Nice episode. Didn't expect Wilhelm to crawl back out of the whale and that flashback kiss scene with his wife was neat, no nosense that you usally see in most anime.
BTW did Subaru die and came back or how did he maange to get the smell that attracts the demons?

So glad the whale is dead. Now, we can on with the good shiet. Also glad Julius is back as well. Subaru needs to get shot out of his cloud and drop to reality.

I was reminded of Devil May Cry 3's Leviathan when Wilhelm got out of that whale. Also when Subaru was about to get eaten by the diving whale.

Lifeless corpse as far as the eye can see

The eye can see
The eye can see
The eye can see
The eye can see
The eye can see

Anytime he tries to tell someone he can return by death hes threatened by whom we presume to be Satella, the Witch. Doesn't actually kill him though, but the direct interference increases his Witch's smell several fold for a little bit. Mabeasts can't resist it.

Hopefully, this is just a knee-jerk reaction by Subaru and hes gonna keep his eye on the prize. Julius for whatever hes worth, is a powerful combat asset and will likely be very useful with the upcoming Witch's Cult fight. Kind of odd he didn't take part in the White Whale hunt. Shouldn't need someone of his stature to block the roads.

--

With so much artillery brought out for the whale I wonder what kind of fight the Betelgeuse fight will be. Besides his invisible hand hes always had his opponents woefully outnumbered so we don't have a gauge for how strong he really is.

Its also going to be interesting to see how Emilia reacts to Subaru showing up with a fighting force and whether or not Subaru intercepts the Witch's Cult, shows mid-siege, or shows up early enough to fortify defenses at the Roswald estate.

I really hope Subaru doesn't go dumbaru on Julius again, you were in the wrong that time man, admit it.
Emilia? Emilia who ?

It's almost kinda surprising that out of all the major characters with at least one major role in an arc in this series, Emilia is one of the least-developed ones outside maybe Roswaal. It makes it harder and harder to see why Subaru is exactly infatuated with her, especially since it feels like he clicks better with just about every other female he generally associates with in the cast. It certainly doesn't help that said women see value(at some point or another; the last couple of loops were the opposite) in Subaru, while it kinda feels like Emilia sees him as a bit of a distraction/nuisance.

Boy, do I ever feel the same way. The narrative has not done much to even hint that Emilia is worth all this pain and torture nor has it given a solid hint as to why Subaru is fixated on her. After 21 episodes, I would appreciate even a little glimpse into the motivations involved.

Anyway, I liked this episode but I thought the amount of fluffing of Subaru's ego got to be a bit excessive. Now Julius arrives so we'll see how much of a lesson Subaru actually learned or if he'll go back to being a dumbass.

Could one ever explain love at first sight? It's something that is very real, but logically speaking, it is hard to explain. Also, Subaru is a teenager with raging hormones, so that makes emotional impulses even more likely.

He met Emilia first. She was beautiful, and he pretty much fell in love at first sight. There really isn't much to reason or explain love at first sight. It just happens, and he is committed to her. If he changes to another person so soon (I don't even think he has been here a month yet), then he will seem whimsical with his feelings or even unfaithful even. That's also why Rem accepted that Emilia is top in his heart.

@SeaDoor and @frubam

Really? Well i just rewatched the first and part of the second arc because the BDs for it are already available and i totally understand why Subaru has a thing for Emilia. You guys just forgot about it because the series focused more on Rem at certain point. Emilia also saved Subaru's life, was the first beacon he found in a strange new alien world, gave him confort and kind words when he was falling appart (especially after he got killed by fucking Rem), she is someone he admires for her altruistic and nice personality, helped him several times even tho she does not understand his weird actions at all and tried to protect Subaru even if that means pushing him away! Hell, she was the one who motivated Subaru to try to help people at first place!
Just because Rem also has done so much for Subaru it does not mean he is obligated to waive his feelings for Emilia. He still can try to be together with Emilia since there is still hope. Don't blame the guy for fighting for the girl he likes just because someone else is available now. If Emilia ends up chosing someone else, then Subaru can move on. I also think he and Rem look cute together anyway and this is coming for someone that is not that big fan of romance. Thing is, saying there is no reason for Subaru's love for Emilia is just wrong.

