Although I feel it was far too complicated for 2.5 3.5 weeks of guessing >.<, It will be interesting to see how close our guesses are.

He wasn't gassed to death.

The jail cell just has a bed, a sink and a toilet. There's nothing hidden inside of the jail cell.

The person was a convict with a life sentence. He was sentenced to death in a week and he died at the end of the week.
