Lucky Star - Manga Discussion Thread
Since Kyoto Animation is doing this series it has created abnormally high interest in this 4Koma strip. Sleeping Forest is now releasing this series as we speak and are up to chapter 3. In case nobody is sure of what 4Koma is, it is a gag strip style comic in the vein of the funny pages you see in your local newspaper where clever inside jokes lead to an inevitable punchline that will often have you nodding your head. This one has been labelled moe for some reason when really its just random. Actually the first chapter has Kona-Chan trying to figure out the best way to eat a Chocalate Roll. It's very bizarre.

Read this about 4koma manga and where it gets serialized: 4koma and the Media
Also Eval Powar scanlated the first 2 chapters of the manga. Links to some of the torrents are here: Manganews. Well, if the torrents aren't working then go to their IRC channels :P

Like I said in the other thread, I didn't find the first two chapters all that funny. Though, I am still willing to give this manga a chance.

The first few chapters of the manga... you can tell the author is trying to get his footing and figure out what he wants to do with the series (very common problem). It starts hitting its stride later in the first volume.
As far as writing the author, visit the websites for contact information? You'll probably need to be able to write in Japanese. The few manga authors I've written to were terrible at English (though I apparently entertained them with my abysmal japanese).

Since a show has been made baed on the mange, odds are at least one of them will be able to understand English. For anime still only in Japanese, I put "This message is in English" on the envelope or first line of the email. Occasionally I even get a response from a personal translator. One time I actually found a voice actress who knows English. The manga will be tougher but I would be willing to bet the price of foriegn postage (or the price of an email) that they have a translator.

Just curious, why would you think any of the staff or the author is very good at english "because they have a show"?
You do know where the subtitles in the fansubs come from, right? (pardon me if that sounds insulting but I'm not following your logic) Considering the slim budget anime productions run on, its rather unlikely that they'll have trained translators on staff since they don't do English translations. Manga-ka are even less likely to have access to a translator and must rely on their sometimes rusty english skills. Most japanese have a considerable amount of english classwork under their belt --- but the quality of that education is very iffy and they don't get much chance to practice it, so expecting fluency in English may be a bit much (especially for adults long out of school). Not saying not to try writing ... but they'd appreciate any attempt to write in their native language rather than expecting them to know english, especially since one is writing to them about an anime or manga that is in japanese. I usually provide both English and Japanese to double the chances I'll be understood and it gives them a chance to practice as well (if they're interested).

Anyways, I'd think most Japanese people would get a kick out of an American trying to write to them in Japanese, and I'm sure they're really appreciate it. So why not try out some nihongo? |

No need to go as far as fluent English. If someone has a basic understanding of the language I can make do. What I meant was having a show would make them more likely to have a translator, not increase their knowlege of the English language. A response for this meaning has also been given. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is an extreme case and not an anime but I have gotten responses to letters and email written in English so I know it can be done. Writing in Japanese is good advice. The little Japanese I know is limited mostly to the word and phrases I have picked up watching anime but I suppose I do know enough Japanese for a catch phrase.

Does anyone know the gender of the creator? Kagami strikes me as a female sort of name, but the wiki entry on Yoshimizu Kagami uses male pronouns.
The look of the characters also remind me of Hidamari Sketch, another manga drawn by a female artist. |

A guy named Kagami is somewhat like being named Francis or Marion (both gender switchable names). However, I've not seen a pic or clip of the artist ... who draws themself as a round blobby kitty. I'd like to think it was female (just because I like seeing a distribution of people types in any profession).
(continues the hunt...)

It seems that he's male. They are referring to him with "he". If someone can read Japanese can he check the Japanese version of wiki? If going on the art counts for anything I would say he's male. The are female artist doing shounen though(ecchi no less). :O |

I'm not sure I trust that wikipedia entry for the answer. There is almost no biographic data (not even a birthday) and the link which is supposed to be for Yoshimizu-sensei's personal site is not. (The artwork is not up to Yoshimizu's standards and the only Lucky Star link is to a doujinshi.)
My guess is the use of the male pronoun in the wiki is because most English writers insist on using gender specific pronouns and use male pronouns by default. Without seeing a picture or the kanji Yoshimizu uses for Kagami, I'm withholding judgment on Yoshimizu's gender. |

One question about the manga. Some of my friends here are saying that there's a vol.5 already. I have'nt seen the cover on amazon or the official site. Are my friends just pulling a fast one on me or THERE is a vol.5 already out there or in the works? Just curious...
Spoiler:

There is almost certainly one in the works.... but the volumes are released about every 6-12 months. The last one was published in April so I'd expect to wait til next winter??? Amazon.co.jp isn't showing anything yet.
I'll assume you mean fashion or art style loli since they're 17