Great episode!

Shame they altered Subaru x Rem scene, but I think they managed to get similar meaning to LN and WN across even if Subaru's acceptance of Rem's love is more implied here in comparsion. That said Wilhelm and Theresia's scenes were excellent!

Was hoping they would cover Subaru's scenes with Julius to leave more time for the Witch Cult fight, but alas.

Um have we been watching the same show? Outside of Subaru, Rem and Ram to an extend we don't know anything about the other manison reaidents beyond what we have bern shown or gleamed though their interactions with Subaru. This is intentional of course due to pacing and greater ties to the overall plot that Emilia, Betty and Roswall have. Emila and Subaru have had plenty chemistry together through Arcs 1and 2 while Rem's closeness to him is far more recent. Their relationship hit snag in entire because of his own stubborn pride similarity to Wilhelm with Theresia in the past, though in Subaru's case his lack of selfworth was driving force prove himself worthy of standing by her side which of course caused him a lot of problems. I suppose since this being a two cour show it's easy to forget a lot of what happened in the first half.

Emilia has supported Subaru directly through out Arc 1, 2 and indirectly in Arc 3. If not for her helping and saving him (many a time) by putting aside her interests without any obligation he would not be here today or have met Rem (or have the moviation to bother all mess in the manison arc). He's lived by on her good will that he felt he didn't deserve. No other character upon til this point would done same for complete stranger like him with nothing to offer anyone and that is side of her he fell for. Emilia's basically a hero to him in the same way Rem is to Subaru, because she gave him purpose to live for here in this world.

RIP tree. Can someone explain the "LN lore" for how Subaru came up with that plan? It wouldn't occur to me that we can't kill the whale, but we COULD one-shot this tree that is far more thick.

Other than that detail, it was another great episode. I do appreciate how the studio keeps borrowing time from the OP/ED segments, all that time must've added up to almost 2 full episodes by now. They didn't have to do that. They could've just cut some more scenes and called it a day...that's some passion right there.

No the Whale was far more hardy than that tree, and unlike the Mabeast it has no method to further reduce the damage incured on it. Besides army using multiple casting of strongest tier Fire magic (Al Goa) from all their on it so reasonably wasn't going to hold up.

That's some hardcore extrapolation, all I got from Emilia is that she's the first girl and by anime law she has to be the one the MC loves, regardless of development.

I think Re:Zero already proved that it can deviate itself from the usual standards. I would not be surprised if Subaru ends up with Satella instead of Emilia or Rem..LOL. If that happens, you can't blame the guy. Satella looks like Emilia cosplaying Elsa with yandere traits all over the place. That is best girl material right there

There is no extrapolation, everything I have said has happened in the anime and has been displayed in even greater depth in original source and the manga adaptations due having more internal monologues from Subaru.

If you're gonna be reductive about his feelings in that way, then I can easily say Rem's boils down to him being the first guy her age who has actually bothered with getting to know her. Don't you use your presonal preference for one ship to discerdit other relationships. Especially because it relfects badly on every other one as whole.

And if want you get technical Felt is the first girl he met.

Apple, just give it up. People will believe what they want and we don't need another locked board.

Great episode, had to watch it twice because I got very confused at the end. Video on Crunchyroll skipped from Crusche splitting the cloud to the tree falling on the whale lol.

(using your reply to reply to everyone, nothing personal)

What I am wishing to see is the story show why Emilia is worth the trouble that the story has created. I understand somewhat Subaru's fixation so my issue is with the narrative not the character motivation within the narrative.

Another nice episode. I really liked the backstory of Wilhelm weaved into the whole of the White Whale fight and the animation was so fun to watch.

Also is the anime going to be able to cover the last parts of arc 3? if information is right there's a nice little chunk left and only 4 episodes left so it feels like they might not be able to wrap it up at the end of this 3rd arc.
