Quite a few of the new technological stuff is only practical to be used by the government or the military, as 'normal' people will find it a little too hard to pay for the gadgets or the electricity bill that comes with it.

Manufacturers of new goods will also want to make a healthy profit from whatever new product is released.

EXCLUSIVE: Drones vulnerable to terrorist hijacking, researchers say:

"Spoofing a GPS receiver on a UAV is just another way of hijacking a plane,”
Humphreys told Fox News.

In other words, with the right equipment, anyone can take control of a GPS-
guided drone and make it do anything they want it to."

Can engineers as a group stand up and say "Well, duh!!!! That's what happens when management overrules the technical people to save a few cents!" ?

Actually.. this is an example of why Murdoch isn't necessarily 'left' or 'right' - his people will do anything to keep you terrified and watching through the commercials. Its just that 'right' is easier for him to manipulate.

Actually it is interesting that he is doing something right....for once.

future wireless internet will have terabytes of bandwidth - http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/26/n...ech-using-OAM/
lol download speed will be on terabytes (or terabits whichever its correct) per second because of this wow

and on a fun note japanese political party is planning to build a gundam
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...ng-real-gundam
but some 2chan comments are funny about it like i remember someone saying this is useless since making a billion dollar gundam will just be destroyed by a thousand to million dollar rocket missile only lol
unless graphene is the real-life gundanium alloy

Actually... this really only has application between major data nodes at very short distances (1km) and is point-to-point only. Mostly useful within a single business/research campus. Its quite unlikely to be applied in the "last mile to the house" networking any time in the foreseeable future. In fact in the US, our "last mile" is still mostly many generations *behind* for much of the country.

FORTY PERCENT of the United States households don't have reasonable access to broadband at all.
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2...korea-estonia/

Where broadband is being deployed recently in the US, it is using land wireless technologies like WiMAX which cannot make use of the OAM technique.

What would be the point of having terabyte of bandwidth if USA/Canada ISP would still cap it at gigabytes?

they are gonna apply it on today's internet infrastructure too well at least implied by this quote on that article link

the concept could also be used to boost speeds in existing fiber-optic cables

i get what you mean since 4G like WiMax and LTE supposedly promise a speed of 100mbps but when it hit the market those greedy ISP's only give around 20-40mbps of speed and they still call that 4G, but even so its still a great speed boost if you predict they will cap it at gigabytes that is still a gigantic internet bandwidth/speed

Scientists Invent Particles That Will Let You Live Without Breathing

The invention, developed by a team at Boston Children's Hospital, will allow medical teams to keep patients alive and well for 15 to 30 minutes despite major respiratory failure. This is enough time for doctors and emergency personnel to act without risking a heart attack or permanent brain injuries in the patient.

The solution has already been successfully tested on animals under critical lung failure. When the doctors injected this liquid into the patient's veins, it restored oxygen in their blood to near-normal levels, granting them those precious additional minutes of life.
Damn, the potential for this application is ENDLESS, beyond its initial life-saving capabilities

Read the fine print, it gives you about 15 minutes of life without the need to breath, do not forget when you breath you do not only absorb oxigen, you exhale carbon dioxide and water, if your body cannot exhale the carbon dioxide hemoglobin cannot reabsorb oxigen.

I still think we should have already invented an artificial lung the size of a fist, but seems we are still years away from one :/

I didn't say it will let you breath indefinitely. But if they can perfect the technology enough and combine it with tech to expel carbon dioxide from the body, you can tear out your lungs and still be alive for a significant period of time.

Oh geez, it flipped over.

Man, it hit the ground pretty damn fast, I hope the astronauts were ok.
It seems like the break firing went off a bit too late, causing the momentum to not get killed in time, causing the pod to flip over.

Good News For Spies and Dictators: ‘FreedomBox’ Is in Danger of an Early Death:

"It’s a developers’ nightmare word: vaporware – a term for hyped new software
that’s never delivered. FreedomBox, an ambitious free-software project designed
to embed privacy and security into netizens’ routers, seems on the verge of
earning that label, risking becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of privacy-
enhancing software.

Which would be a sad fate for a project that aimed at freeing the world from the
shackles of centralized communication services like Facebook, Gmail and AIM.

The FreedomBox is basically a router shot through with free-software. Once
plugged into your home network, it will “protect your security, your privacy and
your anonymity while you use the internet,” said James Vasile, the executive
director of the FreedomBox Foundation, the nonprofit which was formed to
develop the technology using more than $85,000 raised on Kickstarter."

Asteroid Hunters Announce First Private Deep Space Mission:

"Asteroids could be heading for Earth right now, and the world should not have to
live in fear. At least that's the message of a group of scientists and former
astronauts working on the issue. They announced plans today to launch the first
privately funded deep space mission in history, a space telescope that would make
sure the coast is clear for us."

wow thats awesome!!!

and here is my contribution Japan will have plenty of rare metal resources

good news since this will continue to make Japan the technology power house it is today

Slate: In Artificial Intelligence Breakthrough, Google Computers Teach Themselves To Spot Cats on YouTube

The research, thus summarized, is good for a laugh. “Perhaps this is not precisely what Turing had in mind,” wrote The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal. Sure it was, countered The Cato Institute’s Julian Sanchez: Google was training its computers to pass the “Purring Test.”

But what’s most fascinating about the study is that the researchers didn’t actually tell the computers to look for cat faces. The machines started doing that on their own.
The paper’s actual title, you see, has nothing to do with felines, or YouTube for that matter. It’s called “Building High-level Features Using Large Scale Unsupervised Learning,” and what it’s really about is the ability of computer networks to learn what’s meaningful in images—without humans’ help.
See? Cats are so superior, computers teach themselves to spot them-

*is shot*
