If by filler you mean "stuff that happens in the manga between big arcs" then I guess you'll be disappointed.

And yet FT is one of the manga/anime that handles such parts the best...there was little space between each arc: from Eizenwald->Garuna island->Phantom Lord->Tower of paradise, there was an interval of only 1-2 eps or so.

I agree, Fairy Tail is one of a rare bread of shounen where I actually enjoy the small fillers they add and I hope that trend continues cause I wouldn't mind watching more FT for a long time...

Episode 40 was the best episode of the series so far. Some great action, and a number of really dramatic moving moments. Natsu eating the magic filled crystal was awesome, So yeah the opening is a bit spoilery in regards to outcome of this storyline, though I'm still curious as to "The how"

I love episode 40!! so intense and emotional! I particularly like the scenes with Shimon dying and Erza being swallowed into the lacryma with Natsu beating against it. oh, the flashback of Erza's eye also adds an extra touch to Erza's "end", generating additional emotional points.

Now onto the next arc!

Episode 40
I was seriously surprised when Simon had died, I thought that no one actually major would die in the series, looks like I was wrong. Poor guy though
Natsu sure can be scary when he wants it and I really liked his moments with Erza. Wouldn't be surprised if someone started to ship them after that. Though it would work for me: Erza/Natsu, Lucy/Loke and Gray/Juvia

Spoiler for 41:

What happened on episode 41?.

They ruined one of the most awesome parts of the tower of paradise arc.

Spoiler for ep 41:

That was the best part of all the arc.

About Juvia:

Spoiler for ep 41 juvia:

Ok, i don't know if this goes in the manga topic or in the anime topic, technically it fits in both, however its a spoiler about a missing part in the anime adaptation, im putting it in spoiler, this is a warning, so fans that didn't read the manga won't read:

Spoiler for plot changes in the anime adaptation:

^Personally it seems like the studio want to end the adaptation after this upcoming arc, and that's why quite a few important parts in the manga were skipped during this episode. I mean they rushed 5 chapters into one episode. That's not a good sign.

Is fairy tail popular in japan?.

If not, then it makes sense that they end the story in this arc. Doing many changes.

They've been hinting for a while actually that they'd be ending after the next arc. They've left in all the foreshadowing up to this point, even adding some more in some cases, but subtly removed anything that mentioned anything after this arc. It seems they don't want many loose ends and prefer to keep the anime as self-contained as possible. As much as it disappoints me, that really does seem like a good idea.

Or, more optimistically, they were still negotiating for more air time or waiting to see how popular it was when they were planning the script. Thus, it might still go on but they had to play it safe earlier, which would still be showing up now.
