It's because, among other things, it has the potential of messing up conversation threads and quotes with broken references and other confusion. Even if in this case no broken references would result (which would require a manual check), the rule is just that if the person has posts, the name is used forever even if that person leaves. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sorry, but we require all forum names to be in latin characters (i.e. things that English-speakers can easily type on English keyboards).

Yeah that's what I thought, but now there's a member whose username is a Japanese phrase in all kana and kanji. I thought that the rules may have changed and I missed the memo or something.

Well then, if it absolutely must be Latin characters, then please change my name to Kudryavka? Thank you! (unless Russian is allowed? Then I'll ask it in Russian, but I'm pretty sure no Russian letters either right??)

There are however, several members with Japanese names as you will see if you go to Members page. Shouldn't you make it so that when creating an account, only latin characters are accepted in names? Because as it is, you can go '' around the rule '' if you create a new account and register with a new name that would not otherwise be allowed.

I'm pretty sure that we already do have such a filter in place now, and that these usernames are old legacy accounts from back in the early days. But I'll do some testing to confirm that's the case.

(And incidentally, if we do catch someone creating a duplicate account for whatever reason, it's a bannable offence, so I wouldn't really recommend people try that approach anyway.)

Just for reference if you use the "Remember Me" option then you will auto-login into the account with the new name since that uses your user ID which won't change with the name change.
