I like to make another note on grave of the fireflies, it was actually based on a semi-autobiographical novel written by a man who survived the war on the homefront, but whose younger sister died of starvation while in his care.

sad anmie
Just off the top of my head:
Now and Then, Here and There - The creator did a lot of research for this show on the different wars around the world, specifically on the plight of child soldiers. Very Very intense. Vampire Princess Miyu TV: not excatly sad but very depressing. Narutaru - only watch the frist 6 eps but form what i heard of the rest of the series very depressing, very sad and very intense. Violinst of Hamelin - I think Ep 6 had the last joke in the 25 Ep series. The series just get more bloody, sad and depressing down to the last ep. A lack of animenation might put some ppl of though, but the story is top notch. |

I never tried to remember which director did which film. I think there are a few which both of them worked together and I can't recall the names as well. Sorry if I offended any Takahata fans. Think next time I should do some research before I talk. |

Oh, don't forget Princess Tutu. Although it might not seem obvious at first, that show is very deep and sad at times--it's a fairy tale, yes, but something more along the lines of the dark and sad fairy tales of Tchaikovsky then the whitewashed ones of today.

One that i really liked and that no one has mentioned is Chinese Ghost Story.
Grave of the Fireflies is a classic by every sense of the word. It has won numerous awards and gained must appraise by critics everywhere including America. Many people get it confused that Miyazaki didn't do this work, however it is listed under his name on the dvd and even posted on his website, he did have a hand in its creation so techniquely it is by him and his studio. Narutaru might be a bit too much for his girlfriend, i just finished the series 2 days ago and must say that, that anime is really f-ing messed up. Eps 10-13 really get disturbing and are nothing like the 1st 8-9 episodes. Some really messed up stuff happens to those school kids like testtube rape and death. Kite i would definitely not show your girlfriend. It's very violent and has heavy sexual themes and child rape. The uncut is even worse, it shows graphic sex and child rape. Stay far away from that one w/your girlfriend. |

If your looking for an anime thats in line with Saikano in the sad/suffocating sense then I second Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and Grave of the Fireflies. Full Moon wo Sagashite also has the right stuff in the sadness department but be forewarned; most of it doesnt show itself near the start of the series

Try Gungrave. Just finish watching it and you'll definitely feel a lot of pain. Trust me on this. Gungrave will be the only anime I'm never gonna watch the second time. Its nice but the whole story is just too dramatic and tragic.
