Wait.. I got it. That character, with the way we've been unsure of his/her sex is Vance. Wright's detective character:
From Wikipedia: "Philo Vance featured in 12 crime novels written by S. S. Van Dine (the pen name of Willard Huntington Wright), published in the 1920s and 1930s." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philo_Vance Also: "According to some contemporary critics, these mannerisms of Vance were affectations, which made him look like a foppish dandy, a poseur. (See below for criticisms.) There is some indication that Van Dine wished the reader to question Vance's sexuality. In The Benson Murder Case, Vance is called a "sissy" by another character, and early in the book, as he is dressing, his friend Markham, asks if he is planning to wear a green carnation, the symbol of homosexuality during the late 19th and early 20th centuries." Hehe... EDIT: Unlikely.. but if it really is someone called 'Vance' and his name with kana ends up being 'Bansu,' I vote we all call him "Pantsu." EDIT2: It worked for Guardrail and look how awesome she was! Last edited by Kylon99; 2010-07-04 at 17:27. |

Well, the eagle crest on it's clothes is limiting the speculation a little bit.
Also, the crest is on a banner hanging in the background... My new theory is that this person is an actor performing in a play describing the Rokkenjima incident.

Oh, that would be interesting, if they're Wright and one of his characters...that still brings up the question of "why is he wearing the head ring and one winged eagle", but that still sounds like it could be possible.
I'm thinking they aren't 1986 characters at least, more likely Meta or 1998 as has been said. Ryuukishi does seem to put some weight on eye colour, all of the 'regular humans' have black eyes, Maria's are purpleish, possibly indicating that she isn't a witch in the regular world but certainly has connections to magic. Then all witches and demons and other such magical furniture have coloured eyes, blue, red and yellow, coincidentally(?) also the colours of the coloured text... Quote:

Which would still be no proof whatsoever that Shkanontrice actually exists, that would be a lovely troll.

Spoiler for clothes:
A crackpot theory yes but their clothes are similar and both women look similar too.

new character are quite strange but i have some possible thoeries.
The boy may related to battler. Red hair is red hair after all. the anchor pendant may make him the opposittle to battler (anchor=boat=I'm going to fall) or maybe is a representation of the younger boat captain. The girls seems more interesting to me. somebody had the theory of she being the illegetimate child or the one kyrie saws in ep2. That's something interesting. On the She is holding a red rose so she might be related to Maria rose. Also in the portrait there are a golden buttlerfly on the table. Maybe the golden brooch Beatrice gave shannon on ep2. I think that this girl is also the doll of the screenshoots. that effect on the the image before can be one like a broken doll. I wonder what would mean the white roses And this is all I can think without reading ep6

hey im usually good at telling the difference between gender in anime but i havent even thought that the portait "girl" could be a "guy" if she indeed is, then Ryukishi is capable of creating ultimate traps now, lol anyway i dont think she is Jessica, Beatrice, Asumu and so on...if i was to choose i would bet on new chars..... or maybe at Rosa and Rudolf, but the guy is clearly "special" so it cant be |

In the case that the male character in the portrait isn't Wright and that he's a 1986 character. I'm going with the theory that he's Kawabata = Maria's father. It would make sense since the characters look young at like 50 so he could look very different in 1998 than in 1986. Plus Kinzo said Maria's father was a nobody and Kawabata would fit that description. And I take the single red hair as hint.
I bet there's a really awesome reason for why he left too. I'm just so excited about these new characters!
