As for IS, I personally believe 学戦都市アスタリスク (Gakusen Toshi Asterisk) is a almost a mirror copy of IS. Much more than the aforementioned series.

Well yeah, Gakusen Toshi Asterisk copy's IS to the point where it almost seems like a fanfic of IS. Hell even the art looks similar (without factoring in the change in IS vol 8). It's sorta hard to get any closer then that.

For 魔技科の剣士と召唤魔王 I worded it badly. Instead of background I should use the word synopsis. The background is admittedly quite different.

Let me make a comparison.

In the near future, a Japanese scientist engineers a powered exoskeleton called "Infinite Stratos" (IS). Possessing technology and combat capabilities far more advanced than any other weapon system, the IS threatens to destabilize the world. Faced with such an overpowering weapon, the nations of the world enact the "Alaska Treaty", which states that IS will never be used for military combat and that existing IS technology must be equally distributed to all nations, to prevent any one nation from dominating the others. The introduction of the IS does, however, have a major effect on society. As IS can only be operated by women, there is a shift in the power balance between men and women, where women now dominate society over men.

Ten years after IS was initially introduced, the world has entered a new age of peace. The peace is shattered, however, by Ichika Orimura, a 15-year-old Japanese boy able to operate an IS. Realizing the potential, the Japanese government forces the bewildered young man to attend the prestigious Infinite Stratos Academy, an international academy where IS pilots from all over the world are trained. Thus, he starts a busy high school life surrounded by nothing but girls who can use IS.

To make a brief summary of the setting basically 15 years ago the world discovered magic as well as mythical beings (basically beings from various legends) in another dimension. Humankind learned to summon these dangerous mythical beings and use their power to great effect. 7 country's formed contracts with these "gods" and gained their alligence as a result. Gods will chose their summoners on their 14th birthday and give them a stigma. Schools have been set up to train summoners and magical swordsman (basically bodyguards that give the summoners time to cast their spell) as a result.

15 years latter after the finding of magic Kazuki Hayashizaki is chosen as a summoner and given a stigma to indicate that. This is surprising since males aren't chosen as summoners due to their low amount of mana compared to females. As the first male to be a summoner Kazuki is under a lot of scrutiny by almost everyone.

To complicate matters his sister (who's a magical swordsman) is against him going into summoner school to train there as a summoner. Because summoners and magical swordsman have a cat mouse thing going on where summoners look down on magical swordsman as inferior so his sister naturally is against him going there. She'll stop him even if it means going to war (bro complex is strong in this one).

Kazuki however is determined to thrive in summoner school and have already determined to give it his all. Even if he's the lowest ranked student (ranked E) and his fellow students intend to demean him he'll prove himself as the strongest summoner.

If you just read 魔技科の剣士と召唤魔王 synopsis you'll think, oh hey a IS with a twist to it. You won't think Campione!, Strike the Blood, or Successor to the Sword Saint because without reading it you won't know about most of it's in story details.

This doesn't mean that I think it's like IS once you get into it. Take note that in the previous post I did acknowledge that once you start reading it, it'll sound closer to the one's you mentioned.

Anyways I realize that our discussion doesn't really belong in this thread. If you want to continue feel free to VM me or something.

To get this thread back on track I have another recommendation: Tsukumodo Antique Shop for those that enjoy more dark stories.

It's complete and two volumes are already available at Baka Tsuki (with a third volume incoming). The chinese translations has all seven volumes.

Spoiler for review:

Basically it's a episodic book involving supernatural relics. By episodic book I mean each chapter tells a story about how the two protagonists (three if you count the owner) deals with these relics.

The chapters can range from being fairly lighthearted (this is pretty rare actually) to fairly grim (very common). Oh, by fairly grim I mean really, really grim. The author enjoys pulling downer endings or bittersweet endings for a lot of the characters that show up in each episode (chapter). With that said the author does his best to keep the endings for the character of the individual chapters unique in their own way and you'll sometimes be surprised at how well the endings are foreshadowed or how ironic some of them are. It keeps you thinking which is what some people enjoy in a book.

