Ep. 4 definitely felt rushed, but on the other hand, the whole plot with the organization and the implications of some sort of underground conflict between a military organization and those monsters does at least give the possibility things might get interesting. Yes, I know about the basic plot of the VN (even if I haven't read/played/whatever you do with a VN it), but I'm going to avoid mentioning it because spoilers.

Also Kagari seriously needs to work on her communication skills, and more dialogue that makes me hopeful for an Oppai Route OVA.

Episode 5:

Well this episode gave some background story about Lucia...although I feel that it was pretty rushed in general. I did like their character chemistry on most parts though as Tennouji shows that he is there to support her as a friend.

The whole thing about the curse and Guardian is also revealed as well. In the meantime, I guess the episode did some decent job at capturing Lucia's emotional expressions.

*Sigh* I know they had to make changes in order not to make Lucia's "arc" incompatible with the rest of the heroine routes/general plot but... this is really too much.
Past the very bland and tame execution of the Asahi Haruka investigation, the lack of scenes for Lucia (especially the missing parfait showdown) completely waters down the backstory explanations. The revelations sound like an afterthought instead of a powerful, borderline soulcrushing, breakdown.

And as expected, the transition between Shizuru and Lucia's arcs is nearly inexistent, with just the mention "ho wait, you mean the same organization?" stuff. I'm not even sure what to think about the ending considering it screams like a heroine route conclusion, but arguably doesn't match the end of the episode. This is probably my own bias regarding Lucia, but that's a major short end of a stick right there.

Like com_gwp, I didn't even expect the heroine routes to be adapted due to the fact they planned an "original arc". Considering their respective backstory, adapting all of them without a 2 cour budget (so accounting a third cour for the sixth route and conclusion) was just madness. Rewrite is longer than LB, and LB sometimes struggled with its pacing despite the 3 cours schedule.
But this? I really wish they could just be done with "that character" and "some" characterization for the other heroines to avoid such mess.

*Sigh* 1 heroine route ep is just the worst.

Haven't read the VN, but I heard Lucia's route is written by Ryukishi07, whose specialty is psychological horror stuff. Too bad the anime couldn't do it justice. I'm guessing the plan is to blitz through the heroines' stories and go straight to the "true ending". Those kinds of anime adaptations are never great...

The scale suddenly became a little big.
So let me guess, Kotarou is the so-called Key? (so meta )

Episode 5

So we get some background on Lucia. She's cursed. Whatever she touches rots away and dies. She had a pretty sad story and whatever. But I honestly don't see myself caring about her enough. Same goes for Shizuru. I couldn't care less about either girls. Their depressing backgrounds aren't working for me at all. I could care a bit about Kotori and Chihaya (mainly because I suspect her butler of being the one who saved Koutaro a couple of episodes back), but not really that much so far. Looking forward to find out about the ribbon loli and Koutaro.

Anyway, they did explain some stuff about the world here. That sensei is part of an organization, Guardian, which gathers kids with special powers like Lucia and Shizuru to save the world from being blown up. There's something about the Key who can be used to destroy the world or whatever. And Koutaro is getting involved deeply in this neko. And that ribbon loli could be the Key especially considering there were people chasing her a couple of episodes back. And what was up with the two girls holding weapons in the end? Having the power to rewrite stuff and the ability to make things rot upon touching also come with fighting skills? That ending bit felt extremely weird. What was more weird was how they gave this episode a different ED. Was this episode's event very important to the overall story or something? No one answer that question because it'd be a spoiler...

Didn't really care much for Lucia's route in the VN so this episode didn't do much for me either. However the pacing is horrible, as expected.

I felt the trainwreck coming when I saw the anime announced for 1 cour only, but part of me was relieved when I heard they'd go for "that girl's" original route instead...
...sadly they decided to animate all the other routes anyway, with these results.

I don't think I'll keep insulting the memory of that wonderful VN by continuing to watch this adaptation.

8-bit you can go fuck yourselves for thinking this is possible in 13 episodes and yes I glanced enough of ep 5 to know where it's going. Key you can go fuck yourselves for considering the same thing. I liked Shizuru very much (her voice really helps) but having the one eps per girl backstory DOES NOT WORK especially in the span of 13 episodes. Did Kanon 2002 teach you anything, and even that shit had 2 episodes for the best girl. And all kinds of bad ecchi jokes are great when time is limited? Not.

