Hmmmm, I just realized that there's a new division within the staff team (Thread Creator).

Is it something planned for all animes with a sub-forum?

Just asking out of curiosity, btw.

Mistake on setting up the group. Needs to be removed.

Edit: Found the culprit setting, now correctly set. And no, it isn't something we will do with all sub-forums.

Question :

Has anyone noticed how the names of characters are used only once in one anime and the same name never pops up in another anime...

Are the character names copyrighted after an anime is created?

Or is it that Japan has a lot of names!

Hmmmm, actually not true (though yes, Japan has many names to choose from). Example that pops immediately up
1) Motoko - used in Love Hina and GhostintheShell
2) Mio - used in K-On! and Ichigo Masimaro
3) Kaede - used in Shuffle! and in ElfenLied.

I'm sure we could bury the list in other examples. Names are chosen by whomever does the source material (manga - author; eroge - software team; light novel - author) and they undoubtedly use a variety of methods so as not to cause too much confusion. As far as copyright goes.... the Japanese seem to be more practical on the issue. As long as it is clarified which Mio or Motoko is being adverted its no big deal.

edit: you were ambiguous as to whether you meant family names or given so I assumed given names.

I think a large part of it is the Japanese's use of the Family name in common language saving the given name for only the closest of friends. I'm sure if you looked at all the given names you'd find a lot more overlap.

I haven't tested this, but I don't believe this. Mosquitoes aren't exactly attracted to carbon dioxide as if by some magnetic force, otherwise you'd see swarms of mosquitoes chasing after cars. I'm fairly certain that mosquitoes are also heat-sensitive, which makes the dry ice something that the mosquitoes would avoid.

On mozzies, it's probably better to build up your resistance to them.

??? You mean let them bite you until you become resistant to it?

This is true, there is a product that we had at my house called the mosquito magnet and all it does is turn propane into CO2 and catch mosquitoes in a trap inside. It works incredibly well. The dry ice would also work, they wouldn't necessarily land on the dry ice but they would certainly fly around in the CO2 above it.

The reasons why mosquitoes don't chase after cars is because cars are a lot faster than mosquitoes.

And how about Haruhi Suzumiya from Melancholy and Haruka Suzumiya from Kimi ga Nozomu Eien? And that's only one example...

I'm still very doubtful of this. Burning propane generates heat, and if the burning can be kept to around the temperature that the human body (or other animal) emits, then a mosquito might really be fooled into thinking that there's an animal there.

Cars are faster than mosquitoes, but leave a car running (without going anywhere, just let it sit) and see if groups of mosquitoes swarm around the tailpipe. I've never seen such a thing.

And that makes sense. Nature rarely makes things too one-sided. If mosquitoes were drawn to carbon dioxide and that's it, no other factors came into play, then you'd see loads of mosquitoes flying into fires, volcanoes, and other sources of carbon dioxide. And in cities, where there are a lot of cars and industrial processes releasing carbon dioxide, people would be virtually immune because their own carbon dioxide output would be incredibly tiny compared to those from other processes. Yet people still occasionally get mosquito bites in cities.

I'd be nice to have access to dry ice... Also, I was poking fun at commercials...

Thanks.

I meant the first name btw and not the surname/family name.

Occasionally? I'd covered in mosquito bites every night without exception if I didn't have my trusty anti-musquito on 24x7 where I live

#2 is probably Sarah Conner Chronicles (a tv show), and #10 is probably Angel (another tv show, spinoff of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the WB. Both're cancelled now, FYI