As for the characters the two mains are interesting in their own way. The male character, Tokiya, seems boring at first glance but quickly turns out to be badass and quick witted. It's always fun to see how he will outwit the user of a relic. His snarks are also fun to read. I would compare him to Kyon (granted that comparison might not be accurate given I haven't touched tMoSH in a long, long time).

The female, Saki, is a Rei clone (expressionless on the outside but thinking a lot on the inside) and while that might be overly done it's done decently. Her romantic developments with Tokiya are well done and is one of the best one's I read about in LN. She's also special and one of the main ongoing plots of the book is about said specialness.

The other recurring character is the owner of the store, Towako. She's a typical mentor type character that enjoys teasing Tokiya. Cliched but well done. Nothing to dislike.

The non recurring characters are usually well done. Most of them have some issue or another which causes them to use a relic and the main focus of each chapter is their PoV and how their issue+relic affects the main characters and themselves.

All in all a great read for those that enjoy "serious" type books.

Oh! Thanks for that! I looked it up online and realized it was a series I passed over because no one was translating. I loved it at first glance, but since no one was translating I forgot about it. It looks like the first chapter was scanlated two days ago.

The Key of Solomon aka Lemegeton.

It takes the form of a playful loli that grows up as Kazuki gets more girls which gives Lemegeton more power. According to it, it'll gain special powers as the girls affection for Kazuki continues to increase so we can probably expect more from it as Kazuki's harem gets larger.

Also does anyone have a good slice of life comedy novel that's not in Baka Tsuki? Preferably translated in Chinese

Gakuen has the same older sister background, sword background, female dominant school (though males exist), mad researchers, quasi super techs, etc. To me, it's about as close as a carbon copy to IS as you'll find without committing plagiarism.

The higher ups greatly appreciate it because it enhances Japan's international influence, but at the same time they do not know why the 72 demons chose this country or for what purpose they're helping Japan.

For Gakuen, the ratio is balanced, but if you look at who is ranked at the top, they're pretty much ALL females.

All the males are in the Sword Faction, which is basically perceived as meatbags to hold off enemies while the mages chant their spells. The only male in the Magic Faction is the MC and to the surprise of everyone including himself, he was placed in the Magic Faction.

That's not to say sword fighters are completely helpless, but it's safe to say that with the exception of maybe the top 3 sword users (MC, Sword Faction President or the MC's step-sister, and the Vice President), everyone else is completely useless against magic. Even for the top 3, they have to rely on speed and read the flow of magic (something only the top 3 can do) in order to eliminate their opponent before they can finish their chant. It's given that if a mage can finish his or her chant, it's game over for the sword user.

Now, after reading this, does anyone still feel this is remotely similar to IS? And before anyone says "older sister", realize that the older step sister here is a dual blade wielding loli.

Oh and depending on how the female>male thing is played out it might be initially similar to IS, I remember some girls i.e. Cecilia having the whole "you male, you weak" thing along with some other random scene when Ichika went shopping, other than that it' seems pretty different

Actually, I was strictly talking about Asterisk. The majority of the top 12 are female because of fanservice and the will of the author. It's not like females are superior to males or anything so it's not the same as IS in that regard.

Gonna clarify that the whole demon/god thing is semantics and being a god or demon doesn't affect rather you're for or against humanity. As far as humanity is concerned gods and demons both fall under the classification of "mythical beings" and their only called god/demon based on their legend. It's not like demons and gods operate on different rules or anything.

The only difference is that the only god shown thus far chose to side against humanity while the demons shown thus far are shown to side with humanity.

Given that there are 6 other country's have formed contracts with different myths I'm fairly confident that we'll see a "god" mythical being that sided with humanity.

And while it's true that only swordsman that can read magic or swordman that specifically prepare against it can fight summoner mages in duels it's only duels. It's pointed out by the sister fairly early while she was bitchslapping around the two magic faction students that real battles aren't as nice as duels. Duels have a set distance (100 meter or something like that) allowing mages to cast a least one spell off before the swordsman can get close while a actual battle can happen at any distance hence why summoners need protection.