This is becoming the worst Key anime ever, although I suppose I never finished Charlotte so there's that. I guess? I suppose unlike Charlotte, I like the characters, but there's no way I can watch it like this.

Please remake this in 4 years or some shit.

Yeah. I hope you ass holes who ragged on JC Staff during Little Busters endlessly can truly appreciate what a train wreck of an adaption actually looks like now. 8bit quickly hit my shitlist for one of the worst studios in the industry right now. The adaptions of Grisaia and this are HORRIBLE.

Dropped and never coming back.

You can keep blaming 8bit and director all you want but those who decide the length of anime are the producers. It was the same with Grisaia no Kajitsu where director and writers had to limit themselves because Frontwing producer decided that 13 episodes would be enough for that adaptation.

this chapter just make me want the game more, I need to still wait for rewrite+, I don't want to play the original because I know that the end of kotori route so I'll wait for the complete version. I'm enjoying this anime maybe because I didn't finish the VN.

I think if Clannad had one episode only for every heroine, the reaction will be the same as what's going on here.

Even though I never read the VN, it was obvious that key plot points were being rushed to its ending. And the result is not pretty.

A thought on studio 8-bit and VN adaptations. Now I have not played the full VNs, so maybe I'm not qualified to talk, but based on observations of the anime, online chatter, and scenes from the VN I have seen, here are my thoughts on Grisaia, tying in also to Rewrite. I thought Grisaia no Kajitsu was rushed in its plot, a problem Grisaia no Rakuen did not have, possibly because while Grisaia no Kajitsu has five girls routes, Rakuen, in essence can almost be considered "Yuuji's route". Essentially, Kajitsu goes into the backstory and psychological issues of the all five girls, and the anime that into 13 episodes. On the other hand, Rakuen focuses mostly on Yuuji himself, and one person's story is more easily fit into 12 episodes.

Rewrite is clearly more like Kajitsu than Rakuen, having multiple routes for multiple characters, and once again, studio 8-bit is cramming all of these into 13 episodes (although in ths case, according to this thread, Rewrite and Grisaia's developers mandated a 13-episode format). Now, that's not to say you can't do a well-written multi-character series in 13 episodes, however, many examples of this were written from the ground up as anime, Madoka Magica being an example of such a story type. When writing an original anime, you can control the pacing more to make it not seem rushed. when adapting a VN or other longer source material, you are forced to cram a large amount of material into a smaller time frame, thus making it diffiult to pace properly. Of course, pacing can be a problem in original anime if not done properly- I'm looking at you Charlotte.

The one thing I will say about the Rewrite anime is that, as a non-player of the VN, it does get me interested in playing the VN to see more of these characters backstories.

Finished watching Episode 5 and I was wondering if Haruka Asahi was all made up by Lucia Konohana? Still, it's interesting to see that Koutarou's powers as well as Shizuru and Lucia are involved in a grander scheme of things regarding the Earth's destruction.

It feels like galgame adaptations done 10 years ago that you get a bit of every girl's route. That's not a good way, but the execution is at least good enough to be entertaining.

Considering they trying to get to the 6th route, I guess it's perhaps showing how this route can be reached. But as an anime only audience, I wouldn't know how to interprete it without knowledge about meanings of those scenes. Now let me guess what is it all about:
Spoiler for speculations:

In any case, 13 eps is really too short and more time for build up is desirable. I wish they have more budgets to make a 2 cour series, but there probably isn't enough commercial value to this adaptation to support such budget.

Actually it could have been far worse than this by such compression ratio, so I wouldn't be too hard on the arrangement. But I wouldn't expect it to be particularly good, just hope that it keeps entertaining and the theme is well presented.

I wish people like you would stop treating these studios as mindless robots who are contracted to work for producers at their whim. Studios maintain certain quality standards, attract the right talent, and have their own culture. A Kyoani or a Madhouse production is often very distinctively their work. Yes, a given production can have its own set of issues depending on producers or the staff in general, but that reflects on the reputation of the studio as a whole.

And as far as reputation goes, 8bit has a pretty shitty one. If they consistently get productions with too little time to do anything, it means something about them specifically. I don't excuse them for garbage like this.
