I haven't seen everything, but in what I have, he never smiles. He's always grumpy, and frowning, or smiling in a sort of "heh, I'm smart" way.
Has anyone noticed a moment where he actually looked calm, relieved, happy even?

I think the only time I remember, is when he was yelling at Ino and Chouji to get in the bushes to hide, and he sort of smiled when Ino came back into her body,
and said "good, you're back!".. and then chouji started being scared and he got mad again. ^^;; hehe, I liked that episode.

He's happy, just not in the standard way. He's mostly just calm.

I think it's too much effort for him to smile. He gives a goofy grin when the teacher plunks him in the head with the eraser when he falls asleep in class.

When Asuma saves his ass he's pretty relieved, too.

He smiles a good few times, off the top of my head, emm when Naruto beats Kiba and when his main tourny match is over and he's talking to Naruto.

Shikamaru has an IQ of 200.. Not only that, but he also is one to plan for future events. Shikamaru knows that people who smile to much will end up with really bad wrinkles when they get older. So he has taken that into consideration and therefore only gives half ass smiles to save his face for the future. Way to go shikamaru!

Shikamaru's too cool to smile... also, he knows as soon as he let's his emotions show, something bad's gonna happen. Besides, his non-smiling attitude has gotten him into fights with nothing but hot chicks.... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Shika Smiles, He doesnt express himself with Movements most of the time.. If its Funny, he'll most likely jus stare :P, but... if hes happy to say a Teamate happy,
or Complete task.. he would prob smile :O , right?

And later in the manga when Shika said to Chouji: "You're the best!".

He does smile, but we mostly see him in battles or in hospitals or restaurants. He wouldn't really smile in a battle would he? or when choujis eating 600 pounds of ham in his face.

Spoiler: Shikamaru has a genuine smile when he's talking to Choji about Ino after Ino finished lecturing Choji about over eating. He also smiles as a child when he approaches Choji and tells him that the other kids were annoying (or something like that) and he'd rather be Choji's friend.