If someone does get close they can disturb the summoner concentration by hitting them preventing them from summoning and forcing them to activate their shield on reflex draining their magic. Hit them enough times and their magic is all gone leaving only a fragile body. This pretty much means that it's a loss for the summoner if someone with better physical ability gets within a couple feet of the summoner because they'll keep pounding the summoner until all magic is lost. Their are exceptions such as the captain and VC of the magic faction that can concentrate even while being hit or have a strategy/technique that gets around their close range weakness but most can't do that.

Speaking of shield, there's another similarity with IS. Both their main method of battling involves draining the energy from a shield that activates on reflex. Oh, and both main characters have a technique that gets past said shield (Kazuki's method is a lot different then Ichika's though). Pretty minor really but I'm absolutely sure that the author did take some ideas from IS.

With that said I'd laugh if someone finds personality similarities between Chifuyu and Kanae. The two are practically polar opposites in almost every way. The only similarity is that both are high on the pecking order in terms of strength (Chifuyu much more then Kanae) and both are badass in their own right.

Yep Kanae is the younger sister. Although she's technically older then Kazuki, due to the fact that Kazuki's age is unknown to him during his time at the orphanage it was assumed that he's 15 when he was adopted. Which was proven wrong on his 15th (aka 14th) birthday when he got the mark. At that point Kanae already got used to being his younger sister so she still acts like she's younger.

And naw it doesn't focus on gender discrimination at all similar to Blade Dance (though honestly IS didn't focus on it especially given how it was played out as a big deal in it's synopsis). The girls never really hold Kazuki's gender against him. Instead the book focuses on the divide between sword faction and magic.

I'm wondering if I should make the thread for this at this point given how much this thread's being derailed over this topic

Also, I think you forgot that gender discrimination was demonstrated in IS on multiple occasions. Once, when Ichika was shopping for simwsuits with charl, he got called over by the female manager of the store to help sort the merchandise. Him, a complete stranger.

There is one I was looking at--It is in Chinese but its translated to be Princess and SKY KINGDOM . (公主+天国(H+P 公主天国) Not sure what the Japanese translation is.

It has 5 LN and 10 chapter worth of manga.

About a guy who has a dominating elder sister who don't want his younger brother end up being a playboy like Dad (AKA playboy, so sort of a Onee version of Sukiza from Campione). He is living in Japan, high school boy.

He is also a good Kendoist. The two siblings own a Dojo and he is master of a sword art.

Then he got teleported/summoned into the classic "magic kingdom" world (Like Zero no Tsukima)

The Kingdom is protected by a magic barrier, the barrier is setup by a Queen who is the ruler of the land. But the barrier is slowly weakening because the Queen is ill, and someone must take over the barrier shield duty, because an ARMY OF DARKNESS is trying to break in.

In order for someone to do so, one of the Queens' 5 daughters must ascend the throne and become the new queen...but in order to do so, she must be preggo by a "King" via a ritual.

So our boy is now stuck with (In order of age)
-Red head serious Magic Knight girl (AKA deliver most violence on MC)
-Blonde one (Leather)
-Blonde two (lace)
-Glasses-low self-estain low magic girl.
-Loli "I don't need panties"

And other than the redhead, the other 4 are willing and sharing

@blackwhite67, Well the raws online have the title as Magika No Kenshi To Bashireusu but when I searched the last part of the name ヴァシレウス it led to some random navy ship ヴァシレウス･ゲオルギオス(Vasilevs Georgios) & the english wiki only has Vasilefs Georgios so it's pretty confusing, also none of this is confirmed but I just wanted to throw it in there. edit: vasilefs seems to also be Basileus so yeah, four different titles lol

C^3 is actually a pretty nice work. It actually grows on you instead of being cliche and forced.

As for HnA and IS.....I am sure by now their flaws are legendary...

If you're looking for a harem genre LN Gekka no Utahime to Magi no Ou, is a lot better then both HnA and IS.

HnA isn't that bad, it just annoy me when Kinji refused to go HSS mode when needed most.
