soon and made me use my power before I could sort out those memories!" Before Yuuno could say anything, Arisa hugged him tightly. "Thanks for that, they weren't fun memories."

Yuuno just blinked and decided to hug her back without saying anything.

When Hayate got into work that morning, the first thing she noticed was the DNA test results sitting on her office desk. She noted that it had only been 24 hours since a sample had been submitted by that woman the day before when she visited the base to give her account of events on Vaizen so that the case for her son could be reopened.

None of the other paperwork seemed as important as she reviewed the DNA results many times on that morning. If there had been any doubts about that woman being an imposter, they were blown away with the fact that her genetic code matched Vivio’s for the most part with the odds of error being less than 0.001 percent.

As she exited her office to go for lunch a few hours later, her mind drifted to the last question that needed answering. She had been aware that it was being looked into by Yuuno.

“Hayate-san!” And speaking of Yuuno, there he was now just coming down the corridor to meet her.

“Good day, Yuuno-kun. How are you doing?”

He stopped when he caught up to her. “I’m fine. I was wondering about your family though since with all that happened…”

“They’re doing well. Vita-chan’s still miffed about what happened the day before yesterday while Signum and Shamal are just going about as normal. I can’t tell what Zafira thinks about all this but it’s hard for me to imagine him getting bothered by anything that doesn’t concern my safety. I guess as long as Olivie’s willing to let things stay settled as they are now, he won’t have any issues.”

Yuuno nodded. “I see.”

“You’re looking a little stressed there. You okay?” asked the young lady out of concern.

“No… yes? Maybe…” He rubbed his forehead. “Well, it’s related to what you asked me to look into regarding…”

“Ah, right.” Hayate gave a small smile. “In that case, how about we talk about it over lunch?”

By the time they grabbed their food and an empty table, Yuuno seemed to have gathered his thoughts together. “So regarding the question you wanted me to investigate… when I thought about it some more, I determined that the best source of information on cloning would be the architect behind Project Fate so I paid a visit to Jail Scaglietti.”

“I would imagine he wasn’t very co-operative,” replied the young woman before taking a sip from her noodle soup.

“Well, I approached him under the guise of wanting to ensure that the records regarding Project Fate were fully complete and thorough. After appealing to his pride as a scientist, he gave me a few answers. Specifically, the names of other members in the scientific community who took a strong interest in the Project. From there, I had Verossa look into those who had enough knowledge about the project to create perfect clones and once we narrowed that list down, the last thing to check was whether those scientists could have had access a blood sample from the Kaiser.”

“But I thought only the Shroud of the Saint King had blood samples.”

“It’s the only KNOWN source of blood samples,” pointed out the Librarian. “There was a possibility of another source so we had to look into that. But we didn’t find any such samples among those who were on our list. Honestly, this is bringing to mind that phrase used by that Sherlock Holmes character.”

“Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable it may seem, must be the truth?” supplied Hayate.

“That’s it. We’ve essentially eliminated the possibility of Olivie being a clone. She’s the real thing… and therefore…” He trailed off as his right hand twitched in excitement.

She figured out where he was heading fairly quickly. “Are you saying…?”

“Time. Travel. EXISTS! The Kaiser is living proof of the concept! Do you understand what this means?” asked Yuuno in an excited tone.

“Um… it means that I’ll be having bigger headaches trying to deal with time paradoxes? Or perhaps I’ll be arguing with my future self on the type of woman that you need?”

He blinked once upon hearing that last part. “Uh… what?”

Hayate laughed nervously. “Ah, forget about it! Anyways, you were saying?”

Yuuno’s confused expression vanished quickly as his mind went back to the idea. “This opens up a brand new field of science and exploration! With time travel, we can go back to the times of Ancient Belka and Al-Hazard! Get answers to unsolved mysteries such as how a world like Galea became lost. And an extra bonus to all this is how I can go up to Chrono and tell him that he was wrong about time travel being impossible! But…”

“But…?”

“At the same time, the world of time travel brings a great amount of danger. If someone travelled back in time, any change in events that occur in the past could have a catastrophic event in the future. The worst part is that if someone did successfully change the past, nobody in the future would be aware of it. A whole new field of law enforcement dedicated to protecting the timeline would have to be created to prevent anyone else from going back in time to manipulate the past for their own gain. They would probably have to be isolated from the ongoing timeline in order to retain their memories and do their jobs properly.”

“You’re thinking about it too much, Yuuno-kun!” Honestly, Hayate could easily see why he was so flustered with what he just discovered.

“With time travel, historians and archaeologists have a valuable tool to verify events of the past and uncover answers regarding historic mysteries and Lost Logia but at the same time, it is a tool that could affect the present and the future in many uncertain ways.” He sighed once as he picked his food. “Is the very thing we yearn for the one thing we should never obtain?”

“Just because there’s a proof of concept doesn’t mean we’ll crack open the mechanics of time travel right away.”

“At the very least, we should set up something like a Temporal Investigation department,” said Yuuno.

“Are you expecting a huge influx of time travellers now?” teased the young woman.

He let out a small chuckle before taking a bite out of his meal. “I guess not…”

“Be sure to carve these words into your heart, young man! I’m only going to say this once!”

“… Okay?” Sheesh, this female Student Council President really was passionate about things here. Then again, Touma should have figured that out earlier considering how her braided red hair whirled about furiously with each gesture she made.

“Hard work and raw courage are the keys to success at St. Hilde! They are the ingredients to create miracles in tough times!”

“You’ll have to forgive my older sister. She’s really passionate about the idea of hard work and effort being able to achieve anything,” said the other occupant in the room, a young lady with long pink hair and a little flower clip attached to her white and red headband.

“It’s not an idea! It’s a truth! With enough hard work and a pure focus, one can reach any goal they set. From making it to the school or job of your dreams…” She paused for dramatic emphasis. “… To toppling God herself.”

Before he could wonder about that last bit, the other girl got his attention. “In any case, I reviewed your test results, Touma-kun. I have an idea on which areas we’ll be focusing on in the next few weeks to help you get caught up to the school curriculum.”

The boy smiled a bit. “In that case, I look forward to your tutelage, Kyrie-sempai! Amitie-sempai!”

“Don’t you worry, Touma-kun,” purred the pink haired girl as she patted him on the head. “We’ll take good care of you.”
